Salmonella alert for popular flour brand

Cayman News Service(CNS): The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an alert after the company which makes Pillsbury baking products recalled its Unbleached All-Purpose 5 lb flour bags with ‘best by’ dates of 19 and 20 April 2020 because the product could be contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria. Local officials from the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) said its officers have contacted all wholesalers and supermarkets across the Cayman Islands to ensure that they do not offer the affected product for sale to the public.

Hometown Food Company, which owns Pillsbury, has said that there have no reported cases of illness associated with the recall but it has pulled the product out of an abundance of caution.

The DEH said people should stop using the flour and return any previously bought packages to wherever they were purchased and said anyone who feels that they have become ill from food containing flour should contact their doctor.

The affected items are as follows:

Description Case Item  Code UPC Item Code Lot Code Best if used by date
Pillsbury® Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 5Lb 0 5150022241 3 0 5150022241 6 8 292 19 APR 2020
Pillsbury® Unbleached All-Purpose Flour 5Lb 0 5150022241 3 0 5150022241 6 8 293 20 APR 2020

Salmonella can cause severe infections in young children, seniors and others with weak immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhoea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

For more information about local efforts, contact the DEH at 949-6696.
