Lobster season comes to an end

Cayman Islands lobster season, Cayman News Service(CNS): Today is the last day this season that people can take lobster from Cayman Islands waters legally. The season closes tomorrow, when it will no longer be lawful to take, purchase, receive or possess lobster originating from Cayman waters. “The closed season is designed to give the local lobster population a break from harvesting during the times of year when they reproduce the most,” said Department of Environment Senior Research Officer John Bothwell.

“We urge persons not to support poaching. Don’t buy lobsters from people during the closed season. It’s a crime and should be reported to the authorities,” he added.

Full National Conservation Law brochures, including Marine Park maps and all marine rules and regulations about what can and cannot be taken, when can be downloaded from the DoE website

For more information on all of the closed seasons and other conservation rules, contact the DoE on 949-8469 or email DoE@gov.ky.

Anyone who spots poachers is urged to call 911 or contact a DoE enforcement officer directly on the following numbers:

  • Grand Cayman: 916-4271
  • Cayman Brac: 926-0136

Don’t forget the Firefighters also, they’re getting the conchs by the galore.

  2. Said it before and will continue to say it again.Anyone here on a work permit should not be allowed to take anything from Caymans waters. Many of them come from countries where nothing has been left alive. Is that what we want to happen here?As it stands right now ALL 26,000 work permit holders can go and take the same amount of marine life as prescribed in the conservation laws as a Caymanian.

Troll or bigot? So hard to tell sometimes. I’m going bigot, as pretending to be that stupid would take a lot of effort.

The lobster poaching and crime won’t change unless the Leadership of the Islands change . I hope that it happens before it’s too late . I have to think that Leadership is our biggest problem . What is the use of having a boss if he /she is not going to tell you what has to be done .

Enforcement = No boats, No staff and No money to do anything about it. Pathetic.

The Environmental Protection Fund is well capitalized and being drawn down to patch profligate budgetary holes, instead of its intended purpose.

I was told the EPF cannot be used for enforcement purposes, so no boats and no staff from the apparent millions of dollars it holds.
Perhaps someone could confirm if this true and why DOE aren’t getting the equipment and manpower they need to do their jobs.

That will explain why I saw a couple of them on SMB whilst swimming yesterday…haven’t seen one all season, and now they are coming back to SMB for their break…

This Caymanian would honestly be fine without a conch or lobster season. These open seasons just legitimize the year-long frozen poach supply from those mentally unencumbered by the arbitrary limitations of catch, zonings, or seasons. I only say arbitrary because we hear of so few busts despite new laws and budgets (nice new trucks though).

Trucks ain’t good parked in ALT’s parking lot picking kids up from school or sitting out back of Fidel Murphy’s to name a few activity not enforcement. No accountability for poachers or officers, how can we protect our future if the protectors won’t protect. Mr Bothwell talk to dem folks who take your money but don’t put in the hours. There are some good Officer but some not doing there jobs and we pay dem.
