Cops shoot pit bull during early morning raid

| 12/05/2018 | 77 Comments

(CNS): An officer from the RCIPS Tactical Firearms Unit shot and wounded a pit bull, which later had to be put down, during a raid to look for illegal guns early Friday morning. The armed cops were accompanying Joint Task Force officers (RCIPS and Customs) who were executing a search warrant at an address in the Bodden Road area of George Town. During the search, the officers recovered a loaded handgun and two spear guns, and a 54-year-old man and a woman at the location were taken into custody.

Police said that during the operation the pit bull aggressively ran towards one of the officers as if to attack. As it approached, the officer shot the dog once, wounding it. A vet, who was called immediately, came to the location and took the dog away for medical treatment, but it later had to be put down.

The incident has been referred to the Office of the Ombudsman, police said.

Meanwhile, the woman has since been bailed by police while the man, who was arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm, remains in custody.

One more thing, why do some vets I’m not saying all at all at all just put pit bulls down because they are afraid of them I really just want to know that. also I just want people to know not all pit bulls are mean I mean is the owner the owner is teaching the pitbull ‘s stuff is been in the pit boss so the pit bulls are all afraid they’re just trying to be territorial also I have an example of someone making a pitbull terrible and mean so I don’t talk to him anymore it’s my dad so or not anymore he’s not my dad anymore of course but he trained his pit bull to be racist and because he was racist so there is a good example for you guys.

Do we know why certain breed of dogs are preferred to be trained to do certain jobs , and some dogs aren’t trainable at all.
The breed of dogs intelligence to learn has a lot to do with their ability to be trained. Just like the human.

But the difference between german shepherd dogs and pit bull , the difference between the two is like day and night .
I have seen situations with both species and the shepherd was the one to obey the commands.

If the animal is not registered and brought to a vet, they have a week at the most for the animal to be claimed with registration or to have registration started else the animal is put down. It’s the law.

Why would you do that. If you were a dog you would want to see who was there and you would start running towards the strange people. Also before you shoot a dog make sure it’s trying to harm you because it could just be excited to see you all are very scared and trying to protect itself I mean wouldn’t you want to protect yourself some strange person just got up in your grill? Please consider the following that I just said. I am not trying to be disrespectful obnoxious or rude in anyway offending you it’s just that I love pit bulls and I started crying after I read this make sure that this doesn’t happen again unless it’s trying to harm somebody or you don’t even have to shoot the dog just go a different way just walk become and call Cesar 911 now I know that you are number maybe maybe maybe not sure but Cesar is a dog person so he’ll know what to do and he knows how to take care of it but he has a pitbull so next time please call him instead of just shooting a dog and we get how would you like it if it was your dog you probably wouldn’t like it and please don’t ever judge pit bulls thank you for taking your time a day everything this.

I just do not get this. XXXXX all you all commented on are dogs. Shows where your priorities are, crime or animal rights.

CNS moderator: I usually close the comment box after someone has been arrested because people cannot comment on the people arrested or the crime until the case is dismissed, there is a guilty plea or a verdict. In this case I have left the comment box open but I am only allowing comments on the shooting and/or ownership of the dog because it is a separate issue. So the nature of the comments is in no way reflective of the priorities of those commenting.

The owner of dog should face fine per Animals (Prohibited Dogs) Regulations (2012 Revision).

“Where an owner is found by the CAVO to be in violation of these regulations the CAVO shall report the matter to the Legal Department for prosecution, and that owner shall be liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of four thousand dollars.”

    http://www.gov.ky/portal/pls/portal/docs/1/11525305.PDF

The breeding of any Pit Bull cross was banned May 6, 2002. All owners of these dogs face a $4000 fine, regardless of whether or not it was “rescued” from the Humane Society.

My thoughts exactly. One of the reasons we are still considered ‘third world’ as we can’t seem to think outside the box. Some countries in Europe require pits and other ‘dangerous breeds’ to wear muzzles in public. Something so simple can save a lot of dog lives and put those at ease that seem to be so scared of the breed.

I believe that RCIPS should have additional training to deal with dogs more effectively for raids as these are the same people that accidentally discharge firearms. One day they will miss the dog and hit somebody.

Any breed of dog will try to protect the owner if they feel there is aggression towards them. My lovely sweet Cayman mutt would do the same.
The owner should have been given an opportunity to restrain the dog. And yes, people are breeding these illegal dogs on island..

I wonder why police if what you’re saying is true I wonder why police don’t use pit bulls as police dogs obviously because German shepherds have a better bite and drink and nobody says that German Shepherd’s are more dangerous than pit bulls but really in real life they are I’ve seen a German Shepherd swallow a guys head and I’m never seen a pitbull do that we’re not saying that German Shepherd’s are bad but we’re just saying that German Shepherd’s are more dangerous the pit bulls just saying learn your facts were making a point pit bulls are not that strong unless the person abuses them to do that OK OK have a nice day thank you sir not really have a bad day and also by the way my Mimi got bit by a dog when she was younger and it almost swallowed her face and she had to go to the hospital to get stitches but the dog was not a pitbull thank you very much

I dare you to post your name and address and see how you act when the police come knocking on your door. It’s attitudes like that that there is such issues in Cayman. Everyone wants illegal activities stopped so we can all be safe but NO ONE wants THEIR illegal activities stopped. Stop being so hypocritical. You knew getting a pit bull puppy was illegal. Don’t bitch and moan when someone comes to take it away, you set yourself up for that, no one else did. My only regret from reading that article was the shot didn’t kill the dog outright and it suffered before being put down. Shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

Yawn. It’s NOT illegal to own locally bred Pit bulls or other prohibited breeds (unfortunately this doesn’t include some humans breeding, but I digress).

Let’s see what happens when a law abiding citizen, who happens to own 2 Pits, no issues with surrounding spaces, etc. What happens when the police show up and want to remove without just cause…

So, you reply with your address and name first, and I’ll do so myself. CNS can visit us both for each of our story on the issue of Pit bulls and why the hate for them (plus other breeds. We’ll also discuss the human breeding problem and why are there not more virtirol comments about bad parents/should not have been a parent and the need to educate, etc, etc etc). Important topics people, not just the headline grabbers. Sigh.

The law on pit bulls. Again.. unless your dog is 16 years old, how can it be bred legally in Cayman? Is it registered? Is it spayed or neutered? Is it kept locked up like the law states? If it is then I wish you and your dog(s) long lives, if not you broke the law, plain and simple end of story.

The RCIP and Custom had a special armed Cops accompanied them to do a raid on a house that could’ve been full of guns and people , and only some of the Officers doing the raid has a gun . What would have happened to the Officers , if the 10 people inside the house opened gun fire on the few armed Officers and the unarmed Officers ?
