Mitzi’s Fine Jewelry, Grand Cayman

(CNS): Madeinys Ebanks-Pol (39) and Adrian Adela Gea (33) were found guilty of stealing $500,000 worth of jewellery from a West Bay Road store in 2015, when a judge delivered his ruling Friday, following a trial last month. The couple, who have ties to Cuba, were remanded in custody until their sentencing, which was set for May. The judge said he believed Gea was the masked man who held up Mitzi’s Fine Jewelry store while Ebanks-Pol, a former employee at the shop, was his co-conspirator.

The couple were said to have been involved in a joint enterprise to rob the store of unique and expensive artisan jewellery after Ebanks-Pol was sacked. Gea was believed to have been the masked man who was said to have a gun when he went into the store around noon on 18 November 2015, threatened the lone female member of staff in the store and smashed the display cases before making off in a car using false, stolen plates.

Ebanks-Pol (39), who was convicted of stealing a number of pieces from the store when she was an employee, just before this robbery, was said to have helped Gea by acting as a lookout and acquiring the false plates.

As he delivered his decision in the case, Justice Hellman, a visiting judge from Bermuda, told Gea that he had found him not guilty of possession of an imitation weapon because there was insufficient evidence to make him sure that what Gea was holding at the time of the robbery was a gun, real or otherwise.

Good job RCIPS investigators. Prison overflowing with hardened criminals. May as well build more rooms as another wave of feral youths around the corner given theses poor kids have no support as fathers are all up North or absentee(perhaps best that way).

I have never understand this argument of absentee fathers or “broken homes” causing crime
For most of Caymans history, the men were all gone for extended periods of time, and family life and raising the kids was left up to the mothers, yet we are still told those days Cayman was an ideal society where everyone looked out for everyone and no one was left out.

We all know the groups propagating these ideals of family values and 2 parents households are just the remnants of the older belief that women need a man to provide for them while they take care of the children and do the housework

Our shortsightedness as a people has always amused me
We are descended from the epitome of one parent homes (with seafaring adultery abound) yet we now decry the same occurrences

Missing the point – we have enough over our own criminals to host at the prison hotel on Island. We don’t need to add them from other jurisdiction in order to be fully booked.

Didn’t we do that with Bryce Merren?

I don’t think “we” did anything. The FEDs set up uncle B in a sting operation and unfortunately he took the bait.

Criminals often do, so nothing unfortunate about it. Its either criminal or its not. Except in Cayman possibly.

In a country where you can force your way into a family’s yard and have your dogs attack them and not do jail time I’m curious what the punishment for this should be. I would suggest: Let them keep half of what they stole, give them some drink vouchers for someplace nice and a book of discount tickets for businesses around the island.
That will put an end to this behavior quicker than quick.
