Port scandal might be under police probe

| 10/05/2018 | 28 Comments

(CNS): The revelations this week of various scandals at the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands (PACI), including questionable recruitment process, the mismanagement of finances and unauthorised spending, may also be the subject of a police investigation, but the RCIPS Financial Crime Unit (FCU) has refused to confirm or deny if it is examining any of the issues. However, CNS has learned that the case was referred to the Anti-Corruption Commission and sources say that it was then referred back to the financial cops.

Whether or not the police intend to pursue the allegations, no one from the port authority’s board or management team or the tourism ministry have stated if any reports have been made to the police or what, if any, consequences have flowed from the recently exposed issues.

The damning report, which was published by the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) on Friday night, reveled a catalog of mismanagement and potential abuse at the authority.

The police have confirmed that they have not received any reports regarding the allegations concerning the theft of $6,000 worth of boat engines.

However a spokesperson for the FCU told CNS in response to our inquiries that it could not comment in regard to the rest of the allegations which have been made. “We cannot confirm or deny an investigation related to the auditor’s report or findings at this time,” a spokesperson added.

Seriously all, the Port has responsibilities that are massive. Having over a million tourists arrive per year and pass through our infrastructure and depart the same day . Plus all of the containers to deal with . This is just unbelievable that you would be here venting about such minor problems. So, no one company is perfect but we all are trying our best. And I don’t work for the Port, in case you’re wondering, I’m just in awe of how well they are dealing with the increased amount of business as a result of Cayman’s prosperity. I doubt others could deal w this as well.

Oh you forgot the nice plush $130,000 furniture from the public purse. If you haven’t notice, that is the cost of a house that a less fortunate Caymanian could have had.

And they have a problem sacking him or what? Either the Board sack him, or the Ministry sack the Board! This is really ridiculous and unacceptable.

The ministry controls the port board. The mnistry controls the steering committee. Strawn and Moses contriol the ministry so they control the port project. The only transparent part of the project is that we can clearly see where Strawn and Moses fit in.

The deal is that you don’t even recognize corruption because it is so universal up in here. If everyone is doing it, it must be okay…

Seriously…Is there any part of this Government or related Authorities that is not dirty?
If you review the headlines over just the last few years, it is shameful. I know every Country has it’s scandals, but what they are doing here is ridicules and it seems like there is no end.
Blame who you want…The system is rotten and needs a deep clean (and I hate to say it, probably best not from within the Island)

Yeah and “deep clean” like the man from the North or the Tempura bunch – Not! I condemn any wrong doing and it must be dealt with properly. I’ll like to investigate some of you self-righteous ranters on here and see how perfect you are. While I am at it I would like to do an “open recruitment” for your job position. For those of you who like to denigrate Caymanians, I am confident that I would find someone else in the wide world that can perform your job better than you and for less pay as well!

You also notice that if it weren’t for CNS and the Compass we wouldn’t hear about anything? Our Govt are mute about everything and the corrupt get away with murder down here. It goes back to the 70s-80s. Its farcical the way people carry on and outright criminal behaviour is dealt with and handled. These guys make a mockery of their positiions and this country yet nothing is done and f**ktards keeping supporting them.
