Victim injured in WB violent home invasion

| 20/09/2018 | 58 Comments

Cayman News Service(CNS): Police are on the lookout for two men who committed a violent robbery at a home off Mount Pleasant Road in West Bay last night. At around 10pm on Wednesday a man who was in his yard was approached by two men he did not know. One of the men brandished a handgun and demanded that they go inside the house. Once inside, the culprits hit the man on the head with the handgun and then made off with cash and other personal items. Police said emergency services attended to the man at the scene but he was then transported in a private vehicle to hospital, where he was treated for the head injury and released.

One suspects was about 5’8” with brown skin. He was wearing a dark, long-sleeved shirt and jeans pants. The other man was around about 5’6” with brown skin. He was wearing a black t-shirt and jeans pants.

The matter is under investigation and anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area or has any other information is asked to contact the West Bay Police Station at 949-3999. Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or via the RCIPS website. Tips can also be submitted anonymously via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

lived in the USA in a big city for 19 years. Guns are bad you will get stuck up, shot at and see traffic disputes where people flash they piece. Don’t need that here in Cayman. No where near the USA trust me its petty around here.

Terrible event but why this person and their house? What was special about this location? Please RCIPS, tell us if this event was random or targeted.

…………. so we can distance ourselves from it and feel safe. 🙁

We need real protection or the ability to protect ourselves, not assurances or beliefs of safety.

When my and possibly your ancestors were growing up here, they didn’t fear home invasions, nor walking at night, or, really anything. Yes, times have changed, but what was a constant back then (20-50 years ago, give or take) was that a person or family had the God-given right to protect themselves against all intruders who might seek to steal, assault or worse to/from them.

Of course, years ago, there wasn’t a drug problem on any of the islands, not really. Those that used drugs were left pretty much alone, ostracised from the general population.

So here we all are, helpless and our only protection under the law is to have personal situational awareness. To apply that to this event, we should all remain indoors after dark, and not go outside, no matter what we hear.

Well, that isn’t the way I was raised, and not the way I live. I hear a neighbor screaming and I will be running to their aid, and probably get my ass shot off because I’m not allowed to own any of the firearms that my ancestors considered to be their right to own.

Is this the way we want to live?

CNS is never specific or ever even helpful ever providing locations. Literally a murder on 7 mile one time and it was specified “a bar on West Bay Rd.” And gave only description of the skin color and height like there aren’t a million bars on West Bay Rd. Or people on this island that are 5’9″ with “dark or brown skin”. Well gee CNS, thanks a lot for telling us the bare minimum and not giving people at least a little more info to go on…

CNS: We provide all the information given to us by the RCIPS, which you can check yourself by going to the RCIPS website. On occasion, if we learn more details that we are sure are correct and don’t believe it will impede the investigation, we will add more info. We are not psychic, however, and make every effort to publish the truth and not gossip.

@7:13 Seriously, what you are saying is that you expect CNS to give you the name, date of birth, favorite color, last meal ate, mother’s maiden name and shoe size of these two scumbags. Last time I checked none of the ladies at CNS was named Ms. Cleo. F’n muppet.

CNS, that’s your job as journalists. You need to do more than just check the RCIPS website. You could pick up the phone and call for more specific information or at least the actual spot so people who may have seen something but didn’t think about it would have more information to go by.

I appreciate that you do update your stories but time is of the essence in some of these cases. These updates don’t come in for at least a day or two and by then I already got that info from my group of friends the day before. If I can find out, I’m sure you can too. Just want you to be a better publication is all and a place where we can come for helpful information.

CNS: Firstly, we may have that information your friends sent you but need to verify it before we publish it, which can take time, otherwise it’s called gossip. Of course we try to get more info, of course we get on the phone, but if we can’t verify it we don’t publish, and very often official sources are loath to answer questions.

Secondly, CNS has one – yes, just one – on the ground journalist (just look at this site to see how much work she does) and a total staff of three, and all of us work very long hours. This is not a pity party, I’m just explaining that we have to use our time very carefully, and going to the scene of the crime to gather a few more details is very often something we just don’t have time to do. It’s a time management decision.

We could pander to government, pander to developers and get more advertising dollars to hire more staff, but we choose not to. For example, the tourism ministry is busy buying ads in other publications and radio to advertise the upcoming meeting on the cruise port. For some strange reason they left us off the list, as did the pro-port lobby. We could join the pro-port bandwagon and reap the rewards, but we prefer to publish the truth as we find it.

Again, this isn’t a pity party and I’m not making excuses, this is just the reality of the situation.

CNS I absolutely appreciate your responses, they were well thought out and well written. I read stories from here daily and support your site being here as you cover stories that are not in other publications. I am happy that you realize this constructive criticism and took the time to reply to my concerns. I wish you the best and will continue to read your stories.

@7:55 Spoken like a true idiot. Everyone in Cayman that has been shot, threatened with, injured by in anyway, been caught with one.. ask the person that did it if they bought the gun and brought it into Cayman legally. We have some seriously strict gun laws and people are still being shot and injured and found with guns.

Morons like you don’t get the point that law abiding citizens that own guns do not commit these crimes, criminals do and 99 out of 100 a criminal will not abide by gun laws like you think they will.

There are people in WB with stashes of M-16’s. My best friends aunt’s house was hit by a stray round a few years back and that was reported to the police and verifiable. Do you really think that an assault rifle, and yes I know what an assault rifle is because I served in the US Army, can be legally brought in by the average citizen let alone more than one?

Gun laws handicap law abiding citizens from protecting themselves. If Customs/RCIPS was able to intercept all the illegal weapons before they came into the country then we wouldn’t need guns, and I doubt the average criminal knows how to make a zip gun (improvised firearm).

This is my view on guns, in a perfect world we wouldn’t need to own them no matter how fun they are to shoot but this isn’t a perfect world and the first fool that enters my home at 2 am is going to get 14 9mm rounds in his ass from my Baretta. I say 14 because the 1st round is going to purposely go over his shoulder as a “warning shot” and I don’t care whose son, father or brother he is. F**ker shouldn’t be in my house without my approval at 2 am with my wife, daughter and myself in the first place.

        Let the trolling begin…

Yea, no. I don’t want guns in easy access of regular “law abiding citizens” any time there is a domestic incident or civil dispute. I don’t want more guns to be available to criminals who burgle a home and help themselves to whatever is there. I don’t want someone contemplating suicide to have easy access to one of the more lethal options for following through.

Of course criminals will always find a way to obtain weapons. The point is that it’s not particularly easy for them to do so. Allowing every Tom, Dick and Harry to own a gun will make it TREMENDOUSLY more easy for them to do so, and also cause other problems including the potential for alcohol-fueled disputes that might normally end in fisticuffs or knife wounds to end with shots fired.

People always say “the criminals don’t abide by the laws. They still have guns, we need them too,” but that is the wrong perspective. If the criminals can still manage to obtain guns with this many restrictions in place, imagine how many they would have if the restrictions were more lax!

All your points are right wing NRA propaganda and don’t take into account other countries who have strict gun laws and enjoy far less violent crime. I agree in the USA I would own a gun but here and even Canada I feel it just isn’t necessary. There aren’t enough instances of violent gun crime to justify allowing anyone to arm themselves with weapons that easily take the life of another.

8:43, I understand your point and can see the justification in it by trying to defend your family if it’s a one on one, in which it’s a 50/50 chance because you do not know what the intruder is capable of, but please bear in mind that if you are ever caught in the scenario (God Forbid) to be awakened by 3 or 4 armed men that are probably going to be as high as kites coming into your house there won’t be time for warning shots. – you are pretty much screwed “Unless you are Clint Eastwood”. Especially if they are armed with heavier weapons than your “Beretta” pistol. You start arming the citizens- yes I’m sure some of the criminals will be wounded or killed BUT how many innocent people will be hurt or killed aswell? For every action there is a reaction. If we arm our citizens then the blood bath will begin!

Yes it’s obvious that we have a crime problem here and the police just needs to work harder in getting these scumbags of the street, but at least their not here running up into the schools killing our innocent children and causing massacres all over the place, trust me we live in too much of a small island for things like that to happen, everyone will feel the effects.

There are good and troubled in every country and to generalize and be so critical of the Cayman people that made these islands to what they are today for everyone to enjoy and profit from shows us how ignorant you really are! You are even an embarrassment to your own country! Even in your great big U.S. of A, All of the farmlands and most businesses up there have foreign people working for them. Even a few of your own American countrymen have even said to me that they dont hire locals due to the fact that majority of them are lazy and just waiting for something to happen so they can Sue them! So I would keep quiet on that one. In Addition America and like most countries was founded and made up of immigrants and still is. You obviously came here for a reason? I assume it’s to invest? Why not in your own country? Or will the taxes kill your little retirement plan? Do us a favor and leave us. Cayman does NOT need your type here. People will always rob, assault and try to kill each other, but with easy access to guns it is much easier for death to be the end result

Guns Kill People. – In the USA “Suicides by gun accounted for about six of every 10 firearm deaths in 2010 and just over half of all suicides, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” (Pew Research Center) – It doesn’t matter why you had the gun, or how responsible you are, more guns means more people die whether by suicide or ‘kid picked up gun and pulled trigger’. No guns means fewer deaths. Trying to pin murder rates on certain groups of people doesn’t defend general gun ownership.

Your argument does not imply that people who commit suicide by guns would not find other means if guns were outlawed. But what I find amazing is your simple minded solution to help those who need support to gain back their mental health. Outlawing guns will help those who are disturbed? That is a disturbing and lazy implication in and of itself.

Certain groups cause more crime involving guns which may escalate to others buying guns to defend themselves. Correct the crime problem directly and you will correct the proliferation of guns. London crime has gotten worse, it’s just with knives and acids attacks instead of guns.

5:56pm “and the best one left standing is the winner”! WTF??? That has to be the most ignorant comment ever! What if the last person standing is the criminal leaving an entire family of innocent people including children slain? This is not a video game nor the wild west. Please use your brain before posting such crap.
