(CNS): Lelieth Monique Welcome (36), a small restaurant owner from George Town and a mother of eight children, was given a 19-month prison sentence on Wednesday in connection with an assault on another woman at her restaurant with a kitchen implement, causing her a severe head injury. Welcome attacked the younger woman after her husband sat on the victim’s knee.

After hearing submissions last week relating to the charge of wounding, Justice Marlene Carter said there were few mitigating circumstances in the case other than Welcome’s “genuine remorse”, as she had apologised to the victim, who accepted the apology, and the fact that it was not a premeditated attack.

Welcome has been diagnosed as having a number of mental health problems. A social enquiry report also revealed that she was brought up in an exceptionally violent environment, suffering severe abuse at the hands of her mother and others. Among other terrible and terrifying assaults, being beaten with barbed wire when she was a child.

As she arrived at her decision, the judge noted the need to balance justice for the victim, who has been badly scarred emotionally and physically, with mercy.

“But I have before me an abused child who grew up to be a violent woman,” Justice Carter said.

Welcome has some five previous convictions for violence and was serving the last five weeks of a suspended sentence for an ABH conviction when she was charged for this attack, which happened in July.

The judge arrived at a sentence of two and a half years but she reduced that by a third because of Welcome’s early admissions and her unambiguous acceptance that she was responsible for the attack and had to suffer the consequences. However, the judge added one month on to the sentence for the breach of her previous sentence conditions, arriving at a 19-month term.

Trump has a variety of very obvious mental illnesses. Are you saying that people with a mental illness do not deserve love too?

Don’t down Caymanian women, I am married to one and she is excellent in every way, and in the pass I have always dated my native women. You must choose the right ones and walk with your check list let me explain… Number 1- they must have their own vehicle, must have a job, must have credit or a bill phone, must can cook, and they also need to know what love means and last but not least the Caymanian woman must be educated and in a CAREER not a JOB. If they don’t have these qualities better be prepared to Welcome a Lelieth in your life.

@ 3:29pm…First off you said the Caymanian woman must have a job and then you circle back and say she must be educated and in a Career not a job? A damn job is a job, at least she is working!

You also said “you must choose the right ones”? There is no “right person” as none of us are perfect and we all have our faults. Most Caymanian men are no “Gem” either but yet they are given a chance to prove themselves and if they mess up then move on. We were all born with common sense but sometimes we don’t always make the right decisions and it takes a few tries to get it right eventually. It’s called LIFE!

I’ll make the same comment I did the last time this story was reported on – where is the early intervention in Cayman? It’s certainly no shock when someone raised in violence by poor parents becomes a violent person and a poor parent themselves. Why do we just accept this? Some help at an early age with mental health problems, anger management, free birth control (yes, maybe even access to abortion) and parenting support could have prevented this sorry situation and maybe even broken the cycle. This isn’t to suggest that a bad upbringing excuses her actions – it doesn’t – but what sort of chance did she have in a place that doesn’t want to talk about child abuse and teen sexuality? Hopefully her children can be afforded more support than she was. Otherwise, expect more of the same.

Why does it take five felony convictions before you get even a minimal jail term? The judges need to get serious about crime. Stop following the failed UK practices.

Lelieth, we all know what led to this. Those without sin cast the first stone. Keep your head up and use your time to the best.

You mean use your time at best to rehabilitate and try to be a mother instead of a nuisance to society and also in bed with a shitty man?

We know what lead to it? Nothing leads to slashing someone in the head with a giant knife because you are angry. It’s a choice she made. It’s all her doing. Period. Nobody made her do it.

I feel for her that she had a rough upbringing, but she is doing the same to her children by repeatedly breaking the law and by the sounds of it, having her kids put in group homes.

Would she not want better for them?

She is not a mother of 8 children.

She may have given birth to 8 children, but she is no mother. Those kids are being raised in foster homes and group homes and have been for years. The man she fighting over does not take care of those children either.

They out there doing all this foolishness instead of trying to get their children back. KMT.

Making a child does not make you a parent.

I really hope that she get some kind of help while she in jail so she can start being a mother to those children and stay out of jail for them.

It is sad that you believe that only Caymanian women stay in abusive relationships. Abuse is global and does not recognize nationality, gender, race or colour.

      True

Why do people think that having had an abusive childhood makes it ok to harm someone else. It appears to be the common excuse to get a reduced sentence. Five previous convictions!
