Security guard run down by suspect at marina

(CNS): A security guard is in critical condition after a run-in with trespassers at a George Town restaurant and yacht marina Sunday night. Police said they received a report around 8:45pm about an altercation at a business at the end of North Sound Road. A security guard had come upon four young men using the pool at the George Town Yacht Club, which was closed to the public at the time. The guard spoke to the young people, who left but they returned a little later with two more friends.

The six young men then began throwing rocks at the security officer and other staff at both the restaurant and nearby marina, hitting several people and injuring at least one person. But at some point one of the young men managed to get into a vehicle parked outside near the marina area and proceeded to drive towards and hit the security guard, seriously injuring him.

The suspect then got out of the vehicle and fled the scene with the rest of the gang.

The guard who was struck by the vehicle and another man who was hit with a rock were both taken to the George Town hospital. The man who was hit with the rock has since been discharged but the security guard remains at the hospital in critical condition.

The matter is now under investigation and police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward. Anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw the men at the location earlier in the afternoon/evening is asked to contact George Town CID at 949-4222.

Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or website. Tips can also be submitted anonymously via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online.

I can’t believe the insanity that is happening in our little country. What happened at GTYC is a direct result of poor parenting, substandard public education, and the lack of opportunity created by our government’s willingness to allow the importation of inexpensive labor. If these young people aren’t being parented and properly educated, they will be apathetic towards being part of a merit based society. They will see no value in becoming educated and joining the workforce. Couple that with the fact that they see inexpensive foreign labor doing everything from security guard to supermarket cashier to airport check-in to coffee house barista to plumber to mechanic to waitress to bartender to to to to to. It is no wonder why some young people are lost and disillusioned and lashing out violently. And before you damn me as just another foreigner-basher, don’t waste your time. I have no problem with importing foreign labor, IF AND WHEN our country is at or near full employment. Period. As it should be in any country. As it is in YOUR home country. And I’m not by any means excusing this disgustingly violent act at GTYC. I’m saying look at what the least advantaged members of our country have to work with. Look at what they have to look forward to once they have to fend for themselves. Instead of pouring hundreds of millions of dollars worth of concrete and steel into the GT harbor, our country needs to invest that money, ingenuity and effort into our PEOPLE! Fix public education. Encourage and support proper parenting. What good will it do to have more tourist visiting if our country is plagued with hopelessness and violent crime??

While most of your comments have great merit and is correct for the most part, none can excuse this gross and unprovoked behaviour by these youths. I don’t care how disenfranchised they are or to be. Even more so because we don’t know if they even are a product of poor parenting and/or proper education or even higher learning. I’m totally disgusted and sure hope law enforcement is able to find and submit for prosecution as well as compensation to the aggrieved parties.

First, by most economists standards we already are at or near full employment in percentage of workforce terms. Second, in what universe does failure to seek a minimum wage job entitle you to run people over and attack security guards?

Speaking to several Caymanian business owners who actively run their own business (not silent partners), they won’t hire Caymanians. Too many times they have hired young Caymanians for these lower paying, hard work type jobs and they said that they either don’t show up or walk out after one day. It costs quite a bit of money to go through the hiring and onboarding process – and when you have a proven trend of people not willing to do the work – you get disenfranchised to using Caymanians for the positions. Sad situation, but while there are Caymanians who are able and willing to do what it takes to find work and excel – just like everywhere else, there are those who aren’t. And while I expect someone knows a particular person who is bright, educated, capable and willing and hasn’t found their ideal job, there are a lot of other people that fit the above problem profile. These “stereotypes” come from somewhere. I agree that a lot of it has to do with societal issues – but “importation” of labor is a symptom of the issue – not the cause.

Well put and some interesting statistics that those of us who are old enough and lived here long enough are aware of this common issue, as seen globally. We see the impact and direct results more frequently because, well, scale differences compared to larger locations with more population.

And in UK news – https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/police-force-arm-every-officer-18966550

The tragedy here (and in the UK) is that private security officers are prohibited from carrying even non-lethal weapons like pepper spray and tasers. In the UK even private ownership of useful things like ASPs is prohibited.

I’ve lived and worked in places where CCW, or the local equivalent of it, was the norm. Crime levels there were pretty close to zero. Simple fact of life – scumbags will use cars as a weapon if, as just happened in the UK, they know the people they’re trying kill aren’t armed. If they thought trying it would result in the windshield being riddled with 9mm or .223 rounds would they do it? Old saying, ‘You have to fight fire with fire.’ Forget locking them up – shoot the SoBs.

Kill swimming trespassers? How about phones and protocol training for minimum wage security guards? By no means am I suggesting that either deserved any of this, but consider that neither security employee escalated this ratcheting encounter, far above their pay-grade, to 9-1-1 dispatch. Why didn’t they call the professional crime fighters? It’s likely, that right up until unfortunate impact, waving their hands, neither thought they’d actually be run down maliciously in a parking lot, because what kind of psycho would do that over a nuisance swimming trespass? If we strive to arm every untrained person to shoot first at any of their perceived threats, every cyclist in the Cayman Islands would be shooting their way through a normal commuting day of traffic leaving a trail of death. Absurd.

This boys need to be rehabilitated or seek psychological intervention. There are reasons why they act this way, probably they are neglected at home or don’t feel love and belongingness. Instead of them placing to prison, they should be placed in rehabilitation center where they will be busy honing their talents and learning craft that will be beneficial upon their released.

This is clearly a continuous trend in the breakdown of the family, as more and more, parents spend less time with kids, working long hours and going out, compounded by the prevalent use of social media etc.

Put that aside for a minute. Its easy to find the impostures. They live in the surrounding area as they travelled on foot, were quick to return with two additional friends, and they seem to know the area quite well so as to be so brazen in their acts. They have visited the marina before, several times. Easy catch?

Caymanians by blood are those who have family ties to the first settlers of Cayman. Also, born in the islands on or before March 26, 1977 and born to the parents of those born within that time frame makes you have Caymanian blood. Whether the blood is indigenous or not it’s not the point.

So a child born in Cayman after 1977 to someone also born in Cayman after 1977 does not have “Caymanian blood” (unless they have some unexplained relationship to a “first settler” – not sure how you define first settler or how you prove the linkage? But equally following your definition if I am a Cornishman with ancestral relationships to the first Boddens to come here I also have Cayman blood, even though I have never set foot in the islands?

Struggling to see the logic here, or the relevance of the cut off point of 1977. Shouldn’t it -if we are being all ancestral about this – way earlier than that?

Yes, society may have let them down, and their fathers abandoned them, but we (society) spends millions on their education and social services. They have learnt this from their fractured family life, a lack of education and the stupidity of unaccountability that is destroying these islands. It also comes from the disrespect shown to expat workers and residents by those who seriously believe that simply being ‘Caymanian’ is an excuse to break the normal conventions of civilised society.

Long gone are the days we could swim anywhere, at the beach at a hotel pool or yatch club pool but today security guards placed there to run you out. For Christ sakes the kids only swimming as the pool is made for. Would they have swallowed up all the water in the pool when they were leaving. I am not giving the youths right for what they did but I saw this coming a long long time.

There’s your entitlement. Someone else builds it, pays for the rent and maintenance, but yet the punk kids whose parents are MIA should be allowed to trash the place. Can I come to your house and thrash around your backyard just to leave the mess for you? You actually think someone who actually tried to kill someone by running them over was just an innocent kid trying to have fun? Nah suh. There is evil in his heart.

Unfortunately, none of the media covered the actual details of the incident. XXX

CNS: I have sent an email to the address you provided and also tried to call the place of business in order to verify your previous comments. However, I have received no reply. The number listed for this business went to another completely different business and whoever answered the phone claimed they had never heard of the name you left. So don’t blame the media. If you want this information to get out please respond to my email. In the meantime, we are also trying to verify other information we have received but until that happens, all we have that we know is true is the information provided in the RCIPS press release.
