Cayman Islands London Representative Eric Bush and Premier Alden McLaughlin

(CNS): Eric Bush, the Cayman government’s representative in London, has taken over the chairmanship of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA), as Cayman assumes its turn at the helm of the body which promotes the interests of Britain’s remaining territories. Taking up the chairmanship of the group means that the Cayman Islands will head the political council which sets the association’s policies and approves all decisions, activities and agendas.

The Cayman Islands Government London Office will also undertake the duties of the secretariat. Along with the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands will also co-chair the UKOTA Financial Services Sub-Committee that deals exclusively with financial services.

As chair of UKOTA, the Cayman Islands will be hosting the annual Pre-Joint Ministerial Council, where the members gather in the host territory to plan for the end-of-year Joint Ministerial Council with the British government in London towards the end of the year.

Two main objectives this year will be to write a new white paper that seeks to enhance the relationship between the UK and its overseas territories and to reform the Constitution of UKOTA, bringing it in line with current legislation and best practice, officials stated in a release.

“We are pleased to assume the chairmanship of UKOTA and we look forward to setting an industrious agenda that produces and very fruitful and productive year for all of its members,” said Bush.

Is there a way that this can help feather the nests of Cayman’s capital owning families, assist lodge members or give a job to someone who hits women? Otherwise I cannot see the point of this.

[He] got another promotion? No way he gets such positions in the private sector. It’s not what you know but who you know in Cayman and the Civil Service. Look at his track record as Chief Officer it’s a disaster wherever he has been but he has favored status by the king makers and DG.

What CCTV debacle ? Can you imagine what crime might be in Cayman without it. Now criminals have to steal cars wear masks and hide to escape the CCTV. These are all hurdles that the criminals didn’t have to overcome before.

We need to install more cameras ….

Why is the financial Industry sitting on their hands and relying on just these two to get the message across? How close to annihilation do we leave it before hiring professional PR and lobbyists? So much money being made, yet we’re so cheap on easy things we could do to positively influence a flexible outcome.

8.48 please try to stay in touch with the news. Jude Scott and Cayman Finance are doing a brilliant job of promoting Cayman’s interests, as is IMAC and other bodies. Jude is a very intelligent man who just gets it and has the ears of the right people, and understands the needs of the finance industry.

Cayman Finance does not have contact or working relationships with all of the 793 seats in the House of Lords. We need to hire a professional PR army to advocate and dispell myths not rely on a vapid assumption that some single character or trio will magically save the day. It should be a professionally-managed collaborative effort.

You can hire a thousand PR folk but it will not change the view of Cayman as the John Grisham/the Firm shady place which we did nothing to counter when the movie was being filmed here back in the early nineties. If you say Cayman Islands to the average person in the U.K. they have either never heard of it or they know it as a money laundering place. Nothing in between.

What John Grisham wrote about was the truth. Yes there is a fictional element to fill in the gaps, but to sit there and pretend that none of it happened is asinine.

The UK knows the truth that Cayman is a parasite used to help the selfish wealthy avoid paying taxes to help education, healthcare and public services.

Only someone writing at 3.43 am who doesn’t understand would write such BS. We all pay taxes here, make no mistake, how do you think the government pays for its near $1bn budget? Also, if we live here and earn it here (as most of us do), and Govt raises enough tax, what the hell has it got to do with you?

              • Anonymous says:

3.43 am might be living in the far east! We have a number of Caymanians and former residents working in the financial services in Asia.

3:43am, you dropped the word “small or tiny”. Nice touch ole fella!

What are these best practices they have to get the “constitution” in line with? Assuming such things exist, why didn’t they do it last year or the year before that? It sounds like the kind of bs you emit when you have no clue and need to justify all the travel vouchers. Get together on specific topics like taxes on air service from the UK or the beneficial owner registry, and give us an agenda in advance.
