Security guard robbed outside GT bank

| 09/06/2018 | 59 Comments

(CNS): Armed robbers made off with two bags of cash in the very early morning hours Saturday, after robbing a security guard outside Cayman National bank on Elgin Avenue in George Town. Just before 12:30am (9 June), the two masked robbers, armed with guns, reportedly fired a single gunshot and smashed the windscreen of the vehicle that was used by the security employee who was delivering the cash to the bank’s cash deposit box from a local business.

Police said no arrests have been made yet and officers are now investigating the armed robbery and urging anyone with information to come forward.

The public can call the George Town Police Station at 949-4222 or anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or www.rcips.ky/submit-a-tip. Tips can also be submitted via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

We need a quota system in the police dept. we have too many from one country . We need to mix it up with other Caribbean islands, USA and Canada. Trust me it will make a difference. The same goes for Security companies.

How are this company /business going to recoup the money from the security company ? If they can’t get the money back , then what is the use of having the security company take your money to deposit it . You might as well take the money to the bank yourself along with some friends and piece metal .

Guessing once the cash is collected by the security guard it’s insured. Otherwise as you say – why bother.

@1:58 pm has an interesting point of view.

Gerontocracy is a worldwide problem nobody wants to talk about.

Just see what is happening in the US.
“..80-year-old John McCain rallied from surgery and a diagnosis of brain cancer to cast a 1 am vote that torpedoed Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare”.

“The Affordable Care Act passed in the first place because 92-year-old Sen. Robert Byrd was wheeled out onto the Senate floor for three vital votes in 2009.”

They also have the geriatric Supreme Court.

Over age 70, almost one-fifth of adults experience some mild cognitive impairment.

But this is not only about mental acuity of politicians, local or worldwide.

1:58 is absolutely correct, saying “The current generation in charge grew up in a different place, frankly, in almost every way, and they aren’t capable of it.”

Let me add, as an example, that quantum mechanics not only superseded Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity, but also unleashed a new way of looking at physics. Yet, older generation of scientists and lay people alike, are unable to grasp, recognize and accept the change. “..they aren’t capable of it”

P.S. The same actually goes elsewhere. Doctors and career biologists are usually wedded to chemistry in the 17 century fashion. Their entire concept of life processes is a chemical one. They call it biochemistry. Even mental and psychological phenomena regarded by many doctors as mostly, if not totally, attributable to chemistry. Even well known electromagnetic properties of human physiology are largely ignored, unrecognized an unused by most physicians. Hence, they prescribe chemical treatments(drugs) to all manner of disease almost exclusively!!!!!!!!

For several years now I have noticed crime is happening more frenquent and the types of crime are becoming more and more serious. Just this week, I’ve read, a professer sentenced for child pornography, man murdered in north side, gang rape in Savannah and a home invasion in George Town. I would like the politicians, the DG and the Governor to get this problem under control and stop wasting resources on seat belts, coupons, etc…should these serious crimes not be brought under some sort of control very soon, cayman will become the new Wild West with the exception that law abiding citizens and businesses will be all sitting ducks.

The more of this crime there is, sadly, the closer we will get to being able to influence what is done about it. The UK has an appalling history of colonising peoples and allowing law and order to break down or even making it do so, in order to ensure that when those peoples go independent, things get worse, and there will forever be a debate about whether they would have been better off still with the UK. We have to avoid that here somehow. The current generation in charge grew up in a different place, frankly, in almost every way, and they aren’t capable of it. It will take my generation now beginning to rise in society, with exposure to the outside world, overseas education, and the absolute refusal to tolerate the current economic and social conditions, to clean this place up.

Same place bro. Half of America is “imported” as you put it. Gun an knife crime in Cayman was practically non existent 25 years ago, now we hear of it on a weekly basis. If anyone has lost originality it is Cayman. Some of the stock exchange cash should fund getting these young people on side and give them jobs, activities and social inclusion and the power of God.
Isolate the young and there will be danger ahead.
        That is certain.

I agree with you 7:07 we do have an armed response unit, but in essence we still have an unarmed police service. Lucky we have criminals that just want to take the money and run. Cayman crime could be brought under control unfortunately the commissioner and our government aren’t the right people for the job. And they have had enough time on the toilet seat to have done something. All of their positions are stressful jobs unless one has the best interest of the people at heart and they are not just there for the money. They could all make a difference from the governor on down.

Would help if you read and understand the story. CNB was NOT robbed. A security guard from a business was depositng cash to the bank at early hours of the morning on behalf of that business. He was robbed and the business’ cash stolen.

In this case, it was not the bank that got robbed. It was a cash drop being done on behalf of a business. So it’s the business that got robbed. But what is the point of having unarmoured, armoured vehicles and security guards without anything to defend themselves or their cargo?

I accept cheques from no one anymore. Did a ‘favour’ for a friend who wrote me a $10 cheque in reimbursement – bank wanted $10 to cash it! Unarmed robbery is what that is called! I deal with NO BANKS anymore and keep all my cash in a floor safe under a tile. OK thieves, guess which tile!

      • Fred the Piemaker says:

Suspect you will tell them which tile when they put a gun to your head. These animals are happy to shoot security gads carrying cash (the previous case, not this one) – what makes you think your cash is safe under your floor?

      • Anonymous says:

The US$10 charge is for an cashing an international bank cheque – it’s $1 for a local cheque. Any idea how much staff time is involved in clearing an overseas cheque? The bank makes very little on that $10.

  26. SecureCayNow says:

Seems as if the robbers just dicided at the last minute not to give up their guns in the gun amnesty. Was so close, just 200m. Let’s not even suggest inside work with the rat watching the cheese.

Anyway, Cayman crime is still relatively low. Nobody says they not going mall shopping in Florida because downtown MIA crime is high.

The issue is, zero crime will not justify an expert EU Commisioiner who comes here to learn.

After the Fosters Airport incident, why don’t we have armed police escorts when there is money transportation or allow the guards to be armed to the teeth? Is it weighing between a shootout and robbers getting waxed and them getting away with cash and no casualties?

I guess until we hear 2 security guards dead, no drastic steps will be taken.
