Juliana O’Connor-Connolly in the LA on 3 April 2019

(CNS) UPDATED WITH RESPONSE FROM DAY: Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly has urged the public to attend, uninvited, to what will be the first ever same-sex marriage in the Cayman Islands in order to object to it. In her contribution to a debate in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, the member for Cayman Brac East implied that gay people are evil. But the minister also read out details of the marriage notice for the two women, Chantelle Day and Vickie Bodden, who successfully petitioned the court for their right to marry.

She told people they could object to the union ahead of the wedding, but if they missed that “window of opportunity”, they should go to the ceremony and object then.

In response to the minister, Day told CNS, “The marriage law has been modified with immediate effect by the chief justice and same-sex marriage is now legal. The minister of education’s call for objections to our marriage in writing/in person demonstrates a blatant disregard for the rule of law, and raises concerns of abuse of her position of power as a leader in our community. It also shows a complete disregard to the call from the premier urging everyone to act respectfully.”

In the LA on Wednesday, O’Connor-Connolly accused Chief Justice Anthony Smellie, who legalised same-sex marriage from the bench last Friday, of “judicial tyranny”, and did not hold back on expressing the religious beliefs fuelling her objections to the decision.

The debate was triggered by a private member’s motion tabled by Arden McLean (East End) and seconded by Anthony Eden (Savannah). It was moved up the order paper by the premier after he delivered a statement outlining the government’s intention to appeal the decision of the chief justice in the Day and Bodden same-sex marriage case.

The education minister labelled last Friday, the day the chief justice delivered his decision in the case that was heard in the Grand Court in February, as “Black Friday” and claimed it was another signal of the impending end of days, as she derided those who would dismiss her comments as religious bigotry.

But like many of the members who spoke in the debate about the judgment that delivered marriage equality for the Cayman Islands last week, she focused her debate on the opinion that the judge overstepped his powers when he changed the law. She suggested he had put the democracy here at “grave risk” and said the judgment was based on “foreign disciplines” coming from people who have an agenda.

“I just can’t find the words to adequately describe the tsunami — spiritual, social and otherwise — that has been going through this country since last Friday,” O’Connor-Connolly said. But she said that the legislature had started the “resurrection” after Black Friday with this motion and debate and the government’s decision to appeal.

Government is also seeking a stay to prevent the law from taking effect, but it is not clear that even if the attorney general was able to successfully receive such a stay from the Court of Appeal, it would be in time to prevent Chantelle Day and Vickie Bodden from marrying next week, as planned, or stall any other ceremonies where a same-sex couple has already received a licence.

It is not yet known how many local same-sex couples have so far applied to the General Registry for licences to marry, but CNS understands that a number were planning to do so in light of the chief justice’s ruling.

It is also understood that a number of Caymanians who have married overseas are now seeking to have their expatriate spouses listed as dependents, since those marriages have also been legitimised and recognised in law locally as a result of the CJ’s ruling, which currently still stands.

The irony and hypocrisy is astounding! Especially that of our elected representatives! While the “general” and “overriding” sentiment is that Caymanians are by-and-large God-fearing Christians, they seems to conveniently overlook a fundamental Christian principle of loving each other as God loves us!

There is no question that “closeted” homosexuality exists in our society, as it does everywhere. There is also a large adherence to “down-low” activity. That being the outward abhorrence of homosexuality while at the same time loving men and boys sexually. Many Caymanian married men practice this undercover “bi” activity.

Wonder what two particular prominent male, married Members of the Legislative Assembly have to say about that?!!

Any proceedings filed against Julianna will fail on it’s very application because every MLA enjoys the protection of parliamentary privilege for anything they say in the Legislative Assembly.

Parliamentary privilege: legal immunity enjoyed by members of certain legislatures, in which legislators are granted protection against civil or criminal liability for actions done or statements made in the course of their legislative duties.

I think what we are hearing here is that those that believe it is their purview to judge (and loudly) are being heard. I am a Caymanian, and so is my wife, and we don’t want to stop same sex marriage. I suspect there are many heterosexuals who feel much the same, but aren’t being as vocal as those who are currently demanding to be heard.

Why? (1) it doesn’t affect us (2) it’s none of our business (3) we believe with all our hearts in the concept of equality for all.

The Bible is a great book, an inspired book. It should be used to lift people up, to aspire to be as Christ-like as they are able.

I am so weary of people cherry-picking passages and verses of the Holy Bible to persecute people, while conveniently ignoring other passages which would be patently illegal if embraced. There is the rule of God, and the law of man. They each have their place in the fabric of our existence, but should never be mixed.

God gave us Ten Commandments — not so much to live by. He gave us free will also, to follow His laws or not.

Our beloved Constitution should not and cannot be overruled by religious doctrine. The rule of Law — Our rules we chose — insist upon equal rights, and legislate against discrimination.

God never sent people to judge other whole groups. You are not doing God’s work if you persecute people different from yourself.

CNS: You cannot just object because you feel like it. The Marriage Law: “If it appears to the Judge that the objection, in case of an objection to a marriage, was frivolous and vexatious, he may condemn the party making it to pay, in addition to costs and all civil damages to which he may be liable, a fine not exceeding forty dollars, to be enforced in the same way as a judgement of the Grand Court.”

She has no sense of the high standards of the office she holds and, among other responsibilities, is a representative of all citizens and residents. To incite people to disrupt a private wedding ceremony and her attacks on the Judiciary is reprehensible, and unbecoming of a government minister and a (so-called) Christian, who seem to have no problem trafficking in hate, while turning a blind eye to adulterous relationships that destroys the union of marriage (as in the form that it existed before) and the impacts on the children of the marriage.

I’m not gay and is a person of faith but as the victim of discrimination, I cannot support discrimination against another no matter the difference. It’s repugnant what she and others have done to one of their own, who has led an upstanding life, including representing her country overseas and is a productive member of society.

P.S. Why are civil servants allowed to sign a petition against same sex unions but are precluded from signing a petition against the cruise pier that will be far more consequential (good/bad) than two consenting adults having equal rights to express their marriage vows?

You obviously did not listen to what the lady said, she did not instruct anyone to disrupt the wedding ceremony. She read the notice which she had received, stating the date of the wedding. The notice also stated that the public had seven days to raise their objections if they so wished. She then said, if you intend to object, you had to do so within the given seven days. Where is the inciting of violence or ordering public to disrupt the wedding ceremony?

So let me get this straight. The Education Minister has the ability AND time to focus solely on promoting a hate crime? (FYI-which will be picked up by international media sites- so sad) BUT she doesn’t have enough time to speak to families when asked to or to generate an idea to address the issue of families who cannot obtain an appropriate education center for their child who has special learning needs.

She is, in fact, actually shutting those education centers down in September!!!!!!!!!!!! Where is the compassion and fervor for those children? They have nowhere to go and zero supports!

The “Minister” has the time to spew hate but not enough time to address the deplorable standards facing the youth in Cayman schools.

She collects a pay check to promote unlawful activity but cannot address the gang issue inside of schools which will eventually seep out into mainstream society.

    I could go on but…

Wow… what a banana boat republic the Caymans looks like to the world now. What does this say about Government and the people?

This woman needs to be fired. Her peers need to redeem themselves or find their spines and make an example of her before people start calling for a boycott of this island and then you will have more social issues to deal with.

She is a a poor excuse for a Minister of Education and as a human. I do not want her to be the head of education for my children’s sake as she is such a poor example.

I will, in turn, will be educating my children on who this woman is and make an example of her to them of what not to become when they get older – an angry bigot who has her own agenda

I am against it, not to the point where I would protest it, but it does not mean I hate gays! For goodnes sake get a grip! Of course I would be called a ‘bigot’ etc, seems anyone who expresses an opposing view is labelled homophobic or a bigot these days. Duly supported by the biased opinion of CNS too. Part of the problem here is CNS supporting their own agenda. Pretty trashy journalism in my opinion

CNS: I’m not sure what you think our “own agenda” is, since no one at CNS is gay. I know that many people think that if you support the LGBT community you must be gay, but this is just plain ignorance. We are, however, against discrimination. We are also “biased” against racism, for example, as any decent person would be. But where you agree with our biases, you just don’t notice.

The intention to object to a marriage on the basis of your own views on it is despicable, whether or not you have the right to do so. However, from the Marriage Law (which is in the CNS Library): “If it appears to the Judge that the objection, in case of an objection to a marriage, was frivolous and vexatious, he may condemn the party making it to pay, in addition to costs and all civil damages to which he may be liable, a fine not exceeding forty dollars, to be enforced in the same way as a judgement of the Grand Court.”

An Education Minister who is encouraging, let’s be frank, a hate crime… Caymankind.

I hope every person in the world boycotts the Cayman Islands.

You can’t hide behind your bibles when everything you do, as a collective populace, is so dirty, corrupt, and unloving.

The Education Minister is saying it’s ok to break the law because her bible tells her so.

I just want to know, why when it was against the law two same sex people did not get married in Cayman; now that the law allows it, she is telling people to break the law, show up uninvited and PROTEST that marriage!

    How dare she?

There was a protest earlier this week calling for homosexuals to be killed!!!

This woman, the Education Minister for the Cayman Islands no less, condones another protest!

O’Connor Connolly condones a hate crime.

An elected official, in charge of education, condones hate.

    She encourages hate.

I won’t spend another penny in the Cayman Islands.

There are many of us on this island who agree with you, but hoping for and calling for the world to boycott us may well end up hurting us. Please reconsider your future calls for boycotts in situations that may adversely affect people who may be on your side on issues. Boycotts aren’t always the answer to everything.
      Thank you.

How do you expect your leaders to get the drift? What are you doing?

Do you see how they, and by extension YOU, are ruining the Cayman Islands?

People are standing by watching while a port is getting ready to be built that will forever change the marine environment around GT.

People are standing by watching while CIG allows DART to destroy a marine park up in Barkers.

People are standing by watching when garbage is not being picked up. There is bio-waste piling at the hospital and not being collected regularly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People are standing by watching while a dump towers and leaches into the North Sound.

People are standing by watching while your country men go without food and basic human necessities.

People are standing by watching while your education system FAILS your children.

People are standing by watching while the most absolute corrupt crimes take place in the Cayman Islands without so much as a glance.

People are standing by watching while the RCIPS doesn’t respond to calls in a timely manner, or at all, and the police force is lacking with staff.

People are standing by watching while crime sky rockets.

People are standing by watching while the Minister of Education has encouraged the people of the Cayman Islands to take place in a hate crime.

        Are you kidding me?!!!!

        Boycott the Cayman Islands.

Maybe once it hits your pockets, you’ll understand how your social apathy and homophobia is seen by the rest of the world.

You have all had the chance to stand up and protest and do the right thing on so many issues, yet marriage equality is the one the that gets the attention. So be it.

Cayman Islands: The Spotlight is on YOU.

        Boycott the Cayman Islands.

I took another minute to think about your post. I’m 6:42 and 10:44.

I’m going to put this to you as nicely as I can 10:26. I feel for your plight. But I wonder if you feel for the plight of your brothers and sisters in the world, too?

I wonder if you know that there are Consulates around the world who will get wind of this story, the protest where someone held a sign that said to kill homosexuals, and put out a travel warning about the Cayman Islands:

That if your are LGBTQ, it is NOT SAFE to travel to Cayman.

Other parts of the world will intervene.

Moreover, this is a silly issue, don’t you agree? Don’t you agree that people are entitled to spread love and joy and peace. That’s all this law is allowing.

Instead we are seeing it twisted, in sick ways. Hidden behind bibles.

I’d like to see the Cayman Islands speak up.

Speak up on all of the travesties that are threatening the quality of life that all of us have enjoyed up until the point. That’s all.

People sharing in the joy of a wedding does not affect anyone’s quality of life. Just the opposite really.

But let us muse for a moment what will happen when the next Cat 5 hurricane rips up Cayman.

We were taught in school to be stewards of our planet.

How are the residents in the Cayman Islands being stewards of our planet?

How is the planet being protected?

A Cat 5 will show the massive poverty that the Cayman Islands hides so well.

A Cat 5 will will blow the piles of trash at the dump all the way to Hawaii. Have you seen the photos of trash in the seas?

What is Cayman doing on behalf of the environment?

I’ll tell you: Cayman is destroying the environment. Every second article in the news is about how the elite in Cayman are going to build the next “biggest”.

The Cayman Islands are the poster child for $GREED$.

The Cayman Islands are now the poster child for HATE.

While the CIG jetset, spend hundreds of thousands saving face for the Cayman Islands, stopping Cayman from being listed on, heaven forbid, a black list, unspeakable travesties are happening in Cayman.

        Unspeakable.

        And they have absolutely nothing, N O T H I N G, to do with marriage equality.

Let me get this straight. In Cayman its legal to incite hatred and a Minister does not bring the House into disrepute for doing so. Wow just wow!

@12:42 – what gives you the right to disrupt someone else’s wedding? Also what makes you think that you’ll just be able to saunter on to private property and disrupt a wedding?

All you folks wanting to protest this wedding better give this ill-conceived plan a rethink.

It will not end well for you.
