Bike lanes? We don’t even have pavements!

I expect to hear of more of these types of incidents.

This is no way against this gentleman who was hit but we have a serious issue in Cayman where cyclists think they own the entire road.

Too often, when cyclists are given lanes to ride in, they still choose to ride their bicycles in the lane designated for cars. I never understand this blatant disregard for people who are driving.

Why do we have to be so selfish and not share the road?

I can only assume you’ve had limited experience as a cyclist.

First pretty much all the cycle lanes are harzardous for cyclists whether recreational or more for sport. They’re littered with tyre debris, glass, iguanas, rocks, holes and if adhered to an accident waiting to happen in their own element.

Secondly having worked as a bicycle courier in a major city you’re taught to own the road (respectfully) or be the consequence of the man above. Simply car drivers aren’t programmed to see cyclists or motor bikes, – a known predisposed fact.

We don’t know how this accident occurred, wrong side of the road etc, but cyclists as well as vehicle drivers should have proper consideration for all road users. It’s not just a cyclist/vehicle conflict and would argue the vehicle/vehicle conflict vastly outweighs any inconvenience you’ve experenced with cyclists slowing you down.

…. and there are no issues with the drivers of cars on this island. Plank.

Bicycle lanes are not mandatory to ride in, and are often less safe than the road containing all the debris and not to mention a walkway for pedestrians. I cycle at an average speed of 18 mph and use bicycle lanes whenever it is safe to do so, sadly with them not being maintained and full of gravel and other de-stabilizing material, the road is a better option. The law by the way requires cars to pass bicycles safely and give room, cycle lane or not.

Many of the lanes end abruptly with curbing – particularly at traffic circle entries, where 90% of vehicle traffic cut the corner into the bike lane. Whoever designed our bike lanes should be fired.

I agree with you 100%,they believe that they have more rights on the road than vehicles, and I’m supposed to wait or go around them into the opposite lane when they are bundled up against each other like cattle, instead of riding single filed by law, what they are doing is obstructing traffic,I pay almost a thousand dollars ci a year to drive Cayman roads and every morning on my way to work(especially through South sound)I be fretting that I don’t accidentally hit one of them and end up in jail for it,because that is where you going if you do,I mean isn’t there any where else on this island that they can safely ride without being on the main road, even the joggers, they’re just as bad,im sure there are tracks and fields for these people to exercise on(safely)even running in a circle for a few minutes is covering some miles, these people have no regards for their own lives,to me they are just as bad as those illegal dirt bikers.

absolute twit, -you haven’t really thought this through have you. Right then, no riding bicycles jogging or walking on the roadside unless amenities provided to do so. Besides the basic right to use public roads as much as anyone else, what are we going to do with those that can’t afford a car to get to work, have had their licenses revoked, maybe want to do their part for the environment or simply exercise. Nope you can’t, you must drive to a dedicated area or move house if you’re a non vehicle owner to pursue any of the above. It’s people like you who go to cut me off with a left hand turn that will get the bottom of a shoe in the side of the door.

Maybe you should ride carefully on the road if your exercising and not in the middle of it,or catch a bus if you don’t have a car to go to work with, because if you get mowed down by a drunk driver then chances are you will die and the driver will get 2-3years in prison,or if you gets hit by a person like me that don’t drink alcohol then your death will be ruled as by misadventure, trust me I thinks about it every morning on my way to work,so guess whos the twit now.

Bikes are not supposed to pass on the left, same as cars but they do it all day long and worse near intersections.

It’s this type of attitude that causes someone to be technically right and at the same time part of the pavement.

That’s a shame. Was he riding his bike on the wrong side of the road?- an accident waiting to happen with people disobeying the rules and the police not enforcing against cyclists.

Where does it say he was on the wrong side of the road? It says collided with a cyclist traveling in the opposite direction, not the same thing.

The poster was asking a question not making a statement, dingdong. I asked the same question myself.
        It happens!

      • No state citizen says:

I think Any logical person would have concluded the cyclist was on the wrong side of the road because if the car was driving on the left going toward Pedro Castle and the cyclist collided with the car “going the opposite direction”, what conclusion would you have made? That he was cycling backwards?
So if the cyclist was coming toward the driver on the left hand side, the cyclist would have been on the wrong side of the road!
If you are going to be nasty and arrogant, at least be correct.

Where is the rule that it is okay to hit cyclists, or pedestrians if you feel they are in your way, because I’d like to see that. Motorists must always drive defensively, with room to stop, and they should yield to all dogs, joggers, cyclists, iguanas, chickens, or any obstacle or hazard on the road. If they can’t do that, they should not have the privilege.

I hope he was riding on the correct side of the road, which is WITH the traffic.
So many I have seen riding against traffic and is very dangerous.
I hope he gets back on his bike soon!

On order from overseas and backlogged with all the other things we much need! All jokes aside, as usual they wait until someone is killed or seriously injured before doing anything positive!

      • Anonymous says:

Fake news!!! There have already been MANY killed on our roads already. So this is BS. Are you new here?

    • Al Catraz says:

Things like bicycle paths only serve to attract tourists, who then get hungry and thirsty and end up buying stuff from local businesses away from the main tourist areas. We can’t have that here.
