New bus stop location

(CNS): As the National Roads Authority completes the work it has been doing in the Shedden Road-Crewe Road area close to the airport perimeter, it has received approval to move a public bus stop shelter to what it said was a safer and more convenient location. The existing bus stop is by the airport fence, across from Mango Tree, but officials said with the road upgrade there is no longer sufficient space, and with safety concerns for bus-users, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, it will move this weekend to outside the NAPA Auto Parts Store a few yards away.

The NRA said the move followed “a period of considered consultation” and the new 6ft by 10ft shelter will be erected on Sunday, 26 May, at the western side of the store on Shedden Road.

“The relocated bus shelter will provide all road-users with myriad benefits,” officials said in a release. “The new location will minimise the need for pedestrians to cross the wider, multi-lane roads to access it. Primarily, this consideration has been taken for Foster’s customers, who will no longer need to cross three lanes of traffic on Dorcy Drive to reach the bus stop. The potential risk of collisions between pedestrians and vehicles will, therefore, be reduced, improving overall road safety and ease of usage for all.”

The NRA said the bus access will be improved and safety for bus-users enhanced by the fact that traffic speed at the new location is reduced and the site works alongside the established east-bound bus route.

With no major works needed to prepare the new location, all that will be required is for the NRA to spread some crusher run material to ensure the shelter is placed on a level surface, trim trees and put up a sign to promote the new bus stop.

The NRA said it was grateful to Rotary Central for their assistance as constructing, installing and maintaining bus shelters is one of the NGO’s major projects, and advertising revenue generated from the shelters is reinvested into the community.

Could the NRA / RCIPs push to make these “bus stops” the only place that a bus can pick up a passenger / a passenger can get on a bus?

It will make the roads safer for all concerned.

You’d never know there was any thought for safety put into the placement of these shelters. It is even more damning to know that committees actually convened to put them in all the other dangerous traffic choke points, junctions, and crosswalk zones where they are found. Why do they put a pedestrian stop anywhere near a traffic junction or pedestrian crossing?

Can the NRA please address the following:

    1) Move the bus stop away from the entrance to Kirk Market. When a bus is parked there, you cannot see around it when pulling in or out of the main entrance.

    2) Put in a turning lane to Fosters Food Fair at the airport. The traffic is backed up to the roundabout and beyond waiting for people to get into the supermarket parking lot.

…and stopping arbitrarily in both directions to let preferred buddies out.

And a turning lane on Walkers Rd in the area of the 3 schools since most of these 3rd world drivers don’t know you shouldn’t swing left to turn right and you have the right to go around those turning into the schools.

It’s great that they’re trying to make taking public transport a bit safer, but the waiting area for a bus is not the weakest link when it comes to safety and public buses.

There is also to near the Kimpton and right before the bridge on either side..Someone is going to get killed here trying to cross that highway..They should move them on to West Bay road on the south side of the Kimpton near the Public Beach…Of course that only solves half the problem because the buses continue to stop anywhere along that highway and if government does take this issue in hand soon we are going to have some serious accidents..

A cross walk is badly needed by Cayman National Bank. Individuals are risking their lives every dsy trying to cross the road in order to reach the bank.

And then!! You get to walk in the road/driveway to get to the entrance of the bank. Good thinking CNB!! No sidewalks for pedestrians. This tells you that Cayman walk built for a few cars. Not the pedestrians nor the real number of cars on our roads.

  7. Its The Law says:

While the NRA installs pedestrian crossings, it is the Minister responsible for roads (Min Joey Hew) who is responsible for designating where they should be placed, viz s. 110 of the Traffic Law:
“The Minister charged with the responsibility for roads may designate road crossings for use by pedestrians in priority to other road users.”
The Traffic Law also establishes the Traffic Management Panel under s. 107 made up of the Director of Licensing, the Commissioner of Police, the Managing Director of the NRA, the Chief Officer of the Ministry responsible for roads and one member selected from among persons living on Cayman Brac or Little Cayman to advise the Minister on such matters.
So while the NRA installed all those pedestrian crossings on N Church St and Mary St, for example, the NRA would not have been responsible for deciding that they were needed. Under the law, that is beyond them. You have to be a minister to know how many pedestrian crossings are needed and where..

Nothing would be done about it anyways.
Government run public buses are the solution.
And get rid of these jamaicans. Horrible agressive drivers.

Who thought that 2 pedestrian crossings, 30 feet apart and straddling a junction at the Lobster Pot was a good idea? Probably the daftest thing I’ve seen on this island.

You probably weren’t here for the white picket “traffic refuges” on west bay road. Those “Frogger” death traps took the prize.

same by Casa Nova, and the original pedestrian crossing 150 feet south by balboa beach does not have any pedestrian crossing signs, nor does the crossing on cardinal ave and that one i emailed the NRA about like 10 times.over last 4 years. And why is the speed limit 25 mph in George Town? Really? Should be 15 mph. So many drivers come FLYING up Cardinal Ave. Where are the Police speed traps ? Stop the Fast and Furious !

will the NRA also please for gods sake change the pedestrian crossings so that traffic can flow instead of people crossing the road one by one. It’s simple. Get a buzzer than when pressed says “wait” or “walk”. I’m fed up of watching tourists and people around government house crossing the road like ducks. Use some logic people!

The NRA needs to remove the street sign and open the left turn lane at the Shedden Rd Eastern Ave junction approaching from the Post Office.. Also both ends of McField Lane need widening. I put these requests to them in writing months ago and although they replied they were “working on it” nothing has happened. I also suggested that a centre lane marking be put in at the end of Shedden Rd where it meets Harbour Drive and instal signs requesting drivers to pull over to the left or right depending on the direction they are turning. At present drivers turning right and having to wait for traffic from both directions are holding up those turning left as they stop in the middle of the road.

Thank you NRA, Rotary and NAPA owners for allowing the bus shelter on their property. NRA when are you going to provide space when building and redesigning roads for buses to pull over. We need someone at the NRA that knows what he/she is doing.
