Elderly taxi driver admits killing doctor

(CNS): A 70-year-old man from Bodden Town has admitted causing the death of Dr Vary Jones-Leslie (62), from Jamaica, as a result of dangerous driving. Roy Clivey Tamasa pleaded guilty to the charges against him ahead of a scheduled trial, after denying the allegations earlier this year. On 17 July  last year, Tamasa hit the visiting physician while driving his taxi just after she left Owen Roberts Airport and was crossing the road between the airport and a car rental business.

Following Tamasa’s eleventh hour plea, thereby averting the planned trial, he was bailed to await a social inquiry and other reports ahead of a sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for September.

Was he not arrested for drinking under the influence at the time of the accident?

It is all too common for defendants here to plead guilty at the last moment after so much time has been taken by everyone to prepare for trial. They are all after the 25% discount on the sentence and in cases like this I suggest the law be amended so the discount can be reduced by 50%.

Say it like it isn’t? I’m afraid you’re wrong on both counts.

There’s a 1/3 discount for an early guilty plea. It reduces to 10% for a very late plea like this one.

Only guilty man on island. Owning up Is being a man. The rest of the roads around here should take a page from his book.

Hardly. By his cowardly conduct it is more likely that he hoped to get away with his criminal killing but realised the evidence was overwhelming and pleaded to cut sentencing as the selfish do. Quite a common attitude. Not a man at all.

    11th hour plea. So cowardly.

This was such a sad and tragic event. Whilst I am saddened for the family of the Doctor, I simply must say this was the result careless and reckless driving. Not of an elderly driver, that should have been the headline, as such a heading would have alerted all of us to be especially careful whenever we are driving near our ever expanding congested areas.

In the US this would be called “vehicular homicide”.

So the government licenses 70 yr old taxi drivers but won’t license an Uber like service for Cayman? That is everything you need to understand how our government works.

Please no one, piss no one off.

How did he think he could get away with denying that?

This entire incident is so sad. Two very special people, one gone and the other will never be the same again. Prayers for everyone.

I don’t think he felt he was going to get away with it but (I’m guessing), he feels he didn’t kill her intentionally maybe that’s why he said not guilty earlier.

Im so sorry for this gentleman. Also sorry for the family of the deceased. However this man is one of the nicer of most Jamaicans that came to these shores. Not only being a dedicated Christian and husband but he is ever so kind to all. I know that this death must have caused him much pain. One has to know him to have so much empathy. This truly had to be an accident.

I’m thinking the only way would be if he said she bolted out in front of him. Being 62 and walking with a roller bag/luggage, I kind of doubt she did any bolting.
