Dive shop attacker admits stabbing

(CNS): Jaron Solomon, a 29-year-old man from East End, pleaded guilty to a list of offences, including GBH and damaging property, when he appeared in court Monday for trial after he was originally charged with attempted murder. Solomon had previously denied trying to kill his former girlfriend during a frenzied attack a dive-shop in East End where she worked, where he also assaulted her co-workers who came to her aid. Prosecutors accepted Solomon’s last-minute guilty pleas this morning and agreed not to press the attempted murder charge.

The woman who was Solomon’s target sustained serious injuries from multiple stab wounds during the violent attack last July, in which he assaulted three other people who tried to help the victim and also smashed a window in the store.

A sentencing hearing was set for July after the court ordered a victim impact report, a psychology report and a social inquiry report. Solomon was remanded in custody.

You accept last minute guilty pleas on serious charges when the perpetrator lives outside your gated communities. How long before he is back on the streets…

What you mean to question is how much reduction should the judge give for the last-minute guilty plea. IIRC its usually not much.

What you mean to question is the prosecutor accepting the slightly less serious Grievous Bodily Harm charge than the attempted murder charge (with an assumed reduction in jail time). – Probably because a guaranteed win (expected jail time) is better than a possible technical loss due to having to prove attempt to murder (vs GBH, i.e., cut but not kill).

You raise an interesting question – that could have been better done without casting ‘gated community’ aspersions – which is what is an appropriate societal protection from possible re-offending, i.e., how long should people be locked away? And, more problematic, how good are our in-prison rehabilitation efforts?

I’m sorry but based on the reports of this crime there should have been a trial for attempted murder or something more than “GBH”. Why does the prosecutor’s office avoid trials in well supported cases like this while taking dog cases to trial and getting whipped?

The CPS should be ashamed of themselves. This man inflicted mutiple stab wounds on this poor lady causing serious injuries and would probably have killed her if her co-workers had not intervened, yet the CPS are only too pleased to drop the attempted murder charge in order to save themselves from having to prosecute the case. This results in a much lighter sentence, which surely given the circumstances should not apply to this highly dangerous man.

Sorry to burst your bubble but this has nothing to do with any gang. He is a very jealous young man who needs mental health help. He has extreme anger issues and needs to be on medication and receive counseling. Yes, he did inflict horrible injuries on the young lady but throwing a label such as gang affiliation is untrue and unwarranted as nothing states he was involved in a gang. Not every crime committed is due to gangs

This is very true. I knew him when he was younger and he was humble and easy to talk to. Years go by, circa 2009/10 the girl he was seeing at the time was absolutely terrified of him as he was beyond jealous and would become very violent with her if she even looked at another guy to say hi.

I don’t think he changed much, just showing his true colours now.

He’s sick, needs help, doubt anything or anyone in Cayman can help his kind!

He is mentally unstable beyond repair…..and acts as if he is demonically possessed!
