UN urges Caribbean to wake up to sea level rise

| 12/11/2018 | 46 Comments

(CNS): A new campaign has been launched by the United Nations Economic and Social Council to create a climate change survival blueprint for the Caribbean. The effort is being led by Inga Rhonda King, president of the council who is from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the council is set to hold a meeting Tuesday at the UN HQ in New York to to take stock of progress on actions taken in the region. It will focus on commitments made and results achieved to date on small islands and shocks associated with natural hazards, exploring new and innovative approaches to financing climate resilience.

In a video about the meeting King points out that last year, climate-related worldwide disasters caused $320 billion in damage, wiping out decades of development gains in some places. She has also said that the Caribbean’s very existence is at stake.

Article points out a wider range of variance in modeling the actual heat increases above IPCC estimates, but does not at all refute that it’s happening.

Modern people do not realize how we have abruptly added massive manmade EMF’s to our environment.

Here’s the counter argument: Nonsense about the Health Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation

Actually, you’ll find the majority of white people will be fine. It’s mostly people of color that live in areas that will be harmed by climate change. I’m talking about sea levels and the heat index rising. But don’t mind me, I’m just a white person concerned for all humans no matter their skin color or how much they have in the bank.

We’ll be just fine. Climate change is a hoax – with a never ending price tag.
        Wake up.

The Caribbean? With all those religious freaks? They would think it is God’s will. God’s has form on such things. Ask the 900 year-old alcoholic, Noah.

Here’s a science experiment for you all. Fill a cup with water and add ice until the water level is flush with the brim. You will notice that some of the ice is above the water level.

    Let stand.

Even though the ice melted, the cup did not overflow. This is due to ice having a lower molecular density (takes up more space) than water and that the ice submerged in the water was already taking up space.

Science is great. Fearmongering pseudoscienctists with agendas are not. If it can’t be tested, it ain’t science…

Okay smarty… you do know that ice caps aren’t IN water? They melt and run INTO the ocean. That has nothing to do the ice melting in the water already. Glaciers melt and run into the ocean too. Here’s an experiment. Fill up a cup to the brim, then put a cup of ice balanced above in a way that when the ice melts the water will flow into the other cup. There is what is happening.

And people who dismiss science because they don’t understand it are even more dangerous.

Your analogy is semi-relevant, but doesn’t account for the tons of ice stored on land that can melt and flow down through rivers. Also, glaciers can stick hundreds of feet out of the water.

Glaciers around the world, the Greenland ice cover, and the Antarctic ice cover are all receding at an unprecedented pace and are NOT in water, Bobo.

They are on land, and the effects thus far are measurable in terms of sea level rise and decreasing salinity, which affects thermohaline circulation. You, literally, have no idea what you are talking about.

So you dispute historical sea level changes as evidenced in our coastal geology both submerged and visible at the shore. The anomalies in question are commonly known as wave cuts. There are several of these visible but not are beyond scuba depths. These wave cuts show historical sea levels when previous ice ages were in effect.

After that lesson you’ll probably want to re plant your head back in the sand again.

Thermal expansion and continental rebound are other principles you should Google.

There have been at least 5-6 major glaciations and interglacial periods in the last 3-4 Billion years, and four smaller ones, just in last 100,000 years. The Holocene interglacial period, which began 11,650 years ago (after most recent ice age), is accelerating into a new phase, the proposed “Anthropocene Interglaciation” (from 1950 forward). It will create significant changes and severe challenges for a human population on course for 15 Bln, this time measured in just a couple human lifetimes rather than epochs.

Regardless of what this stage will later be called, by those that survive it, there is NO doubt that climate change is never-ending and happening now with a pace unseen in the past geological record (our only basis for comparison). Humans cannot stop what’s unfolding.

During the Eemian Period, which was only 1-2 degrees Celsius warmer than the Holocene average (ie. pretty much where we are now), and just 125,000 years ago, the sea level was 6-9 meters higher than it is now. This is an indelible geological historical fact. The ice melts, the sea levels inexorably rise.

      I’m being sarcastic of course.

We don’t have the right type of equipment installed here to make an accurate estimate. We have ignored the opportunity to collect and trend years of historical sea level and the powers that be seen to like it that way.

The same as it has everywhere else in the world. The sea level has risen by about 6 inches in the past 100 years but it’s predicted to rise by another 10 – 12 in the next 50.
      Cayman will have problems.

Concurrent to climate change deafness, all of our major global fisheries are forecast to collapse within the next 20 years, including extinction of staple fish sustaining Billions now, while global human population simultaneously blooms to 9 Bln by 2040. All the powerful climate change deniers of our day will be dead. Sea levels will be a foot higher and nobody will be disputing dire climate realities, like the desertification of what are now lush tropical zones. I really worry about the selfish legacy we leave to our future generations.

SLR was 1.8±0.5mm/year over the period 1961–1993, by 3.1±0.7mm/year from 1993-2003, and pace has now reached 3.4±0.7mm, or about 80% faster than IPCC model projection of 1.9mm/year. So since 1993, that’s a global ocean rise of about 8.3cm, or 3.25 inches. Co2 is at 409ppm, almost double pre-1950 Holocene average of around 220ppm. Average sea and air temperatures are rising, which creates an irreversible feedback loop accelerating the melt. The fastest pace of sea level rise was 2m/century about 200,000 years ago, when sea levels rose to about 9m above where they are now.
