CNS readers vote Eden most ‘useless’ MLA

MLA Anthony Eden

(CNS): A readers’ survey by CNS on the performance of all 19 of the current Members of the Legislative Assembly found that veteran politician and the opposition member for Savannah, Anthony Eden, is the most useless MLA. Asked to grade the job of current representatives from useless to excellent, well over half of the more than 400 readers who took part graded Eden as useless and just 8% thought he has done an excellent job. But although the oldest member of the House was given the clearest of thumbs down, with just over three out of ten points, when it comes to excellence readers took a dim view of the entire legislature.

The results of the survey put Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell, the minister of tourism and the PPM representative for Cayman Brac West and Little Cayman, on top, scoring the lowest amount of useless votes and securing the greatest number of excellent votes. But even the most popular member only managed just over 6 out of 10, and just over 27% of those who took part considered his performance excellent while almost 17.5% still thought he was ‘useless’.

While the premier scored better than might be expected, it was far from a ringing endorsement for his performance. Of the 375 who opted to rate Alden McLaughlin, the immigration minister and PPM representative for Red Bay, almost 21% said he was useless, while 24% voted excellent with the rest somewhere in between, giving him an overall average score of 5.4 out of 10.

CDP Leader and Speaker of the House McKeeva Bush, who represents West Bay West, also fell well short of a thumbs up for his efforts over the last year. More than 40% of the 387 survey participants who rated Bush graded his performance as useless, while just over 21% felt he was doing an excellent job.

Despite the government’s lackluster performance, with Capt Eugene Ebanks, the CDP member for West Bay Central, who sits on the Unity government’s back-bench, scoring almost as badly as Eden with just two fewer ‘useless’ votes, the opposition as a whole did quite badly too.

Opposition Leader Ezzard Miller (North Side) did the best of all of those on the opposition benches, scoring 4.1 out of ten, with a useless rating of just under 38% and just 47 excellent votes.

When it comes to the House novices, David Wight, the PPM back-bench member for George Town West, was the most popular. Attracting 78 excellent votes and 84 useless votes, the newcomer fared better than many of the experienced members, with an average of 5.1 out of ten. However, Kenneth Bryan, the member for George Town Central, got the novice wooden spoon with just 47 excellent votes, while 166 of the 395 people who rated the youngest member of the House opted for a useless grade.

Despite being totally unscientific and merely a snapshot of how CNS readers felt about their local politicians one year into this administration, it may well serve as a moment of encouragement for the MLAs to improve their standing over the next three years.

Everyone please note from an informed Internet source:

“Self-selection bias is the problem that very often results when survey respondents are allowed to decide entirely for themselves whether or not they want to participate in a survey. To the extent that respondents’ propensity for participating in the study is correlated with the substantive topic the researchers are trying to study, there will be self-selection bias in the resulting data. In most instances, self-selection will lead to biased data, as the respondents who choose to participate will not well represent the entire target population.

“A key objective of doing surveys is to measure empirical regularities in a population by sampling a much smaller number of entities that represent the whole target population.”

CNS. Love your website. But this “article” smacks of low grade trash tabloid journalism. Proof in support for my assertion is in the tone of the comments. The survey is completely unreliable and you know it. Stick with the news please and stop trying to create it.

P.S. not a fan of Eden or most of the other politicians but this is still wrong.

CNS’ editor and or readers can dislike Anthony Eden for his stance on gay marriage all day long – but to denigrate his legacy as “useless” speaks more to a significant ignorance of the gentleman and his contribution to our society than any semblance of an accurate description thereof.

All is fair in politics. It’s one thing to be against gay marriage and LGBT rights. It’s another thing entirely to get on a soap box and use the type of rhetoric he used that alienated many people including members of his own party when he spoke. For a distinguished politician to use such incendiary rhetoric is disgusting and a public disgrace. He has done his part and it is now time for him to step down and let the younger generation take Cayman forward into the future. And before anyone says anything, I come ya by pain na by plane.

To call a person useless is demeaning, insulting and borders abuse. Mr. Eden has served this country without issue for decades, until he expressed his ant-homosexual views and openly promoted his thoughts and Christian values. The fact that he does not accept men on men having sexual intercourse orally or anally was applauded and booed. It depended on what side of the fence you were on. He as the Gays have a right to have an opinion. He has a right to what his vision is for his commnuity. To call him useless when so many seated members have not nor will they ever serve nor accomplish what this great man has done. He should be Priemier after Alden does not seek re-election, whenever that may be. Great men are noticed because they do not bend over for everyone that makes noise…..Mr. Eden will never bend over, and we are witness to a great Caymainian man. We need more leaders like him…..integrity, honesty, intelligence!

Its foolish to say he isn’t prepared to serve all human beings! He is prepared to serve his constituents. He is just not willing to agree to certain changes in the law and as far as we know the majority agree with him which is evidenced by his being returned to his position. There is a reason why gay people are called minorities they cant or shouldn’t except in exceptional cirucmstances change the vote on a policy or legislation if the majority disagree. Like it or not. Perhaps you need a different argument.

Your views and your values might not be the same as your neighbors. so how do you fairly decide. It simply cannot be that at the whim of a few, the few rule the majority .

It is interesting that you highlighted male homosexuality in your comment and not female homosexuality; surely it isn’t just men that engage in that behavior, unless you and Mr. Eden don’t see female homosexuality as a problem (hypocrisy much?). What you seem to forget is that Mr. Eden, while he is in office, doesn’t just speak for himself, he speaks for his entire constituency. There are a number of gay people in his constituency whom he failed that day when he got on his soap box.

So to talk about “demeaning, insulting and border[ing] abuse” is laughable for at least two reasons:

1.) he demeaned, insulted and verbally abused his own citizens for the sake of gaining/retaining his dying breed of religious voters. So, to use a colloquialism, “da wha ya get!”

2.) Politics is a dirty game! Everyone and their mother knows that! Would you like us to provide him a blanket (as well as you for that matter) while he sits in the corner rocking back and forth sucking his thumb? If he can’t take something as “abusive” as a poll naming him the most useless MLA, then that’s all the more reason for him to step down. If you can’t take the heat, come out the kitchen.

Not really. He is not compelled to serve everyone. You do not have to vote for him. He serves his voting people. Again he need not bend over for every homosexual that rattles on their right to confornicate openly. He is not required nor should he get on his knees beaneath Homosexuals begging for their forgiveness nor should they beg for his acceaptance. The Gays preach acceptance but do not accept his right to his own values and intellect. Two way road it is! His values hold steady and true to our Lord and Jesus Christ. No apologies needed. No should demeaning terms as useless be appplied to this great representation of a man. Man not need to lay with Man. People want to punish Mr. Eden for taking a stance. I champion not his actual stance but his courage to stand up and be counted and not waiver from public outcry. I salute you Mr. Eden and many others do too!

The reality is, of course, that if you became a New Zealand citizen (after 5 years residence and at a cost of NZ$470), you ARE entitled both to vote and to stand for office. You can then also, as a Commonwealth citizen, move to the UK and vote in UK elections once you have been resident there for a year. If you then get indefinite leave to remain in the UK (e.g. by marrying a British citizen), you can stand for office – you don’t have to be British to run in a UK election.

Mr. Eden is a man of high morals and has a solid die hard block of voters. We do not need any useless survey to tell us who has our best interest at heart. He did not need to campaign to get in the house. All he needed was to have his name on the ballot paper. He is not guided by some party, but by his belief in God and good old fashion common sense which is not so common these days. If he was a YES man who supported every thing that has the potential to destroy our country then he would be the most popular man in the assembly. We need men like Mr. Eden who will stand up for what is right.

Mr. Eden will never be unseated by his constituents because we begged him to stay when he told the public he would not seek re-election.

We want him there for us.

Obviously the people who voted in this survey didn’t vote in Mr. Eden’s district, and the only vote that matters is from those who can continue to return Mr. Eden back again and again, which is what we did and will continue to do.

So this survey was just as “useless” as the fox who wanted the grapes so badly and couldn’t reach them, but then afterwards cussed those same grapes he so desperately wanted.

We can tell who voted in this useless survey and it matters not in our voting precinct.

In my opinion living in the same district as Mr Eden the man is always a helping hand to anyone in need you can clearly see this by persons who show up to his home asking for help the man is a kind heart individual and is always lending a hand where he can.

He was retired and we the people re-elected him back. He must be doing something good for the people.

Using his image is so not cool when most of them are called useless, that word should’ve even be on the poll to describe anyone of the MLA’s clearly people have there people whom they support.

A lot of elderly persons support Mr Eden and I’m sure not even close to half of them got the chance to vote on this poll.

This is a very biased poll. Most of those politicians highly rated as useless are actually very useful. It’s just that they ways in which they are useful are not good.

I 100% agree that Mr. Moses Kirkconnell has been the most productive MLA with the opportunity given to him by the people…hats off to him! And I hope he continues on that path…..

But as for the rest I will not necessarily say any of them are “useless” as they all have their good and bad qualities and at times whether it was in the past or now tried to make a difference somewhere in the community. BUT what I will say is USELESS is the “title” of Premier, the bickering back & forth tantrums, this one don’t want to work with this one, being YES MEN, being elected to just collect a paycheck, fading into the back bench, not getting a grip on government departments going AWOL lately etc, etc, etc.

Our people are loosing their homes, unemployment is still badly plaguing the people, families barley getting by to feed children/themselves or afford bills and no one will ever know how that feels until you go through it yourself. The people see you as USELESS because your fat paycheck was secured by their vote while their harsh realities remain in limbo from your false promises.

Ref Anonymous says: 10.19 am 07/06/2018, What the hell has MLA’s uselessness have to do with someone losing their house? Get real moron, If you have a mortgage and can’t afford it, then should you not do something about it yourself? or is it the right thing to do and just put the blame on someone else? How is that problem related to the MLA’s not being equipped to do their job and not being able to be switched on? Most people lose their house because they drink 2 six packs of beer daily and smoke 1 or 2 packs of cigarettes a day, or have more than one woman they are keeping, or they like to steal and tell so much lies they can’t be trusted with a simple job.

But I am glad Anthony Eden is alive, I thought to hell for sure he was dead. I hope he is now safely out of the coma and will make a full recovery!

Sadly political power attracts those who should be denied it This Unity govt is living proof of that Cayman. Unwise or bad political decisions at the polls bring disastrous outcomes and dire consequences for both those who made those decisions and those who voted against them that’s the really sad part. Poor Cayman

I am glad you assessed your survey as “unscientific.” There is something called reliability and validity of survey findings. And a lot of that depends on the nature of the sampling.

I suspect that the responders are very similar in profile to those who are often referred to as the “haters,” rendering your findings entirely unreliable.

When you vote for those who have done or accomplish nothing in their own lives and constantly tell you nothing or what you want to here to get elected. Why are you expected them to do something. When you have a cabal of the non elected failures and corrupt principals from elsewhere make decision for those who vote them and their political pariahs out you get the representatives you deserve. As for Mr Wight tell us what exactly has he done to deserve 47 votes and if you can’t answer that read the post over again and see which line applies.

It’s difficult when you know things that take place behind the scenes but you cannot openly speak up because there are consequences.

Mr. Eden is still working, he still supports his community. Just ask the people who turn up at his home every single day asking for help. I know because I live in that community and I see it, day in and day out. He, with the other members of the opposition constantly fight the battle against the government where they disagree but they aren’t power, they cannot overrule a decision the government makes. CNS when you do these polls you cannot assume people even have the proper criteria for voting – they are voting based on who is making the most noise but noise doesn’t equal action.

No not so much about marriage, perhaps his homophobic tyraids and general hate speech against gay people. He should have been warned about inciting violence. Leadership is not just about your own convictions but that of those whom he serve. Case in point our current governor who is Muslim but serving a prominently Christian community. Mr. Eden had my respect. He lost it when he thought it was ok to make people feel less than. I’m talking Caymanians here.

Perhaps you could endow us with the long list of his legislative accomplishments? He is an MLA not your best friend or your fixer. People shouldn’t have to turn to anecdotal evidence to back up a legislator who’s record should be clear for the public to see. Your reliance on anecdotal evidence rather than pointing to his voting record, arguments in the LA or legislative contributions proves the very point his detractors are making, he hasn’t done anything of value. Unless of course calling the LGBTQ community “evil” and then claiming he is the one being attacked is something of value to Cayman, (is that really all it takes to get a cushy job with a 100k+ salary and benefits here, cause I might just join in for the economic stability)
Take a second to think this is a man who at least implied he would be stepping down and then changed his mind to “defend christian values”. This is a man who refused to debate his competitors in the 2017 election and did the bare minimum in terms of campaigning. I am a former resident of the Savannah/Newlands area and I can assure I never saw or heard from him once even though up until OMOV I was technically one of his constituents

You can spin whatever delusions of grandeur you like, half of the time if you tune into legislative sessions you will see him either on his phone or nodding off in the back
A waste of space in the LA and a man elected purely by virtue of incumbency, who should be in the pines with his cohorts

Diogenes, in the 1990s he worked brilliantly as a Minister of health with two excellent civil servants he poached from the Education department which was so dreadful..failed primary school people promoted to big jobs they could not handle…. no one of quality wanted to work there. He established the new hospital after a terrible political mess stirred up by Ezzard who had been tossed out in the election of 1992. I spoke to a civil servant recently who worked with him in those days and she said he had none of the biblical nonsense and certainly none of the gay bashing hatred he is now famous for. She believes someone in his extended family…and there are gays in it as everyone knows… must have made some inappropriate move on a family member that drove him stupid.
