Ex-civil servant admits stealing over CI$18k

| 17/05/2018 | 28 Comments

(CNS): A former civil servant has admitted stealing $18,890 from the Cayman Islands government. The money had been collected in rents for the use of various public buildings when she worked in the facilities management department. Trisha Jackson (38) pleaded guilty to stealing the cash over more than five years, from the end of 2011 to the beginning of last year, before she was fired after the missing cash was discovered during internal government audits and the case passed to police.

Following her appearance in Summary Court Wednesday, where she pleaded guilty to theft, Jackson was bailed until sentencing in July.

Stealing is wrong. It does not matter if it is $1.00 or $100,000.
It all comes down to greed. Some people would rather beg than steal. My parents taught me that if it does not belong to you, leave it alone.

People should not steal whether in government or private sector. Stealing is wrong on any level and certainly goes against God’s will.

It is better to become a begger than to be a thief. We all face financial hardships at times, but it is by no means a reason to steal.

As far as am concerned, thieves have no conscience or shame. If I stole something from anyone, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at nights, and if it’s from my employer, I would probably have a nervous breakdown trying to keep a straight face and carrying on business as usual.

Mercy me! If I did steal and was caught, I would be so ashamed of myself that I would probably not show my face in public again, ever.

No excuses. Only, and until the courts decide to lay some heavy fines AND jail time on the ever growing population of this faternity, will people desist from this egregious behaviour.

This is almost as much as I pay in Customs duty per month.
I feel so much better to know that I am supporting a worthy cause.

We asked for accountability in the civil service and now we got it.

This level of theft would be covered up in the private sector.

Covered up in the private sector? Are you stupid? Have you ever worked in the private sector? You get fired for taking a pen without permission out the supply cupboard, not turning up to work without informing your boss or pulling too many sick days after they see your posts on Instagram! Meanwhile in Govt if you do the same they put you on paid leave whilst they figure out where to move you 2 years after the fact because they know you, your mama or grew up with you in Spott Bay. If Govt to action like the private sector when full play is committed our unemployment figures would be doubled and Northward could act as another Govt department.

5.24pm This level of theft would not occur in the private sector as it would not take 5 years to uncover it, and it would certainly never be covered up.So are you celebrating that after all the years and all the examples of mismanagement and incompetence from hundreds if not thousands of civil servants we are finally having someone held to account?.

I really can’t believe these comments. We ask for accountability in the civil service and we are getting it big time. Never before have I seen such accountability in the civil service.

Now we are complaining that it took too long to find out that this x civil servant was able to steal $18k over 5 years. That works out to a little more than $10 a day.

But yet we read about hundreds of thousands of dollars being stolen in the private sector. Guess that was done in one day.

Folks no system is theft proof. Thank you civil service for improving accountability. I also note that this employee was not on a paid holiday. Thank you.

7.13pm You just have to be a civil servant saying the theft “was little more than $10 a day” and demonstrating thereby, your total lack of ability to make an intelligent comment based on the facts. As for saying “never before have we seen such accountability” we have still only had a handful of employees held accountable out of many thousands, but I suppose you are right in claiming this is an “imrovement” oner the zero figure in the last three decades.

Stealing over a period of more than 5 years before it was discovered, how many more civil servants are getting away with it?.

Everyone who could in Govt for the last 30yrs has raped this country and abused their position because everyone did before them and got away with it. If the Standards of Public Management Law was actually passed we would have to allow those with PR to run for the LA because there would be no other options other than direct rule. When the f**k are people going to wake up and see its a free for all at the trough, always has been and that those they wote for are nothing but parasites, thieves and frauds? Probably never as long as our youths are pumped out the system as illiterate failures to society who need handouts, blys and promises that they are too daft to see through from Pirates that call themselves Honorable.

Ah, Cayman mentality…that makes it all OK then? We can all steal because the white collar people do…and that in itself is a big statement with no fact to back it up. Still, what else would you expect from someone with an understanding that crime is OK as long as someone is doing it bigger?

Nonesense. People stay many times because they do not have to face the racism and denigration of locals which is rife in the private sector. Many foreign expats are allowed to come here and mistreat people with impunity. Check the law firms.

Why do people mess up their entire life/career for stealing a few petty dollars ? I guess that they didn’t read the quotes from the Bible , seek and you shall find , ask and you shall be given . Con Watson didn’t read the quotes too .
