| 29/04/2018 | 35 Comments

(CNS): One person is confirmed dead and two others injured following a crash Sunday evening on North Side Road, close to the Old Man Bay grocery store, according to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. Just before 8pm on Sunday, 29 April, a vehicle with a driver and two passengers crashed into a light pole. The two injured occupants of the car were taken to the hospital, police said. Traffic officers said that the road was closed in both directions Sunday night as they carry out their investigation at the scene into the cause of the crash.

Check back to CNS later for more on what happened in Cayman’s fourth fatal road smash so far this year.

Honestly, in north side with the roads so long like a highway…. Its impossible not to go a little above the speed limit without fully realising it…and north side is known for its corners and twists and mini hills while driving… These boys are brothers and the only comments on this page should be
    ” my condolences ”
    take your comments to a bar, politician, church or even better say a prayer of blessings;
Let the family grieve in peace and commemorate a life … Hallelujah

It really hurts me to know another young man has losted his life , and my regards go out to the family . As I read a little history of the young man’s life , I learn that he was in a other motor bike accident a few years ago .
Why can’t we learn from our own mistakes and learn from other people’s mistakes .
Here this young man who is caused a lot of grief for everyone . Have we learned from his mistakes ?

For example we look at an investigation for the cause of the incident . Are we learning anything from this tragedy ?
Please don’t think that because it happened to him , it can’t happen to me or you .
So stop drinking , and driving , and speeding .

I have witnessed this first hand.
The mother’s grief haunts me unto this day.
Young people get really bulletproof when they drink.
As a society, a people, multiple races and a creation of a loving God, we should give Him more respect.
He gave us Wisdom. What have we done with it?

    RIP young guy.

Very saddened by this news and not just because I know some of his relatives.

A lot is being assumed in these comments in the absence of the facts.
For example, it is not reported or confirmed that the fatality was the actual driver.

Nevertheless, speed and young men often go together unfortunately, and while we look on in disbelief and disdain, it is a reality all over the world.

I can only implore our boy-racers to minimise the risks you do take and understand that on Cayman’s roads, it is more luck than skill that keeps you alive as you zoom around.

To demand and expect a complete halt in this activity is futile, and in my case, would be hypocritical as I was once very much a member of that crowd.

Speed-fever is something that only time, maturity, or a painful smash-up will cure.

(This is not to downplay the seriousness of the issue, but unless one is wired for these thrills, one cannot understand the culture. An outsider only sees the dangers to wider society and addresses from that perspective.
It literally is like a buzz or high from a drug or alcohol.)

In the meantime, please understand the risks and expect a few injuries, cuts, and broken bones – at a minimum.

    I should know.

Worst of all, there is the strong possibility of hurting a complete stranger or a loved one – something that can ruin relationships, destroy families, and instill a lasting sense of regret.

My deepest condolences to his family.

    * A bit of hopefully helpful advice;
    – Never speed or race after drinking.
    – Never speed or race with passengers.
    – NEVER allow another to speed or race with you as a passenger! (That was my #1)
    – Always remember, it is only luck that determines if you make it home alive – NOT your “skills”.
    – NEVER, NEVER, NEVER take liberties and chances with Cayman corners. Never!

I agree with raising the drinking age to 21. That would have been a good trade-off for the new Sunday liquor sales law.

It’s not going to stop until government change traffic legislation to All vehicle must have a accelerator governor to maximum speed of 50mph. No more excess speed. Modern vehicles have onboard computers. Therefore technology can be used to save our country. However nothing changes in these island without a mas out cry of the masses. And the consumption age need to be changed. Alcohol has caused so much harm. There has been more families lives destroyed by alcohol than any other drug substance. However more consumption, more revenue for government to sustained infrastructure.

While I have no issue driving 50mph or less, even if the car can only go 50mph, that would still be a dangerous speed in a 25, 30 or 35mph zone and other areas.

I have witnessed drivers overtaking on blind corners and they are going less than 50mph.

Common sense and responsibility must prevail. Technology can only do so much.

I remember when the same headline was talking about my son in 2013, and in North Side also. I feel your horror and pain today. May God be with you in the days to come. There are no words that can lessen what you feel today, but know that others are with you in spirit and in prayer. So very sorry for your unimaginable loss.

Bad drivers and no law enforcement =lots of accidents. Part of living on a third world island. I see bad driving and close calls everyday here. I see police on the road about once or twice a month.

I am truly very sorry for the victims family. I cannot and DO NOT want to imagine what it feels like to lose a child.

That being said it appears that young people today seem to find it a right of passage to own fast cars and see just how much speed they can achieve in them . I know this comment will meet with many thumbs down but the fact remains that we need to increase the age requirement to own a drivers license and being able to drink legally to 21 years of age. Maybe that would help enable our young people to mature into young adults who are more responsible instead of now giving them a license to kill themselves or others on the road.

They can increase the drinking age all they want… that will never stop people under the age of 21 from drinking, nor will it help these young men realize that they are not invincible, life can be taken from you at any second.

RIP to the young man, prayers to the other in critical condition and their family.

He was over 21 by far so not sure if that would really help, nor was he in a fast car at all. Doesn’t have to be a “fast car” to lose your life and that’s a fact! We need to start having some kind of regard for our lives as young men. And if we can’t do that, then have some for the innocent families that share the same road as we do! I knew John John really well, in fact we graduated together. But as much as it hurts to say this, I’m glad he didn’t kill any innocent person in the process. RIP my boy

FYI, it wouldn’t have done any good in this case as he was 27 and with your logic he would have already been old enough to drink and drive. Sorry for the loss to his family and friends.

Another tragedy, but the fact is we knock down more light poles than anywhere else, and it’s by no means mostly expatriate drivers.

RIP and condolences to the family. Hope the survivors recover well.

I cannot say if speed had anything to do with this accident because i don’t know, but over the years, during Christmas and especially Easter weekends, I’ve sat at a home very near this accident site and seen cars coming from “down the road” (Rum Point/North Side direction) at speeds approaching 80 mph as they approach the Old Man Bay corner near the playing field. That a fatal accident has now occurred in this area is no surprise to me – it was just a matter of “when”.

those darn poles, they come out of no where. How do you crash into a pole and why does it happen so often on cayman? It’s so bad that they must put reflective stickers on the poles. I have never seen that before.
