GTPS makes progress but challenges remain

George Town Primary School, Cayman News Service(CNS): After its third follow-up inspection report last month, George Town Primary School has made enough progress for inspectors to rate the school as ‘satisfactory’ after its previous ratings of weak. In this latest report inspectors said the GTPS had addressed all six of the recommendations made in 2015. The first had been for the school to improve the teaching of maths, and although inspectors found that progress had been made and a majority of students were achieving the expected level, they still warned that the quality of teaching in certain classes was too variable.

The inspectors found that several challenges at the school were being addressed but stated, “Although the incidents of weak teaching had reduced since the time of the first follow-through inspection in January 2018, the Principal, Department of Education Services and Ministry of Education had not yet ensured consistently effective teaching, particularly in Key Stage 2.”

However, the inspectors noted, “The decision to place teachers from other schools who had been identified as requiring support into this school adversely affected the capacity of George Town Primary School to improve at the required pace.”

They also said that while there were improvements, “behaviour challenges were still evident in a few classes and this adversely affected the pace of students’ learning”.

All this at what was once the best elementary school in Grand Cayman, while the fight for gay rights and a new cruise berth takes the head of the race.

Why is it EDUCATION ALWAYS have the last thought (if at all), when we know KNOWLEDGE is power and EDUCATION is the key to raising productive citizens?

Why is this school not getting what it needs? This revaluation is incomprehensible SMH.

We shouldn’t concern ourselves with this. Our money is better spent on frivolous appeals against gay marriage.

Really? Place a disproportionate number of teachers who need support at George Town Primary? Very unfair. The only teachers employed who should need/get support are first or second year Caymanians. Other than that, they should be gone.

6.45pm I agree, why lumber GT Primary with these liabilities. If they need support they should not have been hired in the first place and should be dismissed, but I suppose this is never an option with the public service.

You can give all the support you like, some of the teachers should not be near a classroom and no matter how much support is given, they are crap and will remain crap.

It should concern you that George Town has a teacher there that was moved from another school because she was so appalling. Her treatment of our children is a disgrace, she cannot teach and appears not to even like children.
