Crash on Shamrock Rd, 6 August 2019

(CNS): Seven people were taken to hospital Tuesday after two cars crashed on Shamrock Road close to Bueno Vista. Police said both sides of the road had to be temporarily closed to allow the clean-up of debris from the two vehicles, which were both damaged extensively. The collision happened around 1:50pm. Police, the EMS and fire officers were dispatched to the scene and the injured were taken to hospital.

No details were given about how the crash happened. In a release just after 4pm, police said the road had been cleared.

At a recent public meeting about the planned upgrades in the area government officials highlighted the safety issues on this particular stretch of road.

Once the East-West Arterial extension has been completed, the National Roads Authority is hoping to redevelop this stretch of road to include medians and turning areas, and eliminating the centre land. Because of the number of collisions on the road, the NRA also wants to reduce the speed limit.

Not really pertaining to this but can someone explain to me why on earth people just stop in the middle of the road here? Like stop and wait for people they are picking up, stop and get out of the car to run an errand, or just stop! I see this daily and always close by there is a place to safely pull off the road. I don’t get it. These lazy blowhards think we should go around them into oncoming traffic and that’s normal! I have been here over 10 years and I will never get used to it. Is there not a traffic law against it?

And yet I still don’t see the police pulling people over for any traffic violation. Actually, come to think of it, I rarely see the police!

Would have been extremely helpful if the RCIPS placed Officers to direct traffic within the diversions; Especially for crossing the Bypass and trying to make a right at the end of the Bypass towards Countryside.

8.51 pm: You missed the murderous idiots who cross the double yellow lines travelling east overtaking around the corner into the path of oncoming traffic. I see this a few times every month.

I just got overtaken by a stupid woman in a black CRV. I was indicating right to enter a property, she overtook over the yellow line, whilst indicators were on. I’d be mad at her but then I felt better, safe in the knowledge that I’m definitely not the stupidest person here.

This road is probably the biggest hotspot for crap driving. I’m not going to speculate on the story, but this stretch has it all. Idiots speeding next to where vehicles pull out of side streets. Slow cars in fast lane, fast cars undertaking in slow lane. Dump trucks in fast lane. Vehicles in fast lane and thus driving unnecessarily close to oncoming vehicles. 345 bike life idiots showing their organ donar credentials. Buses pulling over at unsuitable points. Tailgaters. Tailgaters tailgating tailgaters. Jake braking trucks.

    What a joy.

Thank you! That pretty much sums it up. I live nearby, and live in fear of the dangerous driving along this stretch of road. We’ve approached the NRA because its only going to get worse with the repaving of Shamrock Road. There is no reason why the speed limit can not be reduced NOW, and then enforced. Please, let’s not have to wait for ETH extension, or another fatality…..sadly, I know which will come sooner.

I don’t think the limit needs to be reduced from 40mph … what needs to happen is that limit needs to be enforced. It is death defying on that road – the only time I feel safe is when there’s bumper to bumper traffic – otherwise it is a raceway with a bunch of crap drivers trying to outdo each other.
