Cayman Islands courts, Grand Cayman

(CNS): A local man who was convicted of stealing a jack-hammer from the Cayman Islands Fire Service was employed as a maintenance technician when he stole the equipment and was never a fire officer, officials from the ministry have said. Dwayne Glasgow (54) was dismissed after the theft came to light, officials said. He was caught after he had attempted to pawn the machinery and the fire service was tipped off. After admitting his crime, writing letters of apology and offering to cover the cost, he received a one-month jail term suspended for two years.

The court heard that Glasgow had taken the hammer when he was in severe financial difficulties and at a time when his family was facing a number of challenges, but claimed he had always planned to return it.

So what’s the difference between stealing a jack hammer and stealing from the public purse by not conforming to workplace rules in regard to private business?
Too many civil servants are running their own businesses on government time and using government vehicles to facilitate a private income.
This is fraud and corrupt practice yet no one sees the need to stop a racket that is costing millions in man hours and fuel.
The auditors need to start looking at these people and root them out. They are dirty and deserve to go.

I see the change…many x civil servants coming to court rather than being placed on leave for 2 years. We wanted accountability in the civil service. Well we got it.

A perfect example of what is wrong with the catch-and-release courts. Police actually caught him (well, someone else tipped them off), and the courts just let him go? One month in jail doesn’t seem like much for theft anyway, but a suspended sentence? WTF.

fire service is the usual civil service rats nest of laziness and incompetence…..and there have been many reports to prove it.
