ESO begins work to update household register

| 28/05/2018 | 29 Comments

(CNS): The Economics and Statistics Office has begun collecting basic housing information across the three Cayman Islands in order to update its Household Register. The public is asked to cooperate with staff from the office who will be visiting addresses on the register, which is used as the sampling frames from which households are selected for Labour Force Surveys and other surveys, such as the national census.

A full household register update will be conducted in all five districts of Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands. This requires trained enumerators to visit buildings in each enumeration area, as well as proposed or newly constructed dwellings based on building permits information from the planning department.

ESO staff members can be identified by their ESO IDs and members of the public should ask the field workers to present them before providing any information. They may also call the hotline at 345-516-3329 for verification of enumerators or to express any concerns they may have.

  1. Forget it says:

On the Brac the people asking the questions are local civil servants, not ESO staff. Does anyone feel comfortable giving out personal information to their next door neighbour?
The answers become hot topics in the admin building, confidentiality means nothing there.

The ESO is the only way cayman will discover which industries to further invest in for the success of the islands future. Fill out your surveys and do your part.

Nonsense. Much of the data released by the ESO is so disconnected from reality as to not only be of limited use, but to be potentially dangerous. Case in point: the same week they said there were 17,000 foreign workers in Cayman, Immigration said there were 25,000 work permit holder here, not including Permanent Residents!

This could be a simple classification issue, or an issue of data not being updated among agencies in synchronicity. These are not intrinsic problems, they are hiccups that can easily be resolved.

“Simple classification issue” – lol well that sums up CIG in a nutshell if you think that’s the case – Are you a civil servant? I admire your positivity towards the ESO but most people think its a waste of time, money and resources, except the people who work there obviously.

..and make decisions of which industry gets support based upon what? We need more of the ESO, not less, or major decisions will be based upon myopic views and Cayman can not afford, anymore, to make major mistakes. ESO is a relatively young operation compared to other countries, countries that make wise decisions based upon SNA statistics. Without them, we would be rudderless.

When the ESO says the population is 60,000, but in realty 75,000 live here, and no notice is taken of tens of thousands of tourists on top, you end up with not enough school spaces, not enough garbage trucks, and not enough roads. Touch and feel is free and much more accurate than the nonsense we are getting.

And where is your data to backup the 75000? Maybe this is not about the ESO doing a good job with reported data, but about illegal immigrants using cayman resources and hiding from the ESO so that the ESO does under-report statistics. That only means the ESO is doing their job correctly and not making up numbers and that the real problem is immigration.

Immigration can tell ESO accurately (give or take a few hundred) how many people of what nationality are here. If ESO actually asked Immigration, it could stop guessing and wasting so much money in the process. Of course if ESO does not believe Immigration knows how many people of what nationality are here, perhaps they should ask the responsible minister to explain.

Reconcilliation of a statistics from 2 sources is part of checks and balances. Get rid of one and the other cannot be verified externally.

What other way can you think of to get a snap-shop of the economy other than copying, redundantly, what they are doing? They are on the right track.

In addition to their already good team, If they hire some people with a technical edge that could streamline the data gathering process, their results will become more precise, year after year. But for what they have accomplished already for such a small team is nothing short of amazing.

Online, secret survey that most everyone does. The data is complied automatically and then people don’t have to go door to door and get lied to.

Or a combination of a system that collects data automatically in real time from some establishments, a auto-survey for some, and interviews for others. The technology is there, need the right people with the right visions and background to make it happen. In the end it will all be automated, lets work with the early adaptors first, and work with the others until they decide to come aboard.

More precise? Do you know what precise means? You have strung a bunch of words together without any cogent argument. You should consider a career as a politician.

Precise means different things in different contexts. Debates among people who argue over their personal and singular definitions of words is equivalent to two dogs chasing each others tails around each other.

Why dont you indulge me with the mathematical vs statistical vs colloquial definition of precise. While you do that I have some other more meaningful work to deal with, and then you can tell me which is the more appropriate use in the context of an audience of an online commons commentors area.

No. Fascist Germany. The holocaust was the most horrific element of what it was responsible for, but was not the only thing naziism became infamous for. Meticulous record keeping and statistics was an important element of the way the state operated. No one tried to compare the ESO to the holocaust.

All they have to do is look at the number of work permits and the categories as well as how many persons are looking for work and what categories. That is if they are interested in the welfare of Caymanians.

Feels like every week the ESO is collecting data for something. I just don’t answer the door. In this day and age the data should be collected online. Then perhaps you will find more willing participants than not. Few people like unannounced intrusions at home.

I get hooked up for this “random” selection every time. I think it’s because my household is perceived as being both middle class and kindly.

We will continue to cooperate as we have in the past — answer everything except those questions we deem to be our business only.
