(CNS): The Cayman Islands Elections Office is conducting a final push to verify Cruise Port Referendum signatures, as only 145 more are needed to meet the target of 25% of registered voters to trigger the national poll on government’s cruise port plans. There are still 645 signatures that have been submitted but not yet verified, so the success of the petition seems assured, but to get there elections staff are revisiting homes to contact individuals who were not reached during earlier stages of verification.

People who signed the petition but have not yet verified their signature can also contact the Elections Office to arrange a new time and place to verify their signature.

Signators who have moved from their registered address should contact the Elections Office as soon as possible.

Commenting on the final stages of the verification process, Elections Supervisor Wesley Howell said, “The remaining few individuals are certainly the most difficult to reach. This is why we are increasing our efforts to contact those who have not yet verified their signature. I strongly encourage petitioners who have not verified their signatures to contact our offices. With the support of the remaining petitioners, we anticipate being to wrap up verification in the coming days.”

If you don’t want the port, go out and vote in the referendum! Can you not see that is the best way to oppose it!

All of the ‘old-timers’ that WILL go out and vote will be too bamboozled by and naïve about their gowernment. And that is the real shame.
I do NOT want the port. I have nothing to do with the tenders. I am an avid diver and Eden Rock is one of the best shore dives on this island. You CANNOT replace this site but that container ship did it’s best to destroy it. All for naught as these sites will never recover from the build.
The best we can do is for the pro-environment people to educate their elderly family members about the destruction of our golden egg and fingers crossed, those that feel strongly enough will come out to vote.
I wish it would hurry because I am already sick of that pathetic jingle they’re playing “Support our tourism” BS. Voting against the port is also supporting our tourism product. Just not the jewelry stores.

I actually disagree, some of the older Caymanians in my experience despite the right wing brainwashing, bible beating and Fox news talking points actually favour preserving the natural environment (specifically in Cayman)

They tend to dismiss climate and environmental issues on the global level but here at home they seem to understand the 102 sq miles is all we have and needs to be protected and kept livable and attractive

Personally I do Not want the port ! That being said , it is going to happen . Surely the Pro port lawyers are waiting with baited breath for the beginning of many battles that will ensue . As much as it hurts to say , you cannot beat city hall in this particular case . They will listen to arguments but eventually some obscure law from the past will bury this petition , or as they do in most countries , they wont care what the people say . Sad but true .

Jamaica openly admitted that they are banking on Cayman building this CBF to up-tick their cruise tourism product. A few months ago the prim minister was here talk about re-establishing trades between the islands. As Alden is in the Lodge, I am sure his orders are coming from Jamaican Lodge brothers. I wonder, how deep this web really entangled?

This is a false hope for the pro tender lobbyists. A year worth of trying to get 25% of signatures doesn’t bode well for getting double that to show up on one day to vote.

You meant pro-democratic lobbyists right? As opposed to being complacent with a clearly emerging dictatorship government.

Your tired assertion that because one does not support the CBF is because one is ‘pro tender’ does not hold water, and it shows your disingenuity. There are multiple reasons why I, for instance, do not support the CBF and it has absolutely nothing to do with any loyalty to and/or for the ‘pro tender lobby’. This false rhetoric has been used as part of the ‘pro port’ propaganda machine from the beginning of this debacle and said rhetoric is as full of horse puckey now as it was then.

    • Petition has more signatures than the PPM has votes says:

Except they aren’t going to have to convince anyone to show up, Cayman regularly has upwards of 70% voter participation, and all signs point to the greater public being against the project

Even if your logic is 25% of the electorate isn’t very many signatures keep in mind, The PPM got a total of 4,909 votes across 15 candidates in 2017, This petition already has MORE than that many signatures

This petition has more backers than the PPM had votes, which kinda makes it hard for people like you to discount the petition
Wish the media would point stuff like this out

I’d imagine those weekly cabinet meetings haven’t exactly been pleasant atmospheres since the petition is this close to the mark

I’d imagine when the Supervisor of electors drops that notice off to the Cabinet Secretary the tension in the air will be palpable enough to grab

Someone check if Alden has started pulling out his greased hairs yet, don’t want the poor guy hurting himself when his house of cards starts crumbling in on itself
What I wouldn’t give to catch one of those ministers or government MLAs on a radio show so I could call out their BS when that petition is verified

The only people who will benefit from the port project are the waterfront merchants and the families connected to those businesses
Who just so happen to be the same people who fund the political parties

The reason why people are opposed to this project is the long and well known track record of project failures from the PPM and the CDP
The people have no confidence in this government and no trust in a group of former enemies who banded together out of desperation and political convenience to hold onto power like the autocrats they are

    • Brexit ≠ Cruise Port Petition says:

      Nothing like Brexit

Brexit was pushed by politicians outside of the government desperate for power trying to shake up the status quo like Farage and Johnson ( Johnson assumed when leave won that he would be made PM right up until other MPs turned on him) , British politicians pushed for Brexit because it is easier (and more politically convenient) to blame the EU than admit Westminster and Whitehall need serious reform
For a clear example you only have to look at lie pushed by Johnson during his run for PM in June where he claimed that the EU was responsible for ridiculous food safety standards affecting British businesses when it was actually a rule from Westminster
      https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-49030873

On the other hand The Cruse Port is being pushed by the Gov onto the people because the politicians who make up the gov are trying to ensure their donors (waterfront merchants with familial connections and interests in their parties) can have their failing business models propped up
Every piece of evidence points to the general populous being against this Cruise port, yet the government has still refused to end their bid to force this project through.
The petition was a last resort by the people of the Cayman islands to end the overstepping of a government with no respect for the democratic will of the people. While persons associated with the petition also happen to be people involved in local politics, this effort would not have been possible without widespread local support ( even with a year long media blitz from the government with tens of thousands of dollars spent pushing people to not sign they managed to get it done)

At the end of the day Brexit was a desperate bid by political outsiders hungry for power
This petition is a movement that displays the will of the people against the government

The only comparable portion is the fact that they are both being dealt with using public votes

To all of our elected Government, you didn’t think we were going to make it happen did you!?! I signed and was verified weeks ago and I’m so proud to share in a part of this historic event. I think Cayman might benefit from a port but I want all of the details and facts in order to support the move.

If our Government had done that simple thing, which is in our laws by the way, we would not need to be here. I hope this momentum continues and that we begin to show the older Caymanians that sitting idly by only allows you to sit idly by.

I hope we need to continue to hold these people to account for their actions and complete lack of foresight and a list of other things (coomon sense) that are making them fail the people of these Islands.

    Good going my people!!!

Thank you CPR for the commitment and willingness to take the lead in encouraging people to use their voices and power to take back control from a government that is disconnected and ignore the concerns of the voters. They will pay for their arrogance at the polls.
