Prime Minister Theresa May puts her case for the Brexit deal to the House of Commons

(CNS): The British House of Commons is still on track to vote on the deal that Prime Minister Theresa May has presented as the country’s only path to Brexit. Speaking in the Commons on Monday, May made a last-ditch effort to rally the votes she needs but is very unlikely to get in order to steer the agreement through Parliament. She urged MPs to give the deal a second look as she warned about the consequences of voting against it, and implied that the only options were crashing out with no deal, which would be disastrous, or blocking Brexit, which would be a subversion of democracy.

May accepted that the deal was not perfect and that it is a compromise, but said it was the only way to deliver Brexit. “With no deal, we would have no implementation period, no security cooperation, no guarantees for UK citizens overseas, no certainty for businesses and workers,” she told British members of Parliament (MPs).

The House of Commons will vote Tuesday, and although more MPs have indicated more inclination to support the deal, it is very unlikely that she will enough votes to pass, just 74 days before Britain is supposed to break from its 40-year relationship with the European Union.

What happens if the vote is defeated is anyone’s guess, though legislation was recently passed that requires May to bring an alternative plan within three days to the House of Commons.

Yep dozens of conservative MPs voted against Mays deal today essentially her monstrous ‘deal’ will never see the light of day

    432 against -202 for
A historic and unprecendented defeat that shows the sheer scale of conservative incompetence

Who spent a year and a half arguing behind closed doors about what Brexit even meant without considering what they EU would actually give them and then scrambled to pull a deal out of thin air in the last 6 months

UK is one of the richest countries on earth yet it year on year has increasing inequality. This is fact. Many of the areas who voted to leave were net recipients of EU funding because of their poverty status. Do these people actually realise that Tories do not give a shit about them, never have and never will.

May’s deal has already lost an advisory vote taken today by the Peers

    321 to 152

    321 in favour of rejecting
    152 against rejecting

Theresa May and the Conservatives have no one to Blame but themselves for this whole mess

This could have been much better but for the gigantic incompetence. It’s tough when the chips are down and your leaders fail to rise to the occasion.

There is no meaningful alternative as Labour Government under Jeremy Corbyn would be quite leftist..

Nothing wrong with being “leftist” or as we call it in Europe “Social Democratic”. That said Jeremy Corbyn, though a very decent man, does not possess any leadership quality. Neither does Theresa May for that matter. All that woman has EVER cared about as an MP, a Minister and as Prime Minister is her own career. At least Corbyn has conviction, this woman has none.

This all starts with cluster and ends with a ‘k’! The door is now wide open for Corbyn and his left-wing junta to take over – when that happens we’re really screwed.

      Did I miss the coup?
When did Corbyn take power by force?

Cameron promised the vote to win reelection
Then resigned when he realized his mistake
May wanted to remain in the EU
Then decided she would rather play party politics and attack Corbyn for 2 years instead of trying to get a good deal making him more popular and losing her a snap election
and now she has brought back her hastily negotiated deal that even her own Cabinet doesnt like and somehow Corbyn is the bad guy

You people will stop at nothing to absolve your tribe of blame I will give you that

We all sat back and watched a series of conservative fuck ups and fumbles —– then you have the audacity to blame and attack Corbyn

Cant wait for the new PM

If you give people a vote, then you have to respect the result. Devious people may have their agenda, but why call it democracy if you are not willing to abide by rhe rules?
Are you devious or do you love truth?
No political spin is needed. The good and decent, everyday folk of the UK dutifully followed the democratic process and made their voices heard.
Should we keep voting until you wear us down? I think not.
To all my fellow people out there who love the truth. Keep on keeping on. One truthful person in a room of 100 liars is the true majority.
    May truth reign supreme.

How basic. And arguments used by the right wing extremists in the UK. There is a pattern across the globe of generalist advisory referenda being passed but votes with specific policy proposals being rejected. The current 2019 electorate appears to be against Brexit. Why should those that are 18, 19 and 20 today be denied a voice, via their MPs or a specific vote and instead be bound by the decisions of racist pensioners many of whom are now dead?

My, my, could you be any more patronizing? Remain was supposed win last time, so don’t get your hopes up if there’s a further vote. Lots of people keep their opinions to themselves to avoid being sneered at by your ilk.

Please keep the insulting hyperbole to yourself. ‘Racist pensioners’ indeed. SMH. The MAJORITY voted to leave the crooked EU. That is the truth of the matter, no matter how you choose to spin it.

    • The Constitutional Critic says:

A win by less than 4% in a vote that only half of the populace showed up for
      Not exactly an impregnable mandate
Not to mention the leave campaign made pie in the sky promises, selling all sorts of lies up and down Britain
Polling has shown that the public position has shifted (unless your idea of democracy means one vote per lifetime) I do believe citizens are allowed to change their minds ( Should we also elect MLAs or MPs to life terms in parliament? Of course not)
People are rash, people don’t always vote in their best interests and most importantly people change their minds

Easy solution if you are confident Brexit is what the people want and that a majority are for it let them reaffirm their position by holding a referendum asking if people want:

      A. May’s Deal
      B. To Remain now that they have been presented with the actual options

You along with every other remainer are under no illusions as to what will happen should there be a second vote where persons 16 or older can voice their opinions
The Labour surge in 2017 was evidence enough, the people of the UK don’t really want Brexit, why else would Theresa May have lost her majority before even announcing a deal
Excluding conclusive super-majorities a referendum result only provides a temporary idea of the position of a percentage of the population, a snapshot of current positions subject to change
Not an infinite and unchangeable mandate to be used ad nauseam

You can’t act as if you are respecting the will of the people while ignoring the shift in the people’s opinion

The people did not vote for the complexity of leaving. It was us leavers who were fed lie after lie. Clearly even the government did not realise the full consequences of their actions. I am waiting at a bus stop for a bus going to George Town. I ask the driver is he going to George Town, he says no but you were waiting for a bus so hop on and I will drop you to a place unknown. REALLY!That is the Brexit process.

Getting rid of the coal mining industry plus letting everyone “buy” their own council house. Now we buy coal from Russia at massively inflated rates and the house you “own” goes back to the government for care fees when you get old.

What housing crisis? I’m happily retired in the UK renting an ex-council bungalow now managed by a housing association in a county where there’s no shortage of social housing. Only posting here because my google Brexit alert picked it up. Guess 3:38 and 6:58 are ex-pats living in the Cayman Islands who believe everything the Guardian and the Mirror print.
