CPA says no to chicken farm

(CNS): Another attempt by a company wanting to create a chicken farm and egg processing plant in East End has been rejected by the Central Planning Authority. Toepaz Ltd made a second application for an $800,000 facility housing 10,000 chickens on over ten acres in the Sunnyfield Road area of the district. But the proximity of the proposed farm to a residential area and the Colliers Wilderness Reserve, home to the released iconic blue iguanas, makes the project untenable.

The CPA has not yet spelled out its reasons for refusing the controversial application at the most recent planning meeting, but it is the second time it has refused the application at this site, even after the application was revised.

The farm received conditional planning permission last May on a different site, but because it was close to the East End water lens, the owners opted for another location.

But after the new location was rejected by the CPA in November last year, the owners appealed, claiming that of the dozens of objection letters the CPA had received were in inadmissible. The Planning Appeals Tribunal upheld the appeal and sent the decision back to the CPA for reconsideration. But the answer was still no.

The CPA can’t and isn’t objection on the business venture, so I don’t think the issue is that it is a chicken farm. The question is whether the property that is to be developed is suitable for a chicken farm. Perhaps a better suitable property needs to be found?

Of course a locally operated chicken farm would be beneficial, but please tell me whether you would be prepared to be living next, or in close proximity to a 10,000 plus hatchery? That’s quite different from having a few wild chickens roaming around your yard…….

Is 50 story tower suitable for Cayman? How about the tunnel? Or Kaboo?
How long would it take before your shops run out of food when major hurricane hits head on and ships and planes stop coming?
Does your country has emergency food supplies that are stored in hurricane proved buildings?

Good job. Chickens exploited for profit, are subject to animal cruelty. The most tortured animals in the world right now, are chickens, cows (beef), and pigs (pork). In the old days, the death of an animal was quick and more humane. But you won’t believe what’s going on in the slaughter houses. The mistreatment and cruelty to animals for the almighty dollar. I don’t want this in Cayman.

Moreover, a big egg business will also take away profit from small local sellers at our market.

Just $hut up. You will sing a different song when you run out of food for any reason such as, a hurricane, terrorism, world’s economy crash, technology crash, etc. If Planes and ships stop coming for just a week, you are $crewed royally.

I believe the owners of the chicken farm should source property in the industrial park or near Camana Bay for this venture. There should not be any problem or complaints or with noise. After all the dump is there, the noise and pollution is there and lots of chickens too. Just my 2 cents.

Hello, But the deny the chicken farm. Yet every visitor to our island I encounter and have a conversation with. ASK THIS QUESTION. WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THE WILD HENS, ROASTERS ROAMING AROUND THE ISLAND. THEY SAY THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. BUT AS USUAL NOTHING GETS DONE BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENS. WHAT A WASTE OF A GOVERNMENT, TIME FOR THEM TO GO.

REMEMBER BIRD FLU SOME YEARS BACK, MIND IT HITS THESE SHORES SOON.

The only venture that is guaranteed approval is selling liquor. Anything that will ruin the lives of young people and cause moral decay will get the full attention of the liquor board.

Could the Cayman Islands Government please tell us where in the Cayman Islands they will allow a chicken farm, or ostrich farm, or are both considered illegal?

Didn’t you read the proposed location is in a residential area and near to the colliers wilderness Reserve. How would you like 10,000 squawking chickens around where you live. Also most of the objection letters were legitimate. What is wrong with persons trying to preserve their residential property for their children and grand children free from all that comes along with a chicken farm. It is past time that Caymanians speak up against things like this. Makes no sense to allow it, then complain for the rest of their lives. Kudos to the planning board for doing the right thing this time.

Cayman should be glad somebody is trying to farm and be self sufficient is something other than importing from overseas. Wonder when that is no longer an option where all the no sayers will get their eggs! Have some foresight rather than just seeing the here and now.

so you would be happy with next door and upwind from you? maybe as pig farm as well?
It would mean more self sufficiency for the rest of us, but I doubt you would ever be able to sell your house or even live in it
