Cruise ship visits Cayman

(CNS): Activists who are organising the ‘Cayman 2020 – Visualising Our Future’ town hall community event tomorrow, Saturday 19 January, from noon until 4:00pm at the South Sound Community Centre are urging people to come out and meet with the organisers, speakers and community groups to help shape ideas for the future of Cayman. The National Trust, CCMI, Saved the Cove, Save Barkers, Save Cayman and CPR Cayman will all be represented at the event, which is being held to enable the public to share, learn, engage and collectively visualise the future of the Cayman Islands, with an emphasis on preserving the natural and heritage resources.

Participating groups will be presenting on a range of topics, including sustainable development, tourism, social well-being and community development, as well as  environmental conservation efforts and legislation. There will also be a chance to sign the referendum petition and learn about other pressing issues and ongoing threats to the environment and the community at large that need public attention now as well as issues relating to the future.

CPR Cayman spokesperson and one of the event organisers, Katrina Jurn, explained the impetus for Cayman 2020.

‘The groundswell of support and concerns expressed from various sectors of the Caymanian community is at the heart of this event and the people-initiated referendum,” she said. “There are many stakeholders who want to protect our country and are concerned about how decisions are being made. The various topical issues impacting us all today have the potential to negatively impact current and future generations in a myriad of ways. These concerns include environmental, socio-economic and long-term financial concerns.”

Many people in the community have expressed concern in recent times about the lack of strategic long-term planning and community engagement and the aim of this event is for the public to begin filling that void.

“We understand the need for unity as we all want to live in a Cayman that is safe, clean, environmentally protected and demonstrates stability, participatory democracy, sound financial management and good governance,” Jurn said. “Cayman 2020 we hope will be the start of a new era of greater community involvement in building a better Cayman for all citizens and residents.”

Admission to the event is free and open to the general public. For more information and event updates, please follow the Event Facebook page or email the CPR Facebook page or cprcayman@gmail.com

still can’t understand why Caymanians wants to destroy its natural environment, little as it is.

Do you think the tourists will continue to come when there is only cement to look forward to. Get it through your heads that the Freeport shops are going to be history before long. China and crystal are not in vouge very much these days.

“Transparency” under threat of criminal prosecution, is what Cayman Islands needs more of to ensure some semblance of good governance. Without a Petition to enact the “Standards in Public Life Law”, nothing more happens in that regard. Not one single Caymanian voter has managed to figure this out yet…unless you criminally disincentivize the ongoing self-service and collusion, a new assortment of embezzling goons for 2020, or 2024, or 2028 won’t fix anything.

What a waste of a good Saturday afternoon that was. Same little group of blowhards with the same tired mantra. Saved nothing yet, no hope of saving anything in the future. Save our souls!

The best way to “save cayman” is to get everyone off the Island and come back for eco tourism only. No cars to run over the soldier crabs and such, and vegans only can visit to lower the methane flatulence output into the environment.
