(CNS): A 65-year-old woman who was charged with fraudulently obtaining around $30,000 from the Needs Assessment Unit admitted on Monday to false accounting, just as her trial on two counts of obtaining money by deception was due to begin. The crown accepted Hermine Stoney’s admission to false accounting after she had failed to admit on official forms that she had sold a property and had more assets than the $250 per month she had claimed was her only income.

Stoney admitted that she had tried to ring-fence the money from the sale of the house for her son to cover the cost of his university education in the UK. As a result she had not revealed the asset when she applied or when she continued to receive payments over a three-year period from the NAU, which at the time was within the Department of Children and Family Services.

Stoney, who worked for many years as a receptionist at CUC, is expected to be sentenced in September.

Well done NAU!!! All those defrauding the department should take this as a warning because I’m sure more investigations will take place. Maybe the government keep understaffing this department so the can continue with handouts without proper checks. The Ministry need to provide more support to this department! More money for the people that really need it if they are staffed to be able to catch more fraud.

NAU needs to require clients to provide social media accounts as there are those who live way beyond what one would expect to be their means whilst utilising NAU to pay for school lunches, rent, food vouchers and utilities. It appears that some clients even promote and run entertainment events on a regular basis.

This is why the people that really need assistance are denied because those that have plenty of money or assets are the ones that are receiving assistance. NAU is one of the most important department of this country they are there to help people in need mostly the older folks who are not getting assistance. If they are short of staff the CIG needs to give them the necessary people to help make the department more accountable.

Pleading guilty at the last minutes wastes everyone’s time, preparing for the case, bringing witnesses etc. In this situation she should not be given any discount for the plea.

You are correct – but part of the problem is that Minister responsible for NAU and both MLA’s for Brac are appeasing to an ever-growing segment of the Brac community.

It is strange that there are a number of people receiving NAU assistance that will work on roadside cleanup, but otherwise will not work. And you can’t help but notice them waiting around the bank on “payday” and then going across the street to buy some liquor.

Some people getting assistance but can afford to go on vacation three times in a year?

The problem isn’t the elderly looking to smooch off of government, many just try to scrape by on the minimum. Problem is the younger able-bodied men/women who feel that government owes them something and they know how to play the NAU game.
These young people (especially on Brac) are not stupid – why get a job and work if you can get NAU to pay for anything! Not sure where they get to the money to go to Grand Cayman, get nails/hair done, party whenever they want, etc, etc.
NAU is one of the biggest employers on the island – just fill out a form, come in for an interview, receive benefits, register with NWDA, and renew your agreement for services with NAU whenever you need it – great life, eh?

Doesn’t NAU do bank/financial institution checks on all clients once they have initially applied for services? Doesn’t NAU maintain a standardized format to request the information from the banks/financial institutions? Also, doesn’t NAU do Land Registry checks on all applicants? This could easily be arranged by the Minister’s responsible for each department.
It seems like my questions would just be common sense things that NAU would do as part of the application process. And the excuse that they are short-staffed is just that, an excuse. Always hear about problems with NAU – a reflection of the inept leadership from Ministry, down to the NAU director.

The problem continues to stem from the Ministry as the department is underfunded every year with aid for the public and lack of staff. The Director has made these challenges known on many occasions but seems the Chief Officer is just not interested or incapable of solving these issues.
