La Esperanza, Cayman Brac

(CNS): Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal hit-and-run in the early hours of Friday morning in which an as yet unidentified man, believed to be in his 50’s, was killed on Cayman Brac. The emergency services were called to Watering Place Road, near to the La Esperanza bar, around 4:00 this morning after the man’s body was found unresponsive in the road. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and although there was no vehicle there when first responders arrived, police said the circumstances strongly suggest a hit-and-run.

The road was closed so that officers could begin the investigation and it is expected to remain closed throughout Friday morning. Traffic is being diverted through Anne Tatum Road and Ashton Reid Drive.

The victim is the first person to lose his life on Cayman’s roads this year.

Anyone with any information about this incident, including anyone in the vicinity at the time who may have seen a speeding or damaged vehicle, is asked to contact the Cayman Brac Police Station at 948-0331.

Information can also be passed directly to police anonymously on this website, or externally through Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 or online.

No one will talk. Everyone will get lawyers and everyone will smooth this off. Maybe bars need to close at 12 midnight. Actions have consequences.
All of you over on GC will be pointing fingers at the Brac. Bet you have your share of traffic problems too.

Closing at 12 won’t stop people from getting drunk, just like how banning Sunday alcohol sales didn’t stop it either.

Mitchy made many friends from Grand also. I remember good times at the airport back in the day. RIP Mitchy

This is a very very tragic situation. Chances are he was not mowed down but was probably sleeping in the road or on the side of the road after too much to drink. This is common in the Brac with a few when they have had too much to drink. Some unsuspecting driver (who may have had a few drinks themselves), not expecting to have a human lying in the main road, then runs over them. Very very sad

Huh?! It’s normal for Bracers to sleep in the road drunk? WTF is going on over there?

No, it is not “normal” any more than it is normal in Grand Cayman. There have been extremely rare occasions of drunks passed out off the side of the road, but never IN the road or even on the edge of the road as far as I can recall.

Mitchey often walked home in the wee hours, and he was close to his house at the time he was hit.

Well the poster said normal and here in grand I don’t see people passed out on the road or on the side of the road really ever… so again, what is going on in the brac?

You are wrong on this one. I personally have had to call the police to take this person and others out of the road after too much to drink. Not that it happens all the time but it has happened many times.

Everybody in CYB knows that there is no Law and Order when it comes to Alcohol.

      Straight Facts.

The local Bars (espeacially the one in Wateringplace) sells as much alcohol as possible. No matter how drunk you are. They also stay open wayyýyyy past hours, around the back. Drug use is RAMPANT. If you look in the parking lot and on the road you will see nothing but tire marks. Donuts and vehicle racing launching happen there constantly. Across the street is the local brothel.

The liquor store there on the corner. You can get anything at any time. The owner hangs out by the park selling it outside normal hours. Everybody knows this.

The District Commish, the Two Elected Members. The Police. Best customers.

Nothing is done. Thousands of complaints. Nothing done. Liquor Board. Nothing done……….

Evidence is there for all to see. Nobody cares.

As a Watering Place resident not too far from this place, I agree, with the exception of the “best customers”. I live here. I’ve not seen any of those you listed even in the bar, let alone being “best customers”.

The rest — yep. spot on.

By the way 2:34 pm? What do you mean by donuts? What is that? It is crazy that you trash your own community. Maybe you and others need to now step up to the plate and get involved in putting more restrictions on the liquor license department. This will cut down on crimes over here and there on GC also.

a donut is a circular tire burn mark.

Maybe our elected members who know what is going on should address the problems in the Brac rather than turning a blind eye because certain special people run things.

      • Anonymous says:

Yes this is true. The Brac is a lawless society with those at the very top indulging also.

Yep! I can vouch for that. Last visit I was there, I rented a car and sure enough, there was a guy laying pretty much IN the road. No lie. Looked suspicious so we drove around him and asked at the next place. They verified that it was not unusual.

What the H Brakka’s??? Stay outta the road!
      Can’t fix stupid..

How exactly did a red honda become part of this? Just lastnight cayman brac was blowing up over this “jeep like vehicle” that was caught by gas station cameras flying west shortly after the accident was believed to have happened, and saying that the jeep was found under the bluff spot bay and is currently sitting outside of the police station? This whole situation is a mess.

Maybe the jeep was found under the bluff spot bay because that is where the owner of said jeep lives. Stop spreading gossip

This is really sad. Cayman Brac is so small, why would anyone hit their neighbor and leave him to die? Very sad!

The car probably in the bush on the bluff somewhere. The RCIPS were there from 4:00 a.m. and are still there now at 6: 15 p.m. with no sign of them wrapping it up. They WILL find the person(s) who did this.

The victim had his troubles, but he was a fair shake and didn’t bother anybody. He didn’t deserve to be mowed down.

I feel confident that the investigation is being conducted in a professional manner. I watched them examining something very tiny in the gravel next to the road. It has been an exhaustive investigation.

Just like nothing was written up for closure to this community about that fire truck over turning at the airport? Nothing more will be in the news about this case CNS. Money will talk and people will walk away from this. Typical of no justice for the criminal behaviour and the community. People getting away with crimes. It needs to stop. Update us here on the Brac. We need to know. Not about gossip but about caring for our neighbor we lives close to us.

Strong evidence suggest that Linval went out diving conch, was charged up earlier in the day, left his shoes on the sand. Divers found conch tied up in his shirt. No foul play. Possible shallow water blackout.

My cousin Linval drowned. We looked for his body for weeks. He always wanted to go to Cuba to “see wha’ there”. I hope he finally made it.
