One driver causes five-car pile-up

| 17/05/2018 | 32 Comments

(CNS): One person ended up in hospital with minor injuries Wednesday afternoon after a single driver caused a five-car pile-up close to the Savannah Primary School on Shamrock Road. The collision, which blocked the eastbound lane for more than an hour, was caused by a white Nissan Caravan crashing into a red Chevrolet Cruze, which had stopped at the end of a line of vehicles after a burgundy Mitsubishi Pajero at the head of the line of traffic had slowed down in order to make a turn.

As a result, there was a chain crash, with each car being shunted into the one in front, including a grey Honda Civic and black Toyota Mark X, which were in the middle. The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital and treated while the occupants of the other vehicles declined medical attention.

Officers called to the scene of the collision were forced to direct traffic until the cars could be cleared and the roadway was reopened.

It seems like a lot of posters missed the part in thr article that said

“was caused by a white Nissan Caravan crashing into a red Chevrolet Cruze, which had stopped at the end of a line of vehicles after a burgundy Mitsubishi Pajero at the head of the line of traffic had slowed down in order to make a turn”

So, this infers that the person at the back wasn’t paying attention and slammed into one car, which was stationary, causing a domino effect because all the others were slowing down or were also stationary because the one in front was turning so all these comments about tailgating and all the drivers being in the wrong, is a pile of hogwash.

When I drive i stay a safe breaking distance behind the car in front of me , and dont worry about the one behind me unless he is close to my back bumper then i will give warning , because if he hits my vehicle in the rear end , he is at fault .
Then I don’t hit no one in front of me .

Tailgating is a serious problem, 1/2 car length is not safe. But you see it every single day. Police must enforce safe travel distances, and it needs to be a core element of road safety awareness.

When I was taking driver education classes we were told that following distance should be a minimum of 1 car length per every 10 mph. For example, if you are going 30 mph you should be 3 car lengths behind the car in front. This distance should increase in bad weather. I have had cars driving so close behind me that I can’t even see their license plate in my mirror. I have also had people driving right behind me while they are texting… very scary!

Again – read the article. The cars were stationary. This is not a tailgating issue it’s an issue of an idiot running into the back of a q.

And what difference – if true – does that make to the muppet who ran into the back of a q of traffic stopped because he was as turning? Does anyone actually read articles before venting in their personal hobby horse?

Give me a brake! All of the drivers were at fault for following too close, not just one.

That’s they way they drive here. If they aren’t up your ass, they aren’t going anywhere. I often jam on my breaks hoping to get rear ended and teach them a lesson.

What are you eating when you jam on your breaks? Maybe that’s the problem – jam on your brakes!

9 : 26 am , you should STOP that if that is your reason for jam on your brakes , because you might get peanut butter too , and the life you save might be your own . T1he last person that I knew to do that for that reason , his mom had to use his last few dollars to buy casket .

    • Jotnar says:

Read the article. All the other cars had stopped. Can’t say they were following too close if they were not moving.

It was more than 2 hours. Newlands bypass was block up too.

A typical example of where one person’s inconsiderate behaviour has affected so many… the other drivers who were involved having to deal with damaged vehicles and insurance companies, all the other road users who suffered delays, etc. Not to mention the money from the public purse that would have been spent on fuel for emergency vehicles responding.

Someone’s either asleep at the wheel, on the phone as usual and maybe the person turning doesn’t know what indimacators is.
