ESO begins work on employment survey

Cayman News Service(CNS): Around 1,500 randomly selected households will be visited by trained interviewers from the Economics and Statistics Office throughout October as the autumn Labour Force Survey (LFS) gets underway on Sunday, 30 September. The twice-yearly survey collects data from residents in the Cayman Islands, both local and foreign, who are employed, unemployed but looking for work, as well as people who are not in the workforce, to determine the unemployment rate and other important factors about the labour market.

The data collected is kept in the strictest confidence, as mandated by the Statistics Law (2016 Revision). Individual data will not be published or used outside the ESO and is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.

The ESO expressed its appreciation to those who have participated in the previous surveys and asked for the public’s continued support.

The last survey in April revealed a drop in unemployment to the lowest rate since 2007. The Spring 2018 Labour Force Survey found the overall unemployment rate was just 3.4%, down from 4.1%  in the Spring of 2017, while the rate for Caymanians fell to 5.3% from 6.2%  in 2017. The figures suggested that 1,118 Caymanians who were looking for jobs were out of work.

For more information on the survey or previous survey results, contact the ESO at 516-3329, 949-0940 or visit the ESO website.

This survey is definitely not random, one of their officers come knocking on my door every time. I advised the lady of that when she came six months ago and she said she would make a note of it. My stats haven’t changed, I am still retired and the educated, ready to work person who shares my home is still looking for a job. Unless you have a job placement for her please do not disturb us again. Thsnk you very much.

This is why Caymanians of certain segments are struggling . You can’t recognize a good thing . You hate the government and can’t survive without it in the same notion.

If you don’t understand the value of this report then don’t complain when legislation is not passed with the people in mind. Don’t complain when no one cares to appreciate the severity of unemployment and in cases CPI tracking, including industry strength etc .

Stay at home in your locked homes pretending you know what’s up ,not wanting to be bothered. In the end the ones in need feel it the most

Tell me then why educated, experienced Caymanians can’t get hired? When you can answer this correctly then I will sit all weekend entertaining them, otherwise do not come my way.

Oh for goodness sake do this online! With home invasions becoming common place I do not answer my door to anyone. Don’t care if you have ID or not or how you are dressed, it is easy to fake.

The know-it-all Cabinet don’t let ESO stats get in the way of their version of events, so who then are we preparing them for?

The reports published are available to the public and business community. In fact someone who wants change might make a point to work with the ESO for the sake of our people

Seriously how difficult could it be to have a national registration of the unemployed?
No one should get any public funded benefit unless they register properly with the appropriate agency responsible for support.
A distinction should be made between the genuinely unemployed and the unemployable, compared to those who just wish to change jobs, careers or employment direction.
Leaving these matters to a survey is ridiculous and wholly unsatisfactory for such relativity small numbers.
It should also be the responsibility of an unemployment support agency to record and track the employment of those who come under their portfolio. That way those who chop and change at whim or who are constantly running foul of workplace rules and expectations are identified and trained appropriately.
    No more free rides.

Why is the ESO doing anyother survey on employment ? Didn’t they get enough information about employment last time 6 months ago , or couldn’t they look at all government information and figure what and who is employed and who isn’t .

But I think this is only for smudgeing numbers for the Administration and being nosey .

Correction to the above comment , another survey .

        • Ron Ebanks says:

ESO , please let us know what you have done for the 1,118 unemployed CAYMANIANS , doing another survey don’t help them get a job , and they have children to school and feed just like you ESO employees .

You need to talk to your MLA , he or she receives a copy of all reports.

What we can do is involve ourselves in this effort . Make note and help the real figures be published

That is a silly notion. The reports published are essential to economic and social progression.

I have worked on their team in the past and can comfirm no one cares what your situation is . Your data is managed with high priority and privacy. The goal is to collect, process and publish with accuracy and integrity.

Relying on their data is dangerous. They do not know how to distinguish a Caymanian from a non Caymanian (relying simply on what they are told) and do not count thousands of foreign condo owners who in effect live here as part of the population.

I don’t care what they do with the data they collect, I don’t want to be bothered after I’ve spent all day at work dealing with people and stupid questions. As a Comment made above M-F 9a-5p, not before, not after abs certainly not on weekends.

Unless you have been apart of these projects you have no idea of the efforts taken to provide privacy and accuracy.

The ESO and it’s team are not the typical ” want to know your business” people.

But this attitude is the type that limits important data that does help.
