| 15/04/2019

Cayman News Service(CNS) UPDATED: Police have arrested a 28-year-old-man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving a vehicle whilst disqualified, driving a vehicle without insurance and leaving the scene of an accident after a cyclist was killed on the road this morning. An as yet unidentified man, who is a resident of Cayman from overseas, was found unresponsive in North Church Street early Monday, close to Coral Sands.

Police said the man, who had been riding a bicycle, appeared to have been hit by a vehicle. He was taken to hospital at around 5:30am, where he was pronounced dead.

The police have not said where the arrested man is from but said he is now being held pending further investigations by the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit.

The victim in this incident has not yet been identified as police are still trying to contact his family.

Police said the road where the collision happened is still blocked for investigative purposes and it is not clear when the road is expected to be re-opened.

I witness cars doing 60 mph on a regular through that area in town in the morning. I’ve seen a car slide 100 feet until it finally collided with a guard rail. Those of you who venture out on to that road early morning to cycle and, run put your lives in jeapordy even with the appropiate lighting.

With the continued non enforcement of traffic laws the roads continue to be a very dangerous place for all law abiding people. The suicide passers, speeders, and tailgaters rule the streets not to mentions the wheelie popping motorcyclists. Driving here is one big game of chicken.

Government needs to make South Church Street into one lane with traffic from neighborhood going into Walkers road to reach town. Then traffic from town can go eastern districts and South Church Street.

  5. Ride WITH the flow of traffic and NOT on the sidewalks says:

Don’t know the circumstances in this tragic event, but I’ll take this opportunity to remind cyclists that they have a duty of responsibility as well. WAY too many cyclists on this island ride their bikes AGAINST the flow of traffic, which is against the traffic law. Cyclists are required to ride WITH the flow of traffic. Also, far too many cyclists ride on the sidewalks, which is not permitted. Too many cyclists ride at night without a light, which again is against the law. Cyclists need to make every effort to ride in keeping with the traffic law.

Rest in peace.. drivers please drive with care and give them room.

Cyclists benefit their health, ease traffic, and don’t pollute the air. We need more cycling lanes!

Dear me, how could any human being leave an injured person to die on the road. This poor soul was probably going to work this time of the morning. My condolences to his family. May you rest in peace sir.

8.39am You are right, there have been quite a number of these cases, most involving locals, XXXXXX. It also illustrates another problem, too many disqualified drivers are on the road which means of course they are uninsured and will react like this if they have a serious accident.
