Public Beach on Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman

(CNS): Police have been responding to an increase in thefts at some of the Cayman Islands’ most popular beaches over the past two weeks, and the RCIPS is urging people to pay attention to their belongings when enjoying themselves in the ocean. Officers responding to reports have found that the victims were usually in the water when their possessions and cash left on shore were stolen. Most of these thefts have happened along Seven Mile Beach, including Public Beach, Governor’s Beach and Cemetery Beach. There was also one theft reported at Smith Cove last week.

A man, aged 18 from George Town, and a woman, aged 19 from East End, were seen looking into several bags on the beach near the Westin on Thursday, 12 July, and subsequently arrested. They have both been charged with criminal trespass and attempted theft, and appeared in court yesterday, 19 July.

Also on Thursday, a man was seen attempting to place a bag that did not belong to him into the one he was carrying. He was also subsequently arrested. The RCIPS did not say where either of these incidences occurred.

Police said the most recent case occurred on Tuesday afternoon, 17 July, when two people at Governor’s Beach had personal items and some cash stolen from a bag they had left on the shore while swimming.

The RCIPS is strongly advising the public not to leave valuables unattended while at the beach and have someone stay onshore with belongings when others are swimming. For those at the beach alone, police are advising the use of waterproof pouches in which they can places keys, cash and other valuables and take them into the water or to leave them locked and out of sight in their vehicles, if possible.

There’s too much being posted up about how Jamaicans are the problem but I’m pretty sure these are local Caymanians. In fact if you go on Facebook you can see one of them posting up acting all pious and saying to stop treating him like a criminal even though, tada, he’s a criminal.

What about the theft of my view at public beach because all I see are beach chairs! it’s a monstrosity that needs to be stopped. Why can’t these people keep the chairs off the sand behind the cabanas at least 30 feet and only bring in the ones rented? Someone needs to regulate that before every public beach looks like a shitty beach chair graveyard.

Crime wave not start yet wait till summer “wisitors” are getting ready to ago back home? An dem a need a lickle sumting to take a yard yes Cayman we do have our share of local criminals but this criminal dynamic is changing rapidly and certainly has become more vicious and dangerous due to external elements, even law enforcement are complicit and sympathetic nowdays in these criminal situations. I wonder if RCIPS will be checking all those outgoing boxes on CAL?? I doubt it though too busy sorting out parking spots for their fellow countrymen at the departure gate. Poor old Cayman being fleece at every point in this foreign utopia??

  9. Cayman's Dire situation says:

Simple solutions reduce this population and reduce development and significantly reduce the amount of foreign police we have imported here. That will change the foreign demographics here before Cayman suffers a catastrophic criminal situation that will inevitably lead this place turning into their third world type of destination and atmosphere or environment. Where they are thriving and completely overwhelming and controlling. What we are seeing and experiencing now are those very changes before that happens. Finally reduce their political influence by not voting for or providing economic or moral support to those politicians who support and aid or do nothing about this terrible situation.

How much more money $ and equipment are our “useless Gowerment” going to give this foreign police Crime Scam??? Shall it be 20,000 more police from back home now? This article doesnt send a good message does it ? Most hotels have security, public beaches are a soft target. Is it not possible to recruit UNIFORMED community police officers to provide a visible deterrent ? The Cayman Islands rely on returning visitors. Most will read local news and I envisage some will think again before coming back if this continues. You only need a couple stories like this to hit TripAdvisor and that will spell disaster. Its not rocket science. There are about 15 locations to cover for 8 hrs per day, job done. This may cost the public purse but the outlay will reap the reward of increased revenue for local business as tourist confidence returns.

I think that if the Police presence were more often at these beach locations, there would be less crimes happening . I don’t mean uniformed Police officer, the kind that can arrest you wearing shorts and no shirt that look like a tourist . Then these low life scumbags wouldn’t take no chances , but if the Police is wearing that uniform they can be spotted from miles away .

Downward spiral now, this is unacceptable. RCIPS, please come up with a real solution. Who can swim while holding on to plastic bags? How about doing your jobs and patrol or is it too hot for you? You are destroying our tourism product if your solution is for our guests to swim holding on to their belongings. They can go to Jamaica for that kind of experience. You would know that.

Ignorance is bliss, especially for the keyboard warriors here on cns who just sits behind a computer/phone screen all day and comments BS about something you all know nothing about.
FYI, the beach vendors are all legal and license to operate on crown property just the same as all the hotels and condos along 7mile beach whose staff also operates on crown property whether it be watersports or chair rentals, plus they provide a sense of security for tourists when visiting the public beach, how do you think the thief on Thursday the 12th of July was apprehended if it wasn’t for the same beach vendor who was being accused of being on island illegally,he courageously put his own life in danger to help a total stranger just to keep up the good name for the caymanian people, and that this criminal was of a foreign nationality and not a child out of school for the summer.
You see empty balloons like most of you are all inclined to believe anything the media tells you because you all are stuck in your little bubble thinking that our culture here is the same as whatever shithole country you’ve spawned from. To me the vendors do alot more for this island than the keyboard warriors who only post meaningless comments and don’t get off their asses to do nothing productive for this island, and if every beach on Cayman had vendors there wouldn’t be any thief to report about because we as caymanians know that we don’t shit where we eat, not like some of you that are only use to eating shit.

1:26 pm , tell us about how many people that you helped get arrested , and how many tourist that you helped without charging . And the good security you give to people on the beach by being a vendor. You should be able to give at least 3 .

There have been numerous times that the vendors have stopped criminal activities on PB, even restrained and held a thief for 30mins until the police arrived, yes there are a few bad seeds that come about and make things look bad for us all, but they have nothing to do with the vendors,we are only there (legally)to provide a service for the tourist and not allowing them to succumb to any pressure, there have been countless of times that I have recovered lost valuables such as wedding rings, jewellery, money, etc, without any charge or fee even when attempting to reward me out of gratitude, I have rescued people from drowning on a daily basis just from them venturing out too far from shore, because there are no life guards stationed on the 7miles of beach, and most of the vendors are trained and certified in CPR,(I know I am),FYI royal palms beach charges their patrons a fee before they even get to see the beach and they are also operating on crown property with jet ski and chair rentals, but nothing is said about that, huh. Honestly I don’t know how PB would run with out us vendors over seeing some form of order when it comes to some of these unruly cruise ship passengers, there would probably be a few casualties every week, just from drownings alone. Anyways Mr West Bay Premier/keyboard warrior maybe you should take a day off from behind your computer screen and join us on the PB(when there are about 5ships in port)and observe for yourself who the REAL warriors are,or are you already obesed and just can’t be bothered.

Like I said before, ignorance is bliss and what you all fail to understand is that we the caymanian people are kind and nice to people(always have been) and we don’t seek recognition in doing so,and if you even had a grain of common sense then you can see where all of the drowning related deaths are located,(surly not at the PB)but where the problem lies with most of you people is that you all take our kindness for weakness, waking up every day not saying good morning to your peers, probably don’t even brush your teeth that’s why, I’ve said it before we are all legal and license to operate on PB and if we wasn’t then we would not be there, and if it seems to be an eye soar for you then you can go back to whatever
Shithole country you drifted from, or maybe the stench there is too unbearable for you to stand, welcome to PARADISE.
