Medical evacuation, 20 July 2019

(CNS): The RCIPS Air Operations Unit carried out two medical evacuations from Cayman Brac to Grand Cayman this weekend using the police helicopter, which is becoming an increasingly important tool in medical emergencies. The chopper and crew transported a woman suffering from possible heart failure early Saturday morning and a man who was involved in a serious motorbike crash later that day.

The woman had been transported from Little Cayman to Cayman Brac by boat and doctors had requested the airlift late Friday night, but weather prevented the helicopter from flying. Police said that her condition had stabilised overnight, but as she still required attention from cardiac specialists, the decision was made to conduct the evacuation, which was completed by 8:15am on Saturday.

That evening a motorcycle rider lost control of his bike and crashed into a light pole on Cayman Brac, sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A second helicopter crew was called in and deployed, and they completed the evacuation to Grand Cayman by 6:15pm. He remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.

The RCIPS do bill the insurance companies for these flights. Seeing how several of you asked. CNS – confirm it with their public relations people.

I hope insurance companies are being billed for the evacuations because if not the patients with non-life threatening injuries should be transported by plane for less than 1/10 the cost of using the helicopter.

I heard it was three medivacs from Brac. A guy fell off a roof and was airlifted too. Apparently, the x-ray machine is busted so anybody that requires x-rays is taken to Grand.

yes it was three medevac’s Cayman Airways did one but don’t worry their insurance provider get billed for that, maybe do an FOI request to see it the RCIPS is also billing for the use of the helicopter.

That is correct 8:07 PM – the guy who fell off the roof was visiting his grandparents and assisting with the taking off the old metal roofing. Neither of them was using any sort of protective equipment or ropes. Ice/water shield was put on and again neither of them was using any sort of protective equipment or ropes. The grandfather should have known better as he is known to do constructing work, not sure about the grandson and why he was working without a work permit.

    • Week end terrorist says:

The government paid for the shipping to the Brac free of charge 18 jet skis and the motor cyclist who fell off after doing stuns to terrorize Brackers like how they do in GC on sundays. CNS could you foi how much it cost to ship 18 jet skis and 30 motor bikes and free plane tickets for 50 rebels including accomadations to terrorize Brackers for the week end. The Brac has such poor representatives. Is this what they are doing to stimulated the Brac economy. Caymanians stop the government spending of money. This is why CI is the most expensive place in the world.

CNS: Anyone can do an FOI and you can do so anonymously. We’ll gladly publish the results.

Is it just me or have the Brackas started using the chopper as a taxi to Grand?

Interesting, or maybe not! Meaning, this may not exactly be news! The purpose of this type of chopper was exactly to assist with emergency airlift situations and other appropriate uses and not just for searching for overnight canoes. The acquisition and operational costs cannot be justified by using it only for border patrol purposes.

Therefore is it that every time it’s used for additional purposes, such as emergency airlift, it will be the subject of a news story?

Why not? It is up to the media what they publish, so clearly the media houses believe it is newsworthy?? As you say on the reason, public money was used to purchase the helicopter, so probably right they let us know what they are doing? Now I am wondering why I bothered responding to your non comment.

The cool thing is that the content of the article is summarized in the headline so you can choose whether to click or not. Feel free not to click on the next article that covers a medevac.
