Webb’s sentence postponed for ninth time

(CNS): The Cayman Islands’ one-time local football hero who fell spectacularly from grace almost four years ago in the massive global FIFA scandal has got another postponement in his sentencing hearing. Jeffrey Webb pleaded guilty in December 2015 but for the ninth time the New York court dealing with his case has agreed to push the case back until September, according to reports in online sports media. Despite admitting serious racketeering offences, it is increasingly unlikely that he will go to jail.

The continued delay in the settlement of Webb’s FIFA crimes also impacts his possible extradition back to Cayman to face charges relating to the CarePay hospital corruption scandal.

Webb, who was due to be sentenced this month, has been under house arrest in the US and has already forfeited $6.7 million in illicit proceeds.

Here in Cayman, in addition to his suspected involvement in the CarePay scam, for which his long-time friend and business associate, Canover Watson, has already been found guilty, sentenced and released from jail, Webb is understood to be wanted for questioning in relation to the Cayman Islands Football Association.

CIFA, which has been embroiled in scandals of its own, is also understood to be under some form of investigation by anti-corruption officials.

There was a comment posted online when he first got this job about him stepping into a proverbial nest of vipers – looks like it came true.

This is the most disgraceful use of the criminal justice system, it has been 4 years since the case is open and Jeff Webb along with many other corrupt FIFA official pleaded guilty of taking millions of $$ of brides and even stealing funds sent to hurricane relief in Haiti. If you follow the case many of the other officials have since return home after cooperating with the US? Who are they providing information about? No one is going to be accountable for this. Shameful.

Ever wonder if Webb was a “US plant” from the very beginning?

He did some weird stuff that a real criminal would not even dream of trying whilst living in the US.

If you read the full DoJ indictment, the greed and douche brazenness is breathtaking. Leaves no doubt of long and deep crooked intentions, and that excludes concurrrent Carepay and CIFA clubhouse frauds.

When was he a “local football hero”? Cayman news media keep describing him that way. Why? Being president of a dinky little sports association doesn’t make one a hero.

He was, briefly, the head of CONCACAF (which is a more substantial deal), but we now know in hindsight why he was selected for that.

Very smart strategy. Extension of home detention in exchange for a bit more information. Will do this until time served at home equals time he would have served in prison.

He must have a treasure trove of information to bargain. Genius!

They’re not choosing to do nothing – they’re not able to extradite him until US courts have decided whether to incarcerate him. Read the article.

This is a postponement of the USA side of things. As far as we can tell, CIFA, the instrument for soccer in the Cayman Islands, and the array of businesses implicated in concurrent CarePay scandal, have not come under any Cayman Islands-propelled scrutiny or re-organization orders. Once again, we must be waiting for all the records to be burned.
