Thieves pose as workmen to enter homes

| 09/01/2018 | 27 Comments

(CNS): The RCIPS is issuing a warning to residents to be on alert for would-be thieves posing as workers from utility companies or maintenance-related businesses who are trying to con their way into people’s homes. Having received a number of reports in recent days of this suspicious activity, the police are urging people to exercise caution with anyone requesting access to their home because they could be connected to crime and in particular burglaries.

CUC has confirmed to police that as a general policy their employees do not enter residences except in unusual circumstances. But all CUC staff members have official CUC identification, either displayed on their person or readily available, and people should ask for ID from anyone claiming to be from CUC or any other utility or service company.

The police are asking members of the public who are approached by anyone that they suspect is attempting to enter their home under false pretenses to call 911 and make a report as soon as possible. People are asked to note any identifying information, descriptions of those involved or any vehicle they have driven, including registration numbers.

Anyone who notices suspicious activity is asked to call their local police station. Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

Just use a little common sense if someone shows up to work. Where, in Cayman, does anyone show up to do work?

Anyone who asks to enter, simply take a real nice clear picture of them, if they don’t much fancy that, tell them nah.

Why would ANYONE allow an unexpected worker into their home????
Sorry but you folk need to be more sceptical of your surroundings and pay attention. The only worker allowed in my home is one I have called and they are not left unattended for any reason. That’s just weird.
Do you people also still leave your doors unlocked???

I remember a few weeks ago there was a Whatsapp message being circulated about this. The news or whoever quickly threw out a statement to say it was not true. I’m so sick of it. The constant tug a war with what’s true and what’s not. Where are these people proposing to be from? What company? We need to know!

Who are all these people walking/driving up and down all day or sitting under trees in various yards all over this island. Surely they are not productive nor legal. Who checking on them ??? What a joke. Illegal criminals!!!!!!

Since when was sitting in the shade of a tree or driving up and down been a crime? Some are retired, others self or unemployed. Some might not want or need to work (it’s not against the law). Some may be as you infer but it seems from your comment you consider them all criminals regardless.

I kind of get the feeling that your idea of island life is with AC, hot water, cable TV and a well paid job. Take a good look around you. Many don’t have all or any of these luxuries. Please be more considerate with your comments.

If they are illegal criminals, does that make them law abiding citizens?

Would be helpful if the police would tell the public what utility companies or maintenance companies these crooks are posing as? Like, hey people- beware of thieves knocking on your door in LOGIC uniforms, etc! Or… is that too much info for the public to have on hand? SMH

Um. If ANYONE from ANYWHERE, uniform and ID or not turn up UNEXPECTED at my door, they will be photographed turned away.

just gonna open your door, snap a pic of them and expect they won’t bop you on the head and enter your home? LOL
Not everyone’s front door has a window you know.

Forged ID is easy to make. Everything can be easily forged these days.

The last suggestion, take the car’s number, might be a little tricky, since many cars have only one plate, and some have none at all. I’ve never understood why the Police tolerate those who remove registration plates for no good reason.
It’s like holding a middle finger the law, but no one seems to care. Last time I checked, it was punishable by 6 months in jail or a $2,500 fine. Bizarre!

You are absolutely correct. RCIP has too many officers who really don’t care about making Cayman a safer place, actually, I doubt all officers know the laws they should actually be enforcing.

They don’t. I mean let’s face it, they only get a few weeks training in the states. Nothing like the UK training regime yet they have the cheek to call it British policing.

Lets not forget to add that they are armed and when calling 911 dont think that they are sending a cop unit right away j had to wait an hour and a half on this little island for police to arrive

Just brilliant service I’m appalled ?
