Garbage collection troubles continue

garbage collection failures on Grand Cayman(CNS): Department of Environmental Health officials have apologised yet again for garbage collection problems. This time the areas affected are in George Town and include Windsor Park, Banana Walk, Grand Harbour and Prospect Drive. Pick-up is scheduled to resume in these areas tomorrow (Thursday). In other areas of the capital where there have been sustained delays in garbage collection, the DEH said that this should resume today (Wednesday).

These areas are Shadow Lane, Wahoo Lane, Brinkley Road, Casper Walk, Merrendale, Short Lane, Webb Road to inside Seymour Drive, Bramble Road to Andresen Drive, South Church Street, Walker’s Road and Denham Thompson Way.

The latest problems in the collection schedule come as Jennifer Ahearn, the chief officer in the ministry responsible for the department, is facing potential charges of contempt over allegations that she misled the Public Accounts Committee.

Meanwhile, DEH Director Roydell Carter has been on enforced leave for mysterious reasons for more than six months. Government officials have failed to explain his absence to the public, even though it is believed that the public purse is still paying Carter’s full salary and benefits.

In a release about the problems relating to the George Town garbage collections, the DEH apologised to residents in the affected areas.

Officials urged anyone whose garbage has still not been collected to call the department office at 949-6696 or by emailing dehcustomercomplaints@gov.ky

According to Minister John-John some months ago that the landfill would “soon” be accepting derelict vehicles. Hon. Minister, when is “soon”? No updates, no solutions, no accountability and no one in Gov’t has a problem with that!!??

Why don’t we just fire these garbage collectors that are calling in sick every day?..We can then lease the trucks to private firms and let them do the collection..This is ridiculous that this has been going on for so long…

We cannot continue to be held hostage.

You try working for DOE, wake up 3 in the morning, lifting more than 50 pounds of bags, before you judge these dump collectors!!!

These guys are not robots. I can tell you they work hard. And working at the dump, of course you will get sick! I think the real problem is management, lack of funding from goveenment, lack of trucks and staff … thats the problem.

It’s all political. Politicians want to privatize the garbage collection, so anybody in the way will be put on leave. In order to further get the public ready for the move.
Fees will double after privatizing and some ex politician will take the money.
    What a dumb island….

Looks like a third world country. I called the DOE about removing old cars from property and they say I would have to get the private sector involved as government is not excepting any at this time…….what a mess Cayman do better.

Not only is this an eyesore, but this can lead to some serious health issue sooner or later. Government please don’t wait until there’s an outbreak to address this situation.

Turn over the skip rental & emptying to the private sector – let competition flourish.
DoEH can focus solely on household collection.

What is the CO doing about this??!!! As the head of the Ministry, she is the one that signed the Ownership Agreements with the Minister, to deliver the outputs of the Government!!!

Is it an operational issue, a technical issue….what is it???

This is downright ridiculous. If you can’t manage your ship, do the crew a favor and step aside for someone else!!!
