Cayman Islands courts

(CNS): Committing a violent stabbing did not cost Duvon Morris (27) any jail time after he was convicted Thursday but it has cost him $8,000 to meet a compensation order for his victim, who was left with some $10,000 in lost earnings and medical expenses after he sustained three stab wounds in March 2017. The court heard that Morris’ victim was stabbed when he tried to stop an altercation outside a George Town bar between Morris and the victim’s cousin. In addition to sustaining two wounds to his leg, he suffered a serious injury to the nerves in his arm, which has left him disabled.

Morris admitted inflicting GBH just days before his trial but the court heard that the incident was out of character and that he had since shown significant remorse.

The judge had arrived at a jail term of more than two years for Morris, but given the time he served on electronic tag and his late guilty plea, it was reduced to 19 months. The judge decided to suspend the remaining jail time for two years after Morris offered all the money he could muster for his victim, who had told the court that he was more concerned with getting his financial losses addressed than how long his attacker went to jail.

Justice Roger Chapple said it was a “finely balanced decision” but the violence perpetrated by Morris appeared to be out of character. He said that, given the genuine remorse and regret Morris had demonstrated as well as offering the not unsubstantial sum by way of compensation, suspending the sentence was appropriate. But he made it clear to Morris that he would go to prison immediately if he committed any other offences over the next two years.

What would be the sentence if he had plead guilty to possession of an Offensive Weapon? Or for threatening to stab someone? My God!!! This is almost as bad as the light sentences for abusing young girls. What is happening in our courts? DPP?

This guy clearly has someone in high powers protecting him. Especially knowing of a known individual in the police force who is close friends with the family. He is an expatriate who is on residency who previously caused a man to lose his leg while he was driving drunk and he didn’t do any jail time and after that he stabbed someone and only pays money to get out. XXXXX Cayman need do better. All they do is protect criminals and jail the lesser crimes.

If this is the same guy and this ridiculous sentence has anything to do with lack of space at our prison then we need to get all the potheads out of there taking up much needed space. Seriously, I would rather a bunch of happy, lazy, munchie eating people out on the street than people carrying knives and driving drunk!!

If we had a 100 million dollar court room, all of this would go away.

Does the DPP Office have Google? How does Errol Reid feel about Morris now?

March 8, 2017: “Duvon Morris was sentenced today for dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident. He was sentenced to 3 months in prison, but will only serve 14 days for the dangerous driving charge as he has a balance that is suspended for two years.

Mr. Morris’s license has been suspended for 18 months due to driving under the influence of alcohol.
And for his third charge of leaving the scene of an accident, Mr. Morris was sentenced to one month that will run concurrent with his first charge.

Mr Morris in 2015 knocked down 61-year-old security guard Errol Reid from his bicycle.
Mr Reid had one of his legs amputated following the incident.”

I count two more months still to go on the previous suspended jail time sentence…how is it possible the DPP, or the prosecution team, or the judge, do not see flagged in their systems of checks and balances, what we’re all capable of Googling?!? Ffs…this is terrible!

Imagine you can stab someone and get off lighter than being found with medical cannabis. Backwardness.

Disabling not 1 but 2 people and this is all he gets?!?!?! Cayman we really need to do better than all this A$$ Backward BS!!! How can you expect to just give him 14 days in jail for the first person he disabled and then just give him an $8000 fine for the second???? Like seriously?!?!?!? Now that’s 2 people who’s disabled and cant do for themselves as they used to…. Two people whose got to depend on friends, family and spouses to help them because of his foolish acts…. Then they think that the punishment he got is ok due to the fact that he’s shown “genuine remorse” and his actions were “out of character”???? Like on the real Cayman….. WAKE THE F@#$ UP!!!!!

You will get more time for accepting a bribe than trying to kill someone. The justice system here is a damn joke!

This judge should be sent home, and the prosecutors should appeal this sentence.

This guy ran over a security guard drunk in 2017 and the guy lost his leg and served 14 days in jail. How can he only get a fine for stabbing somebody 3 times because is “a man of previously good character”????

Out of character? Cause he just happened to be carrying a knife, because that’s what people who have no intention of using one do.

Surely this man should have been incarcerated as well as having to reimburse the victim. This sentence is hardly a deterrent to anyone who goes around vilently stbbing people.

Can someone please confirm whether or not this pos is the same person who crashed drunk into a security guard causing him the loss of a leg and then fled the jurisdiction for a while? WTF are our authorities doing other than taking pay?
