(CNS): The police are warning drivers that if there are children in their vehicles, they must be properly strapped in their seats. Traffic and Roads Policing Unit (TRPU) officers have been increasing checks during back-to-school week and have seen “a large number of children travelling in vehicles who have not been wearing their seatbelts”. Police said this is not just a violation of the Traffic Law but poses a danger to children’s lives in the event of a collision.

The RCIPS urged people to ensure that children are wearing their seatbelts, whether in the front or rear of the vehicle, and that child or booster seats are used where appropriate. Drivers who are stopped by the police with children in the car not wearing belts could receive a $200 ticket.

why don’t school buses have seatbelts?

Regulations also provide for up to 5 years jail time for public officials who disregard their occupational duties. Nowhere in the Traffic Law does it state that warnings must be made for the detailed catalogue of fineable-offenses. We need to review the mgmt suite at RCIPS and replace those at the top that either don’t understand their function, or who continue to waffle through their duties while collecting salary, overtime and pension. Effort (value for money) is the real problem, and it is an RCIPS problem.

It is utterly amazing that the RCIPS has to REMIND parents/drivers of this requirement. And we wonder why some children grow up with little regard for laws.

    Please hand out the tickets.

Next time you are out take note of the number of drivers and passengers in the front seats not wearing set belts – you will be surprised (or maybe not).

It’s ironic that motorist are obliged by Law to comply with seatbelt regulations but yet on Public Schools buses there are no seatbelt even if the kids wished to use it. What’s up with that?!

My ex wife intentionally drives our young children around without their car seats as a #### you to me – because apparently using children as a weapon without any regard for their safety is okay – it is child abuse and these people should get much worse than just a small fine.

8:44 – call the police on your ex-wife then and have her fined! That’s child abuse and irresponsible parenting! As a parent myself, that’s so upsetting to hear that a mother would do such a stupid thing!

I’m amazed that this traffic violation still hasn’t been introduced on this island. Your child would be catapulted through the windscreen and definitely result in death. Where is your common sense?? This has been an offence in the UK for many years. In fact, the baby unit at the hospital refuse to discharge a new born unless you have the appropriate belted seat in place for your child. No wonder do many traffic accidents result in death on this island. Dear God!!

The things that I see happening on the road in the morning are nothing short of child abuse and neglect.

What about the 6 kids and 2 adults I saw in the back of a pickup last weekend? The pretense of law enforcement around here is a joke.
