Pageant Beach development proposal

(CNS): Hyatt Hotels has revealed that its brand is coming back to Cayman after it announced a deal with Pageant Beach Hotel Ltd, which received planning permission last week for a ten-storey, 351-room hotel on the George Town waterfront site at the southern end of the West Bay Road. Although there were some objections about the size of the hotel and potential noise pollution, the Central Planning Authority cleared the way for the project after alterations were made to the plans. The site is in a commercial area and was home to a hotel in the early 1970’s.

As work gets underway, there are hopes that the new project will bring a welcome economic boost to the capital and local construction jobs.

The new hotel will be known as the Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman Hotel & Residences and will have guest rooms, studio suites, as well as one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts along a seafront eco-walk. Amenities include six food and beverage venues, a 9,000 square foot destination spa and fitness centre, three swimming pools, retail shops, kids club and screening room.

The developers said the resort is planned to have 25,000 square feet of indoor meeting and event space, which will make it the largest function space in the Cayman Islands. An affiliate of Pageant Beach Hotel will offer a rental program for the residences that will allow participating owners, when not occupying their residences, to have Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman rent their residences to hotel guests.

“We are delighted that the Grand Hyatt brand is expanding in the Caribbean, and especially in Grand Cayman where the hospitality and tourism sector is primarily aimed at the luxury market,” said David Tarr, senior vice president of development for Hyatt.

Howard Sitzer, chairman of Pageant Beach Hotel Ltd, said the company would be developing a sought-after vacation and meeting destination. “Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman Hotel & Residences will represent a unique concept in the Cayman Islands for international leisure travelers and groups looking for the ideal combination of luxury, comfort and function in their resort experience,” he added.

Preparation work appeared to be underway at the site this week and local real estate broker Kim Lund has confirmed he will begin selling the residence as early as next week.

I don’t think it will be that big of a deal, and should bring additional economic benefit to the great island. From what I’ve heard it’s supposed to be an elite, 5-star resort and should bring in wealthy guests who will further help local restaurants, boutiques, etc.

The government should figure out a solution to the traffic and infrastructure point though, maybe spend some of the economic benefit from this hotel on improvements

“GRAND Hyatt GRAND Cayman Hotel and Residences”
A five-year-old could see the idiocy of a name like that.

Dare I ask the Minister of Planning and the NRA what is the plan for parking and traffic control in this area?

Is it going to be next to Poinsettia? Are there noise ordinances in the Cayman Islands? Are there minimum requirements for the protection of the health and safety of the neighboring residents? What about psychological well-being? What about property values? Invest in Cayman and when you are settled, we will do everything we can to make your life hell. What should residents do when construction and operational noise become too much to handle?

As room runs out in and around 7mile Beach and Georgetown, hotels and others have NO choice but to go east! The north is expanding and so will the beautiful east end, especially along the waters edge and view.

  7. The new hotel construction will help to provide local jobs.Problem as I see it we have too much going on at the same time so this means more “outsiders”will be brought in to deal with this project and others like it..Pity the powers that be cant spread these new projects around over say the next couple of years to help cut back on the huge influx of labourers as this I am sure is part of our Immigration “fall through the cracks”problem we have been facing for many years.Hopefully it will work out but I have my doubts.

    • Peter you are spot on. Many of the tourists staying at these two new hotels will head north. BUT add to that the condos opposite and behind Queens Court then the New Dart hotel. Finally the new cruise ship landing. West Bay Road cannot cope with all this traffic. It will be a nightmare. It does not take a genius to figure this out.
Moving onto other elements of the infrastructure there will be both huge numbers employed in construction and later in the hotel industry. I estimate 1000 in the hotel industry. Unless Caymanians propose to breed like rabbits most of these workers will require to be imported. Whilst the hospitals may cope with this how will the schools cope will the huge number of children that come with the new employees.
Cayman has failed in its mission in the area of forward planning. The politics ignored the master road transportation advocated in the eighties and had little regard for the Tourism plan prepared by Coopers and Lybrand that forecast many of the problems confronting all today including gridlock on West Bay Road
In conclusion the NRA need seriously come up with a plan to try and remedy the traffic congestion, much of which has been created by ill informed decisions of the CPA and the LA should read the Coopers and Lybrand report.

Most workers with families come by themselves because they are rejected when bringing others with them because they will not make enough money to support them, only themselves. The schools will be fine.

And what about the power grid with all this rampant development? Is anyone even thinking about that? And where is the sewage from this monstrosity going to go? CUC can’t seem to handle what’s already here without “inexplicable rogue power outages” like this morning’s in Bodden Town. Is anyone on the planning board thinking????.

Exactly. Total absence of Planning. With this ridiculous density of development, the entire western shore of Grand Cayman will gradually sink into the sea and surface somewhere off Honduras. Mr.Ormond had it right, “Caymanians gone mad,”

Blouse n’ Skirt! The traffic along that stretch of West Bay Rd/Church Street is already a nightmare at times.

But I’m sure those 2 little lanes will have no problem handling all of the increased traffic after this monstrosity is built. Ugh.

At least the patrons of this new hotel will be within walking distance of the Blue Marlin.

      • Half the size would have been more appropriate for the site and area. The traffic in the area will be incredible in the high tourist season especially when all the cruise ships are in also not sure how one expands the road in front of the hotel.
This will force more non tourist businesses out of downtown George Town to the Camana Bay Area.
