DEH falls behind on commercial rubbish collection

| 24/05/2019 | 22 Comments

Cayman News Service(CNS): Once again, officials from the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) have issued apologies for falling behind on the collection of garbage from its commercial customers in Grand Cayman. In addition, collection at residential properties with ten or more units with DEH skips experienced delays, officials said. The DEH said this was due to a a mechanical breakdown of commercial equipment, including one of its front-end loaders and both its grab trucks.

Despite being the department’s primary function, garbage collection remains a constant challenge and the DEH said it wanted to assure the public that in the interim it will use all its available resources to ensure that garbage is collected from each of the affected areas over the next few days.

“The department once again apologises to its commercial customers for these delays and urges those who continue to experience non-collection of their garbage to make contact with our Grand Cayman office,” officials stated in a release.

The DEH can be reached on 949-6696 or by email at dehcustomerservice@gov.ky

Govt should get out of commercial garbage collection and concentrate on improving household garbage collection and enforcement.

“mechanical breakdown of commercial equipment, including one of its front-end loaders and both its grab trucks” – Can DEH say how many front-end loading ‘skip’ trucks it has? And how many it needs/uses on a given day?

Because if one skip-truck going down meant delayed pickup then that means they have no back-ups and are clearly using the grab trucks as back-up skip-clearing trucks (as evidenced by the two being down being mentioned as part of the problem). Part of the problem sounds like CIG cut the truck buying budget last year and didn’t buy the replacement/reserve truck(s) so they’d have them when they need them.

Its it really that hard/difficult to get a department organized and operating as it should. These so called “Directors” with all kinds of degrees what are they doing all day. If it means getting out there and driving the truck then do it. Lead by example people. No more excuses DG get it done.

    So what else is new?

Aside from DEH not getting themselves organized considering the growth of population and increase of commercial places, a lot of commercial places could also do much better when it comes to recycling.

For example bulky card board boxes are thrown into the dumpster. They should be opened, flattened and stacked up and the be taken to the recycling places. How many restaurants and bars still don’t recycle glass and plastic bottles?

    Everyone needs to step up!

DEH, please exit the commercial garbage business. Government does not need to do this anymore. There are a few private companies already offering the same services. These issues do not arise. Give them a date when DEH will leave the market (end of 2019) and they will expand and others will join them. Sell off your equipment and let staff move to the private sector or switch them to the household side of your operation.
I do not have anything to do with these businesses but I do use them and have had NO ISSUES since I switched from DEH a few years ago.

Seriously CIG, it’s garbage pickup…..not rocket science. Leadership, and I use the term loosely, at DEH should be fired, from the Minister responsible straight down to the Seniors Managers. How can you not figure out how to collect garbage? And we wonder why nothing has been done about the dump? A 10 year old could run the department better.

The ongoing failure of DEH / CIG to maintain its fleet, collect and properly dispose trash consistently, is utterly appalling at this point!
Here we are touting our financial and tourism successes and yet trash is overflowing and sometimes collected a week late! And then CIG is talking about increasing resident and tourist numbers? When it cannot collect trash for the numbers we’re currently at?
This mess really needs to stop!

Please, please, please privatize public and commercial rubbish collection. The CIG has proven they cannot do it time and time again.

When they will learn to service vehicles properly? Get night shift mechanics to check service vehicles daily!

It is most disgusting having to drive through certain areas of Windsor Park. For a moment you forget that you are in Cayman. If your car window is down the garbage by the side of the road burns your nostrils. Then there are the cars in galore. Some usable and some that need to be dumped. The trees by the side of the road that need to be cut…. Would the Department responsible please go take a peep at this. Most disgusting…. A lot re rentals and I am so sorry for the land Lords as the tenants just don’t care.

Think you’ll find the land lords don’t care either. There are slum lords galore on this island. The stories my child’s nanny had told me makes me sick how these people treat expat low income workers.

How many times will they have to apologise for not doing their job before something gets done about it?

If I messed up this much at my work, not doing the ONLY thing I’m supposed to do, I’d be fired a long time ago! DEH, get your act together!
