(CNS): Following a successful appeal against his 2017 conviction for the possession of an unlicensed firearm last year, Andy Barnes (40) was found guilty again by a jury on Thursday over a .38 revolver found in the kitchen of the apartment where he was staying. The gun was found by police behind a microwave, and forensic tests revealed that Barnes’ fingerprints and DNA were on the weapon.

For the second time, a jury reached a unanimous guilty verdict. Following the original conviction, the appeal court found that during the first trial the judge had not given the jury sufficient warning regarding evidence from one of the witnesses.

In the first trial Barnes had been jointly charged with Yannick McLaughlin and Amber Yates, both of whom were acquitted by the jury. McLaughlin had given evidence against Barnes but there were questions about police influencing that testimony. After allowing Barnes’ appeal, the judges had ordered a retrial.

Following the original conviction, Barnes had been given the mandatory minimum sentence and has remained in jail. He is expected to be sentenced next month, though it is unlikely that anything will change for the local man, who is no stranger to the law, firearms charges and gang-related crime.

However, Barnes has also been a victim of the West Bay gang crime in which he was once immersed, after his own son, Jeremiah Barnes, who was just 4 years old at the time, was shot and killed by a masked gunman at a West Bay gas station in 2010.

Devon Anglin (35), Barnes one-time friend and later street gang rival, was tried and acquitted twice in relation to the fatal shooting, in which prosecutors alleged Anglin had been aiming at Andy Barnes when he missed and shot his son. No one else has ever been charged or even arrested in relation to the child’s murder.

This island has had its fair share of these wannabe gangsters. We need to drain the swamp of the lot of them because this island is going down the drain rapidly. You all worrying about this Port, i think you need to be worrying more about all this serious escalating crime here. This port will definitely be a waste of money because no tourist will want to visit here. It’s getting not safe to walk the streets or even stay in your own home. What on earth is going on?? Where have all these idiots come from? You can’t put it all down to immigrants. We have our own home grown degenerates here. The Government needs seriously to up their game and sort out this education system because these children need supervising from birth. Parents need clear guidance to learn the correct way to bring up their children for a start. Social service need to monitor their upbringing and spot any weakness and nip it in the bud. The Mash team, as good as they are, need overseas intervention and leadership to take this team forward. There’s not enough money been invested in this team to acquire experienced personnel from the U.K. $50,000 is not enough to attract the right person when they earn more in the U.K. all these school leavers need to be rounded up and put forward for further education, which indeed should be available and mandatory for each and everyone. Granted, not everyone has abilities but why don’t they? There’s nothing no one can achieve if taught the right way and encouraged at home. Unfortunately, a lot of this is down to upbringing…..not school teachers. These problems aren’t exclusive to Cayman but for a small island, it’s way over. Who wants to bring up children in this environment. They are our future Cayman……and what a frightening future it’s going to be.

I gave you a thumbs up because I understand what you’re saying! But to me calling them “wannabe gangsters” only make them wanna go prove themselves!!

Exactly. Wanna-be or not, the end result is the same. As petty as it may seem, it’s no more petty than someone being gunned down for wearing a blue/red garment; they’re all idiots if you ask me.

That right there is the reason why these punks exist. Obviously you are family or friend. Instead of agreeing with his foolishness may be you should tell the police who they are that want to kill him and why. We are all tired of them, not just reading about them but just tired. He should be able to see that his bad boy ways not helping, will he still be carrying a gun when he is 80 years because someone is out to get him?
