Police deny tasering child at school event

| 02/02/2018 | 25 Comments

(CNS): Police say that a child accidentally hit by probes from a police stun gun at a school career fair was not tasered as the electrical current was not activated when the mishap occurred. The RCIPS was at the Edna Moyle Primary School in North Side Friday conducting a demonstration of police equipment. The RCIPS said that during the display the “probes on a Taser were accidentally released” and fired at one of the children attending the event, breaking the child’s skin.

The child was reportedly treated on-site and did not require further medical treatment.

“There was no electrical discharge of the Taser during this accident, and the child was not ‘tazed’,” police said. “Full post-incident procedures have been instituted with respect to the accident, which has also been referred to our Professional Standards Unit for investigation.”

The RCIPS apologised for any alarm the accident caused to children and others participating in the event.

That tazer should have had the battery removed and that officer should be fired. Treat all projectile weapons as if loaded and only have them pointed towards a life threatening person. That is what these stupid cops should have been teaching these kids instead of trying to make these kids think that they are watching an episode of World’s Most Incompetent Cops.

Remember when the constable guarding the gate at Government House managed to shoot his relief while ‘demonstrating’ how to use the gun.
    Some things don’t change.

As it was a public school, a good tasering might be a warning as to what is going to happen to some of the students who survive the shootings.

When I look at this accident , I see nothing but stupidity. What was he doing with a loaded teaser gun around kids in School ? Unless he intended the result .

Probably a stationary target. Not sure they would have hit a moving one.

I would be speaking with an attorney if this was my child and sue the police, this was negligent on the part of the officer and as such the police as a whole, not to mention this amounts to an assault, even though accidental or not.

Agree as that’s exactly what they would have said had it been an ordinary citizen accidentally discharging a weapon.

Tasers in the public schools is not that bad an idea. One for each classroom would be a good starting point.

WTF, why were armed officers at a primary school anyway? Even if this was an open careers event, why did they need to show off with guns or taser? Stupid.

    • No RCIP in primary schools says:

The RCIP should dismiss this officer
Clearly negligent. The parents of this child should sue the education Department and the Government for not providing a safe environment which they are responsible to do.
The chief Officer for Education should set a clear policy that no weapons are allow on schools by the police. The are clearly not responsible. I am so upset about this. If i hear the RCIPS is doing a career day at my child school i will keep him home to protect him.

How careless and irresponsible of RCIPS! If that taser had been activated, the electrical charge has the potential of killing a child. Yet they deny??!! Typical Government refusal to assign accountability! Disgusting!

Why would they bring an active TASER to the school… Same as bringing a loaded 357 MAGNUM with the safety on to school foe show and tell. … How smart.

Someone had the TASER in their hand with their finger on the TRIGGER; AIMED the TASER at the student and PULLED the TRIGGER…. You can sugar coat it any way it is still called a TASER weather ARMED or not.
This FOOLISH PERSON AIMED the TASER at the STUDENT and PULLED the TRIGGER.
    This is the PROBLEM.

Yes Alden bring 75 more since quantity seems to your goal as quality is obviously an seriously lacking a Taser this time a firearm the next time i wonder if an accidental discharge of a weapon which hits some innocent person or child will be put down to demonstration or negligent homicide. Had it been a Caymanian police officer he would have been dismissed immediately!!! Stop importing foreign police Alden. When are u going finally get it.

I prefer the ‘foreign’ police – they are more preffessional than many of local officers. Some year back my elderly father who had dementia was walking in the street in the traffic refusing to cone back to the house – two Jamaican police drive by and I hail them and ask for help, and they said it is not a police matter and drove off. Then a British police officer came when I call 911 and spent an hour talking to my dad, and calm him down, then took him to the hospital with me to be safe. He were a blessing from god. I don’t care where they from – cayman is not a third world country and should have professional police.

Can someone explain to me what purpose “conducting a demonstration of police equipment” serves in a primary school other than “wows” and “cools”

Sounds to me like wasting police and government resources

      My thoughts exactly!

And the more I thought of this I recall the pronouncements from the Police that they do no have the resources to properly deal with crime, including the glaring in-your-face traffic crimes seen everyday everywhere! What was the purpose of doing this “demonstration” with primary school children? I could understand at the high school.

My other thought: when was the last time (or when ever) did we hear of CIG organizing a demonstration at primary schools to educate children of the perverts in our society who prey on children and abuse them (all forms of abuse, including sexual abuse) and what these defenseless children (and the teachers) need to do about it?

This is what happens when you give tasers to kids (and I am not talking about the primary school students)

And people want these RCIPS officers to be armed? HA
That would be the end of life on these three islands, either they would accidentally shoot all the inhabitants or accidentally shoot themselves and the criminals would take over
