(CNS): The date for the national referendum on the government’s proposed cruise port project is now up in the air, but if it takes place in April, which is a distinct possibility, the window of opportunity for new voters to take part will close on Thursday this week. Eligible Caymanians have only until 2 January to register and make the April electoral roll.

Anyone who is qualified and interested in registering should visit the Elections Office website here. They can also call 949-8047 or visit the office, which is now at the Bay Town Office Suites at 68 West Bay Road, opposite The Wharf.

This island is so backwards. Hear me out, electronic files. Why I have to submit 40 marriage certificates or birth certificates to the same government is crazy. Why I get a printed copy of a police report is crazy. Why the cut off to register to vote takes so long is crazy. Add more idiotic requirements below.

Getting added to the list and Gazetted takes months, but then removals seem less involved and documented, if they happen at all. There are names of former residents still on the register, that left the jurisdiction decades ago. Don’t those people loose the right to be Caymanian after several years of non-residency? Who checks that?

Anyone can report issues they observe on the electoral roll. That means you can. Then the Elections Office officials will check the situation and deal with it properly.

The checking should be automatic and should be considered by immigration on an ongoing basis.

Some checks are, e.g. persons dying. But not all can be. So report what you see and think is incorrect, e.g. let country, registered in wrong area, etc. Get it checked by the authorities.

I keep a list of all my neighbors on and around my street and cross reference that to the list of electors. More than once people have been removed both dead and alive.

I observe that persons are being registered without proper checks being undertaken with immigration to ensure they are and remain Caymanian.

Requiring people to be registered 3 months before an election appears undemocratic and indefensible in a modern society with access to technology. Why does it take more than a week to have eligibility to vote confirmed?

I guess that it is simply no one has thought to change the law since we stopped recording everything in large register books.
Many of the time frames for such required actions remain in this state.
