Man kills dog while under attack

| 02/02/2018 | 51 Comments

(CNS): A Bodden Town man was attacked by two dogs that had escaped from a yard in the area of Crysdel Road as he walked home around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon. As the dogs attacked, the man, who received bites to both his arms and legs, “struck one of the dogs with a pocket knife”. That animal died, police said. The victim was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital after the incident, where he was treated and subsequently released.

The incident is one of a growing list of reported dog attacks in recent months, including the disturbing case of a donkey called Jack, who was a long time resident and mascot at Pedro St James but recently moved to the riding school. Last November Jack was attacked by a pack of dogs that apparently scaled the fence at the stables. It is understood that Jack was put down some time later as a result of the severity of his injuries.

The Department of Agriculture tracked down a dog that is thought to be one of the attackers, but the case is still be under investigation.

After a considerable amount of public concern over many years, the issue of dog attacks has become a priority for the local authorities, and the police recently began rounding up strays in the district of West Bay with the assistance of the DoA.

The latest attack is currently under investigation by the RCIPS and Animal Control Officers from the Department of Agriculture. Anyone with any relevant information is asked to contact Bodden Town Police Station at 947-2220. Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

I hear yo bro. I’m tired of people putting up their big assed hotels and bars on the beach so people can get drunk to forget how meaningless and depressing their lives are. My kids won’t even be able to see the ocean!

I agree, far too many dogs on smb. And sometimes they are not on a leash and owners think it’s acceptable your dog comes and licks me. It’s unacceptable. Some sorts of the beach are like a dog park at the weekend. Keep them at home please.

Why is these dog attacks always considered a police matter, where is the department of agriculture animal control? why are they not the ones dealing with this attacks, I guarantee if they are the ones called to deal with these things, they will soon start picking up all the stray dogs and monitoring the importation, illegal breeding and enforcing the animal law.

Lock those owners in a fenced in area with some other shitheads wild dog, after they are bitten about four times let them out, attitude adjustment. When someone lets their dogs shit on the beach pick it up and throw it at them.

Ban the importation of dogs, there are plenty to adopt. The fashion of bringing in dogs not suited to the tropics is highly irresponsible

Do animals have rights? I think they do and anyone abusing them should be put away. But what pi$$es me off constantly is the luvvy duvvy dog brigade who think their animals have more rights than humans. Walk on SMB, unleashed dogs run up to you uninvited and yapping, snapping or jumping at people, normally to those people that don’t like or are afraid of dogs much…whilst the owner stands their trying to tell you how friendly their dog is. Keep your dogs on a leash people, you have no more right to let them run up and irritate or harass other people, than if I were to do the same to you. If I did that, you would be calling the police. Why is it ok for a dog to do it? It isn’t.

The Bible warned about mixing breeds. People are breeding types of pitbulls on this island. They are not pure breed dogs and they are ferocious.

I think they should be ban

A-hole dog owners are rampant on this Island. It is not the animal that is at fault, it is the idiot owner. Hold them financially responsible, then you will see a change.

I am sick and tired of all the people walking their dogs off leash on Seven Mile Beach. They are often hundreds of feet away from their dogs with no chance of control. If you say something to them they ignore you, defend their rudeness (my dog is friendly)or worse cuss you out. How am I to know your if your dog is friendly or not when he is running at me at full speed? Please excuse me if I kick your dog in the head next time it happens.

The crime is letting your shagging dog free to run up and harass people, jump at them, bark at them or bite them. You are the ones with no sense of responsibility or social understanding. Dogs on a leash or running around your secure yard or a secure place especially for dogs is fine…just not where people who wish to avoid dogs at any cost are walking. Those are the criminals.

Someone needs to tell that idiot on Rum Point Drive, (just outside Cayman Kai) to lock up his two dogs before he loses another one to the road. This is the same residence where the hysterical, but irresponsible owner claimed that because she had consistently allowed her dog to lay in the road, an innocent road user was a quote a ‘murderer’ for accidentally running over the poor animal.
Uneducated and irresponsible dog owners should pay a high price if they can’t keep their dogs under control.

I agree to a certain extent. I think ID chips (which are fairly popular nowadays) would be a better determining factor than collars, by making it a legal requirement for dog ownership.

Collars can come off pretty easily if irresponsible owners are involved (wrong size or damaged ect.) Also if an owned, well behaved dog is found with a chip, its a bit harsh no? 6 months at the humane society would be fair and if no feels like giving it a home then yes, putting it down might be best.

Sugestions from a ‘Hysterical Dog Lover’…

Myself or my family as well. I love dogs and feel badly for those dogs who have irresponsible owners, and wish they had to live off rocks and table scraps and muddy water.

That said, if any junkyard dog comes for me or my family and can’t be coaxed off the ledge, I will kill it.

Then track down the irresponsible owners that feel it is a cultural right to let their dogs roam and start to prosecute them. Make it mandatory that the animals are spayed/neutered and make an example of these owners by hitting them where it hurts. It’s the animals every time that suffer and this is wrong. If you cannot care for your animals in every way you should not own.

Affordable breed neutral law to reduce severe dog attacks:
Charge all owners, keepers, users of dogs that severely injure or kill dogs humans, farm animals, or cats away from the dog’s property, with felony animal neglect and cruelty.

Immediately remove all dogs from their property or their control.

Found guilty, ban them all from any dog contact or ownership for LIFE.

Publicized and enforced, this breed neutral affordable law will begin to make dog owners care enough to prevent that first attack.

Publicized and enforced this will at least prevent recidivism.

Exactly. He must be in fear of something to carry a knife around in his pocket. These animals get treated so badly on that island. The dogs are not born like that they are aggressive to survive there because of the horrible conditions they are in.

      Not a smart idea
if you are caught in public areas with a knife on you in Cayman you can get into serious trouble

Work is fine, your home or yard is fine you might be able to get away with keeping one in your car but walking around with one in your pocket at all times is a bad idea

once the knife blade is under three inches you can stick it in for self defence, and have a very strong case, so stick it in.
