Overturned bus on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway

(CNS): A bus driver and one of his passengers escaped with just minor injuries following a major collision on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway yesterday evening. At around 5pm Tuesday (8 May) the police were called to the crash just south of the Seven Mile Public Beach roundabout. A white Honda CR-V and a grey and yellow Toyota HiAce local bus collided in the southbound section of the highway. The bus overturned and the CR-V sustained damage to its front section.

The bus driver and injured passenger were taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where they were treated and released. The matter is now under investigation by the traffic unit.

No law enforcement means no training means no change means watch out for the buses and taxies as they park in the road and cut you off getting back into traffic. If only they would ticket them and get them to follow the laws. But no

Just other evening on my way home from work I crossed one of these busses on-boarding passengers by the Kimpton headed to West Bay. I was driving 44 and the bus passed me at Discovery Point condos with oncoming traffic and lots of passengers! Crazy!

Just a matter of time before a major disaster.

BTW, the CRV continued down the road a good way, probably watching the bus flip in their rearview mirror. Distracted by this, they then leapt the curbing and crumpling headlong into a palm tree on the Governor’s Road embankment. Car was a write-off with the airbag deployed. That one was more bewildering than the flipped bus! #talent

Or went too fast on roundabout…these bus drivers are chasing people fast as possible to earn more money!

Bus and taxi drivers are without doubt the worst drivers on the road. Have no regard for other road users whatsoever.

….Or their passengers! Who btw, don’t usually pay until they disembark….they are just crazy, money greedy drivers!!!

I’m willing to bet that the bus was on the outside lane, trying to exit the roundabout, and the CR-V was on the inside lane, staying on the bypass.
Not sure why people find it soooo difficult to use the roundabouts. They even started putting arrows on the lanes to tell you what your lane can do, and people still get it wrong.

Indicamators – wah deh is? Might as well get rid of all road markings and signs. 50% of drivers ingnore them anyway and that includes RCIPS. Pure anarchy reins on our roads and roundabouts are more dangerous than the Daytona 500 circuit.
How these idiots get a licence is beyond comprehension. The little things ignored by police for years have now graduated into wholesale blatant disregard for road rules, other drivers and pedestrians.
At least we have a tried and tested method of population control which seems to be working.

As long as there is a culture in the RCIPS of earning revenue from speeding tickets, things will never change. RCIPS is asking to have legislation changed to be able to charge more for speeding infractions (currently at $20/ mph over the limit). A blind man can see this is only to raise revenue while not having to depend on enforcing the other traffic violations that legislation does not allow them to fine civilians exuberant amounts. You will never see them ticket for failure to indicate or using a round about incorrectly. You will never see them pull public buses over from cutting into traffic. You will never see them pull over these tour buses for talking on a mic to passengers while driving (is that not equally distracting as using a phone?). The RCIPS is not concerned about making the roads safer for us to commute. I mean, we literally had to beg for the traffic department o be re-instated. Now that it finally is, all they have done is issue speeding tickets while the rest of the traffic infractions go unenforced. Seems to me they are only putting on a show and these officers deserve acting awards and nothing more.

True, but these two accidents were on an arrow-straight and level section of southbound ETH, about mid-way between SMB Public beach and Krys roundabouts. No roundabouts at all in this situation. The CRV leapt the curbing 100’s of yards clear of rolled taxi and crashed headlong into a palm.

And I’m willing to bet that the drivers don’t know which is which when it comes to inside and outside lanes. I know at least one person who thinks they are the other way round (i.e. the inside lane’s the one running alongside the meridian…) so there are probably many others. Time for the police to seriously think about educating the drivers here. Maybe some public announcements.

    • Spokentruth says:

Because most are selfish drivers, who are going too fast, don’t use their indicators, so they will not notice or understand when one is used!!

I bet that bus is already back on the road.

I’ve been driving 25 accident-free years, and I cannot figure out how people do such stupid things. Indicate, anticipate and keep checking your mirrors. It really isn’t difficult ffs.

The bus drivers in Cayman have not got a clue about road safety and show disregard to their passengers. All drivers in Cayman should be subject to rigorous driving instructions before being granted a license and this is particularly important when carrying multiple passengers. Why is it possible to drive with blacked out windows, without a license, without wearing seat belts, with cars that are unfit for road use and with absolutely no clue how to use roundabouts. Add to that the widespread use of mobile phones and you have a lethal cocktail.

I try to go to sleep when I get the buses from Savannah-GT (and vice versa) because they are driven by f**king mad-men willing to kill everyone onboard for $2 a pop just so they can get to the next person standing on the side of the road. One of these days all 15-20 passengers are going to be killed and only then will the RCIPS and Govt. wake the f**k up.

Not surprising, a few days before this a honda civic implanted itself into the Cost u Less roundabout, it is a free for all out there. I now stay off the roads after dark unless absolutely necessary.

I hear that. I’m pregnant so I’m the DD these days and the crap I see out there when driving people home from dinners is insane. Almost all the people swerve in and out of there lanes. Cops just need to patrol and this could be solved. Well, that and taxis need a good overhaul with the actual highway robbery they charge.

This type of accident is an epidemic in Jamaica. Before moving to Cayman, I recall there being a Government campaign to try and stomp out the poor driving habits of the bus drivers.

I stopped taking them years before that.

    Old habits die hard.

So good to hear that it was a “local” bus and not an “international” bus in the crash on the ET highway.
