(CNS) UPDATED: Police have now confirmed that the driver of the silver Mercedes-Benz who was killed Thursday evening in a single-car crash was Peter Oliver Andrew Rankine (46) from East End. The RCIPS also said that the fatal crash happened on Bodden Town Road before the intersection of North Side and Frank Sound Roads, which is in Breakers (not North Side), at around 8:45pm when his car ran off the road and collided with a tree before bursting into flames.

Fire fighters were the first emergency services personnel to arrive at the scene. Rankine, who was alone in the car, was removed from the vehicle and taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The easterly lane of North Side Road was blocked throughout most of the night as an investigation into the crash began.

    Some posters are such hypocrites.
Pass judgement when you have been there.
Who is to say that his car didn’t have a blowout or that some bad driving asshole didn’t run him off.
And cars explode. Face facts, physics happens no matter the make or model. If it were your friend or family member the make or model would be inconsequential.
Some people need to find things to do.
He was a damned good person and died tragically, let him be buried as such.
    Mournfully,
    Greyson Thompson

Very sad news to hear of his passing.
Hope they brought him to Health City (closer) if there was any chance to save his young life.

This is really horrible for the family to deal with. I wish them all the strength and wisdom to continue their for ever changed lives.

For the rest of us, the roads have become saver, since another irresponsible driver is off the roads.

Make bars responsible for drunken drivers.
If you have no sober transportation, you are not getting a drink.

Why are the bars responsible? What about all the people that go to the beach, boating and take their own booze with them?
When I go out and have several drinks, like I’m going to do today and tomorrow, I either leave my car at home and take the bus, then when I want to come home I take a cab.
The problem is that I’m one of the few that do this.
We caymanians are ignorant, proud, we won’t ever leave our car at a bar or friends, we won’t take a taxi or bus, we must drive our cars.

To the family of this man, I am sorry for your loss.

I’ve always heard if you can’t say something good or positive, keep you damn mouth closed!!!! This is something you really should practice with your dumb ass comments!

From what I understand he was swerving from a car that was on the wrong side of the road and crashed. So to the poster who said the roads are saver(sic) is the most irresponsible and ridiculous statement to make when they have no idea what happened. So just stop with the stupid comments!!

    I highly doubt it’s because it was a Mercedes….
Me thinks reckless speed played a part here.
I think about any car will burst to flames if you hit it just right.
Condolences to family and friends, a tragedy for sure.

    Please slow down Cayman!

RIP , and my condolences to his family and friends. But what its about every Mercedes Benz bursting in flames after being involved in a accident . Is this the first Benz that bursted in flames ? How many other kind of vehicles burst into flames after being involved in a accident ?

Good questions, I’d also like to know if it’s a Benz from Japan (deportee)? Many persons are buying these cars soit would be good to know.

Mercedes cars are built in other countries outside Germany , but Japan isn’t one of them. Whether the car was an IBC/SBT or other export , will have no bearing whatsoever on the vehicle surviving the effects of a collision , of any type.

Before every armchair warrier starts leaping into action, you’ll note from the linked article that there were no injuries from these fires. Now I’m not an accident reconstruction expert, however it’s pretty obvious that regardless of the make of the car, if it runs on gasolene and you smash it into a tree at speed rupturing the fuel tank or a fuel line then there is a very good chance that it will catch fire.

I would suggest that people’s time would be better spent looking at the causes of these crashes (speed/tiredness/drink/drugs/lack of attention/using a mobile phone (not that I’m suggesting that any of these had an impact in this case)) rather than blaming the make of the car.

Anonymous 1:35 pm , I agree that we should be looking at other causes . The point that I am making is that I believe that there could be something wrong with the vehicle to why it would burst into flames . I think that most vehicles fuel line are ran from the tank to the engine on the inside of chasis that protect from damage when in an accident . Where is the fuel line located on these Benz that are imported to Cayman islands ? Maybe if the fuel line is attached to the outside of the chassis , then there could be the answer .
