Webb secures another sentence delay

(CNS): Almost three years since Jeff Webb (54), a former president of the Cayman Islands Football Association, was rounded up in the US justice department investigation into international football corruption and over two years since his conviction for racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies, his sentence hearing has been postponed yet again. The seventh date for the hearing has been set for September after Webb secured a postponement of the scheduled hearing this week.

It is increasingly unlikely that Webb, who rose to become president of the regional body, CONCACAF, and vice president of FIFA, will serve any time in jail after his cooperation with the authorities in the FIFA probe, his admissions and the forfeiture of around $6.7 million.

He has served most of the last few years under house arrest after agreeing to go to the US to face the music following his arrest in Zürich in May 2015. He and a number of other FIFA officials and sports marketing executives were arrested during a pre-dawn raid at a luxury hotel in the Swiss city.

The original tight restrictions on Webb’s bail conditions have gradually decreased, fueling speculation that he is unlikely to go to jail. He is also understood to have sold the luxury home he was living in with his American wife and child in  Atlanta, Georgia, in an effort to raise the cash needed to pay the confiscation order.

The delay in sentencing also impacts the pending local charges against Webb for his role in the CarePay scandal at the hospital. He accused of conspiring with his close friend and business partner, Canover Watson, who was convicted in the hospital corruption case, to cream off millions of dollars from a health services authority contract.

While Cayman has an extradition treaty with the US, a request for his return home cannot be made until the proceedings against him in New York are complete.

This is how the Lodge-controlled legal system in Cayman rolls. I defy anyone to tell me different.
I can assure you, Mr. Webb is not punishing, nor inconvenienced in any way at this moment in time and if you don’t believe it, get off your lazy asses and check.

He will be sentenced and then he will get time served for the time spent on house arrest. Looks to me like Watson was the fall guy for the whole care pay scandal. Too many people in higher positions than him were involved so i doubt anyone else will be serving time.

The same thing would happen if he’s extradited back to Cayman to face charges , put off put off and more put off, and more new trials on police bail until old age kills him . As we can see the US and the Attorneys are cleaning him out . GOOD .

When do the Carepay charges have to be leveled by? If there are time constraints should he be charged and convicted in absentia? DPP seems to be planning another failed prosecution on administration grounds to help a connected buddy and prevent disclosure of embarrassing details in regards to the many local enablers.

Settling his DOJ tab with our stolen money!! Our kids’ football programs have paid a heavy price, while he throws bacchanalian champagne-fueled parties and swans around his 10,000 sq ft mansion in silk pajamas. Even with all of our resident experts in the field, Cayman courts made no effort to use bilateral mechanisms to recover the Florida condos and other proceeds of crime. No doubt there will be some thank you transfers made to those in Cayman that enabled deferrals of investigations and belated DPP charges (if they ever materialize). It’s looking like this scumbag will be let go in a few months.

It is perfectly possible for Cayman to ask the US to bring this to a close so Cayman can have him to prosecute next. But you have to ask, you can’t just sit on your ass. I alsothink you are wrong that an extradition request cannot be made in advance of sentencing. It may be deferred but there is nothing to prevent asking.

I am not entirely sure that certain elements are in a hurry to prosecute him here, lest his whistleblowing activities should drag others in with him….No, let him stay there until they can work out a deal…
