Car ablaze on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway, 10 March 2018

(CNS): A man who was rescued from a car wreck  just before it was engulfed in flames Saturday evening is in critical condition, police have said. Three men were in the Honda Accord travelling along the Esterley Tibbetts Highway at around 8:30pm, when the driver apparently lost control, police said. The car ran off the road and overturned in the vicinity of the Island Heritage Roundabout and caught fire; two of the men managed to get out of the car and pulled the third out before it was completely engulfed in flames. The RCIPS said the driver of the vehicle is yet to be determined.

All three men were transported by the ambulance to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment and the fire was put out by the Cayman Islands Fire Service. Two of the men are believed to have minor injuries but the third is believe to have serious and life-threatening-injuries.

The grade on that roundabout is very adverse to the vehicle. It is no wonder that cars slide off it in the numbers they do. Any average Joe knows that curves should be graded INWARD and not OUTWARD. Ever seen a race track with the turns not graded to the extreme inside? What lunatics are designing these roadways??

I believe this accident happened south of the roundabout, and not on the roundabout itself. Clearly excessive speed and not the fault of the design of the roundabout was the cause.

I’ve lost count of the number of vehicles I have pulled out of the bush on that roundabout, as it is a seriously flawed design. Several others have been “redone” recently for the same reasons, so don’t try to say that speed and bad driving are the sole causes. In the first rains after a long dry period, These roundabouts are ALL like glare ice with the accumulated oil on the road. I’ve traversed that roundabout at 5MPH after a brief rain shower, and still nearly slid off the surface!

Adjust your speed for the available grip. Not difficult. In any event the crash was before the roundabout.

Does Cayman have road cleaning vehicles regularly cleaning all the roads as other countries do? This is a genuine question as I have never seen one.

I am not trying to make excuses for the many idiots on our roads, but recently I almost lost control of my vehicle on a roundabout doing only 15-20 mph. I pulled up afterwards and went to take a look at the road…. Covered in a slimy oily substance. There was a crash in the same spot later that evening.

I don’t know about regularly, but yes, I do see them our with street sweepers. Ironically, I usually see them cleaning traffic circles.

Same thing happened to me at CNB roundabout, luckily no other vehicles were around me or I would have taken them out.

Honda Accord, 3 up, no other cars involved, skid marks from the braking zone into the trees. You don’t need a CSI degree to take a wild stab in the dark that the driver was a muppet who didn’t have the talent or car to drive as fast as he was.

Have you read the traffic court list anytime recently? Vehicle insurance is only a problem if you bother insuring it in the first place. Same issue with licencing. As long as you don’t get into an accident where the police are called, or pulled over at one if the very infrequent roadblocks, you pretty much have nothing to worry about.

No never seen the traffic court list. No work permit issue with driving without insurance conviction?

        • Jotnar says:

First, you need to get caught. Then you need to be successfully prosecuted. Then the conviction has to reflect on your criminal record. Not sure this is recorded as such – a lot of traffic offences are not. And for it to be a work permit issue you would have to need a work permit.

A news video shows a long thick lockup mark of their front right tire before it exits the road arcing to the left- that not only suggests very high speed coming into the braking zone for the roundabout, but also more drag and friction on the left hand side of the vehicle than the locked front right tire. Leads one to think they must have bottomed out and broke front left suspension or steering rod or an aftermarket wheel lug coming airborne over the hump by Strand with three passengers. Or the tires were badly flat-spotted from bad driving. A lot of the reconstruction evidence will have been sheared off on the curb, or burned now.

The Police need to get unroadworthy cars off the road before they hurt passengers or innocent bystanders. Illegal tint, bald tires, lowered cosmetic coil over kits, massive exhaust cans, catalytic converter deletes, colourful aftermarket “Ben Hur” wheel lugs…there are a lot more than expired coupons and uninsured vehicles out there to look for, and local stores are selling cheap street “race-look” equipment and tinted products for cars and bikes. Having no regular Police checks, there is no psychological deterrent to speeders and selfish road anarchists.

This accident, sad as it is because of the injuries and damage, is just another manifestation of neglected Police duty.

The worst thing is they have no idea how tragic they look. Putting a $100 wing on a sh1tty Honda doesn’t turn it into a race car, it turns it into an even sh1ttier Honda with a $100 wing on.

I travel the roads of Cayman a lot – there are lots of dangerous speeders with totally NO regards for themselves, much less others. Speed, speed and more speed. Weaving in and out of traffic, cutting other cars off, not using indicators, some cars are not roadworthy. Totally no driving etiquette and No respect. Dangerous. And…..traffic police …. they are a joke. This place is an all around total mess.

Can’t blame the road for this one as the accident site is before you enter the roundabout if they were coming from town…unless of course they were travelling towards town and over shot the exit and jumped the median to end up in the bush on the wrong side of the road. Glad they got out before the fire was out of control regardless.

I get your point but a competent driver in a well maintained car can drive safely at speed. Stick a halfwit in a crappy old Honda and he’s going to crash it even if he’s only doing 40.

Surely the time is coming when the public interest demands the banning of old Honda Accords. The younger lower classes lack the respect for the laws and respect for the wider community to have access to such vehicles.

The lower socio-economic groups in many countries consistently have measurably less respect for others and the law and less self-control as study after study has shown. So sorry if the facts do not fit with your PC attitude. But that attitude which prevents legislation targeted at those it will affect most for the benefit of society as a whole kills people.

you have a multi billion dollar industry who have convinced these kids that ricing up their cars. By buying modified car parts. Actually makes these family vehicles into sports cars. The fact of the matter is, unless your going in a straight line. They aren’t sports cars. The kids fail to understand or have been made aware. That the frames of these cars are still built like family cars. The frames twist and bend with road conditions. Sports cars do not do this. Their frames are made ridged. So going around corners and bends keeps the frames perfectly straight and the actual road mechanics of the suspensions handle that part.
This is why you see “honda” this and that. in at least 3 accidents a year. How many accidents do you see porsche, mercedes or even BMW in?I t’s rare. Because even if you drive like an idiot in one. They are more forgiving in road conditions. Because they are built for the autobahn.

If your going to rice a car, buy an old BMW, at least the frame is alot stiffer as it’s made for the autobahn.

      1. Mitsubishi Evolution
      2. Mazdas
      3. BMW’s (sports cars)
      4. Mercedes (sports cars)
      5. Maserati
      6. Audi (sports cars)
      7. ALL the bikes on island….

I guess by your rationale, we should all just ride a scooter.

its’ not a stupid response. My point is. How many times have we seen those family cars (aka hondas) getting into accidents all by themselves. Not smashing into another car, but vs a telephone pole, into a ditch. Lets not kid ourselves. It is always due to speed. Now lets compare that to real sports cars. ya…night and day difference. And there is only one reason why. One is really meant to be driven like a sports car. And one is not. No matter how many after market parts you buy for it. Because the basic building blocks of the car cannot be changed. The frame!

They rice em up, and think because they lower their cars they are now sports cars. Able to handle the corners like real sports cars. They are not.

If we inject common sense into the mix as well. Either these kids are al smarter than all of ferrari, lambourghini, porsche maserati, BMW, mercedes and all the other real sports car engineers and auto makers out there.

Or they are being lied to by a billion dollar industry, and a movie industry that shows these riced up cars doing impossible things and not actually showing how many cars they ruined to get the shot, senario.

And I dont’ think it’s because the sports car engineers are idiots.

And they drive these cars like they shouldn’t be. And they pay the price.

I drive that same stretch of road daily in an Accord and have never lost control at the subject round-about . How odd that other Accords must have a problem negotiating the curve at the posted speed limit & at a speed which would allow a driver to maintain control & with such control , prevent his vehicle from bursting into flames. Its absolutely puzzling…
