(CNS): Health Minister Dwayne Seymour has said “the fiscal sustainability of healthcare” as well as health insurance cover for those aged 65 and over are areas currently under review in his ministry. But in a message marking World Health Day 2019 focused on universal health coverage, which the WHO believes is a human right, Seymour made no mention of his plans to provide free health cover for children or for a single national health insurance system. Many now believe it is the only solution to unaffordable private insurance and to address the profits in the health insurance sector which are increasingly subsidised by the public purse.

Seymour said that efforts to facilitate access to the best possible primary healthcare for all residents in the Cayman Islands is more challenging than it sounds with no direct taxation, but that government would continue to push for greater strides in healthcare provision.

Start with all the Civil Service freeloaders. Problem is those whose remit it is, are all freeloaders themselves.

I think you have this wrong. The Civil Service has been and should continue to be the CINICO base, as CIG is the largest employer. Now, we need to nationalise it and broaden the base to include everyone. A greater number of the population would be covered, and that would bring group and individual costs down. Those who could afford and wanted more insurance could have it.

Let us understand: Health insurance is like betting against yourself and hoping you lose.

The entire insurance system is crazy, but until somebody invents a better system of societal health care, this seems like the best bet to me to provide coverage for all of us.

Mr Cloun, you live up to your name. The “base” will never be broad enough to cover the almost unlimited gold plated free benefits for our thousands of civil servants and all their dependents. Government could at least mitigate these flood gates by stopping this benefit for new hires but they don’t as their heads are stuck in the sand.

Half the answer can be found in the immigration law, but no one bothers with sensible stuff like enforcing our laws. Look where we are now.

Just set up a National Insurance system for health cover. Do it now.

There is already taxation as it relates to the provision of healthcare as most people that are working today pay for private health insurance. The money used today to pay for private health insurance can simply be directed towards a national health insurance system. Additionally, if the HSA is unable to provide quality healthcare at a reasonable price the government should enter into negotiations with Health City to provide the needed services and do away with the inefficient and costly HSA operation.
